Excellent... you can show us how it's done!

Re: Legs 1 & 2 recce Fri 27th
Ha ha! I'm well out of practice on the big hills as I discovered at the Tour De Helvellyn. Don't expect me to navigate, it was pitch black last time I was up there! Hope I can make it as I'm getting quite giddy about being in the Lakes again.

Hi Clive
I live at Stainland, not a million miles away from HB - can we car share? I don't mind driving. Not 100% sure whether I can make it or not yet but trying to make it happen.

Andy/All
I would love to come - even if just for one leg - but I'm taking an enforced to rest period at the moment due to a bout of tendonitis and I need it to clear before it messes my year up, therefore I'll have to pass :-(
Hope you have a terrific day and I'll see you out there before too long.

Re: Legs 1 & 2 recce Fri 27th
Sorry to hear you can't make it Martyn. Hope the injury clears up soon.
So, I think this is the line-up for Friday so far: Andy, Clewy, Mole, Mrs S, Clive and me. If we can all make it and my maths is right, we're going to need four cars, unless someone's got a big one. We all meet at Dunmail, then there's six of us to be got to Keswick, which will need two cars. We'll also need two cars left at Dunmail to get the drivers of the cars in Keswick back to Keswick with out leaving at least one person shivering in the dark at Dunmail. I think!
Edit: one possibility would be one or two of us getting the bus from Dunmail to Keswick at 0855, gets in to Keswick at 0910. Wouldn't delay us too much. I'd be happy to take the bus. This way only one car would need go to Keswick, meaning three cars between us all would be fine.
I need to drop my girlfriend off at Oxenholme station at 0720, so should be at Dunmail just after 0800 all being well. Is this ok with everyone else?
Been out around Langdale and over to Pike o' Blisco this morning... a good amount of snow on the ground above 700m. And very cold in the wind! Also got seriously icy feet going across Martcrag Moor. So wrap up warm folks! Forecast looking good at the moment: dry, bright and cold.

Hey Hank, good organisational skills there.
I don't mind catching the bus also, as bus is 0855 maybe we could aim to be at Dunmail for 0800-0830?
Looking forward to this first 2012 BG reccie.

Sounds good! All aim to be at Dunmail by 0830 and we'll work it out from there.
It's been a clear afternoon in Kendal and I reckon out in the hills it'd be after 1700 before you'd need a headtorch, so all being well it'll only be the last hill or two where we'll need them (presuming something like 8h30m for the lot, which would be pretty good going with snow on the ground - I wouldn't be surprised if we're out longer though).

Re: Legs 1 & 2 recce Fri 27th
Hi all,
Looking forward to this, what kind of time are we looking at for both legs?
Just thinking about how much food and water to carry.

See above. We posted at pretty much the same time! 8h30m would be a very steady BG pace, so that seems reasonable, but snow/ice can really slow things up.

Re: Legs 1 & 2 recce Fri 27th
Evening all.
I'm still waiting to hear from Keswicksimon. He seemed interested but is currently abroad (I think). I'm sure he'll drop into this thread when he lands back. If he brings his car we may be able to leave a car at Threlkeld should anyone want to leave some food / drink etc and it may make things easier at Dunmail. We can always stash some food & drink in a binliner and leave it near the cricket club to save a bit of weight?
Is it true that if you're driving you get a piggy-back up Fairfield?

Cheers Hank,
Will crampons/axe be needed? How much snow/ice is left up there?

I'd bring along Microspikes or some kind of running crampon if you've got them, though I'm sure you'll be fine without as we'll go steady and stick together. Also, it could well be that what snow there is (and it's not loads) thaws and goes before Friday. The forecast is currently for a rise in temperature Tuesday and Wednesday, cooling down again significantly on Thursday with some snow showers and staying cold on Friday... freezing level around 500m, so that's 6+ hours in sub-zero temperatures and a big wind chill. I'd ditch the axe, but bring the thermals!

Latest: 23/01/2012 16:57 FELLTOP CONDITIONS REPORT from Helvellyn at 1230pm on Monday 23rd January 2012. Fresh snow is lying on the fells above 600m. The depth increases with altitude to around 20cm of fresh snow in drifts and hollows, with the largest buildups on northeast through to southeast facing slopes and gullies. Above 750m, standing water and old snow has refrozen, creating very slippery conditions especially where the ice is hidden under loose fresh snow. The final exit ramps from Striding Edge and Swirral Edge have steep unavoidable sections of snow and ice and an ice axe and crampons are essential for safe negotiation of these sections. The top of the exit from Striding Edge is guarded by an almost vertical section of snow and ice topped by a small cornice and this should only be tackled by the experienced. Small cornices remain above some eastern facing slopes and gullies, so please keep back from the edge. Full winter clothing and footwear are required for anyone venturing out on the high fells. PLEASE NOTE: To avoid damage to fragile and nationally important habitats, winter climbers are advised to wait until routes are in full winter condition before attempting them. Please avoid the temptation to climb on routes whilst there is chance of damaging the vegetation cover, as the turf under the snowpack is unfrozen. Summit readings from Helvellyn today at 1230pm. Temperature: minus 1.7 C. Wind chill: minus 9.5 C. Max wind speed: 23.1 mph. Average wind speed: 20.3 mph

OK cheers Linda.
There's quite a few Tod Harriers going up Friday, sadly I can't persuade them for a nice day out!
