Re: Cader Idris race kit warni
They're usually quite keen on race kit checks at this race every year, they pulled a couple of runners out of the race last year or was it the year before for not having the correct kit. I think if they state that you should carry the correct kit then it's important to check that everyone does for the sake of fairness. I'd hate to think that I've carried the full kit whilst others have not!
Well done Gafr for giving runners the heads up though.

Runners shouldn't need the heads up, rules are quite clear and there for a reason. Sale couldn't manage to carry the correct kit on the Calderdale last weekend and paid the price. I'm sure their leg 5 runners are very popular with the other 10 just now.

Re: Cader Idris race kit warni
No probs giving the heads up.
Dont want to make it sound serious, it's just a clampdown by the Wfra i think. Since Cader is a counter in the N.wales series, I think a lot of runners that do their (wfra) races might turn up without kit, saying that it's the wfra that govern any fell race in wales anyway.
Saying all this though if the weather is a scorcher and no forecast of rain/wind, they MIGHT relax the rules at their discression.
What i was told, if anyone turns up with some tiny Triathlon belt type of thing that only hold a few gels, you will get pulled then get sent back the way you came!!!! ;-)
At the 3 peaks this year there was a lady on the tanoy talking for about an hour before race start about various things and every 5 minutes she was stressing the importance of carrying your full kit, after hearing it 20 times in an hour i suppose there was no excuse :-)
Please turn up with your full kit and a call will be made soon enough before race start about what should be carried, weather pending.

TBF it can seem a tad confusing in Wales.. Snowdon 10 miles, 3000ft ascent.. no kit needed.. Cader 11 miles, 3000ft ascent.. kit needed.. due to who insures the race etc.. so I can understand some confusion.. as always just take various kit along and see what they want.. Anyway think its fair enough for Gafr to pass on the message..
I'm now considering a return to fell running.. after my retirement due to injury, I've since ran Moel Eilio and my foot seemed OK.. I'm now just shit at descending due to not being in the hills for 6 months rather than a foot injury.. anyway may do Cader.. will see.. It's all a bit Scholsey..

You should have been at Fairfield last weekend, kit check was pretty interesting!
It's amazing the folk who think they shouldn't have to comply with the rules!

It's a year for comeback's Iain...Alun last week on Eilio...you @ Cader :-)
as for the thread..I've been carrying a full backpack for my training around the lakes...not for the fun of carrying weight - but to make sure I get home safe in the event of something going wrong...things can go wrong in a race...last weekend was doing a reccie of OCT and my running partner had a fall - nothing serious - but it did slow his down to a hobble..so he put extra layers on and made his way to a meeting point.
Do footballer's turn up to a football game without kit? NO! So why should we? (not footie kits of course)

I read on the Fairfield Thread that a runner had a go at you during the kit check. Pretty incredible considering what's on the front page of the FRA website.
Maybe we should start a Today's W*nker thread and start with that fool's name.

Re: Cader Idris race kit warni
I don't know why people grumble about having to carry what they perceive as being excess kit, its not like the majprity of us are olympic athletes where carrying an additional 200 grams (or otherwise) of kit will make a significant differnece to our performance.
Its for your own saftey after all.

It is worse than that, on "The Trigger" in January a few blokes refused to open up their jackets so that the mountain rescue guys on the checkpoints could physically see their race numbers. It might cost them a few seconds, I suppose.

As a committee member, I'm not aware of any 'clampdown' but I'm sure we will be emphasising to RO's the need to stress WFRA (which are the FRA) regs on safety, especially after Buttermere sailbeck. And sensible RO's will need no reminding!
I despair, I really do, that this is still a live issue.

It'll probably be a live issue for as long as there are [insert insulting term of your choice] on the earth!
So quite a while:)

this is one of my pet hates
if the weather is bad enough for you to not want to unzip/lift up your jacket then ALL THE MORE REASON why the marshals need to physically see your number.
I would never consider just shouting out my number to a marshal - you could misremember your own number, or the marshal could mishear - I ALWAYS show my number fully and wait to hear a marshal say my number back (correctly!) out loud.
it's not just polite/etiquette/good practice, it's for your OWN SAFETY FFS

The WFRA may hold different laws to the FRA.. not sure who insured Eilio...

Re: Cader Idris race kit warni
Looking at the forecast I think that factor 30 suncream might be in order for Saturday  could be a hot one

Re: Cader Idris race kit warni
Is entry on the day usually OK? I have always entered in advance but wasn't sure I'd be able to do it this year but happily I can.
-
Re: Cader Idris race kit warni
I have never done other than enter on the day and it's not been a problem - have a feeling its a championship race this year, though, so that may make a difference.

If it is its only a welsh champs so they don't get that busy.. its a popular race with or without champ status but we're all entering on the day..
Huge race this year, massive pressure on the front runners for fest Goch. I've decided just to watch as I think it'll be so entertaining. I'm taking a 12 pack of purple moose up the zig zags and watching from there..
-
Re: Cader Idris race kit warni
So it is looking good for entry on the day then.... no excuses for eating ice cream on the beach at Barmouth instead!

Re: Cader Idris race kit warni
Yes entry on the day is fine, no problemo
Looking at the forecast it is going to be a hot one
Hot in Dolgell today anyway and a awsome view of the mountain from the yard at work
The race is a counter in the Wfra N.wales champs.
Ran the course last night and it is bone dry, even the path along the lakeside and wet field before you get to Ty Nant car park is drying out.
The mountain it's self is totally dry so should make for lightning speed coming down and shoe choice wise one could get away with road shoes if it's your prefrence. Promising no rain between now and race day so will dry out more.
Kit wise.........bring everything with you and the organisers MIGHT make a different call on some?????

Re: Cader Idris race kit warni

Re: Cader Idris race kit warni
Should be a bit like the Marathon des Sables! You'll recognise me by my very appropriate headgear!

Re: Cader Idris race kit warni
Well done to everyone who ran; it was bloody hot! I managed 2:08 which was 8 minutes over my recce time but then I did fall over 3 times on the way down during the actual race. Thanks to the kind people who stopped to ask if I was ok; after the third fall I seriously though about staying on the floor but the thought of a cold beer at the finish got me back on my feet.
Cracking race, despite the bruises I really enjoyed it.

Re: Cader Idris race kit warni
that was my first fell race and Oh My God, valuable lessons learnt, 1.being a decent road runner counts for nothing on the fell.2. don`t eat cake and coffee an hour before the race and lesson
3. don`t follow fell runners down a mountain because they run off cliffs!
I started off ok, nice and easy 7:27 first mile. Through the woods was tricky with roots under foot and i was dying for a pee.I stopped for a pee and lost 12 places, second mile 8:09. I couldnt seem to get going again and was now having to queue at styles, mile 3, 8:10 at the foot of the mountain there was a sign 4km to the top and the only way is up up up,I was now starting to feel sick (see lesson no 2 cake) onwards and upwards and a major whitey reduced me to a hands on knees march the trail got higher and steeper with no respite mile 4, 21:27 yes for 1 mile,i had ran the Walton park 5 mile 3 days earlier in 28 mins, now i resembled a pastey faced zombie with his hands stuck to his knees, to scared to look up I soldiered on until near the summit where it was so steep it was almost vertical. I was so happy to be on the descent, I spotted an older man in a pink shirt who was running off the trail, he seemed to really know the mountain well so i thought heres my ticket to the bottom ( see lesson 3) the man ran off the side of the mountain and soft lad here followed him. I have never been so scared, it was ridiculously steep i could put my hand behind me and touch the floor and we were travelling at a pace, finally i reached the bottom my quads were battered, then i took a tumble, i lay there for what seemed about a minute before daring to move, happy i was still in one piece i got up and continued. It was baking hot and i was feeling really ill now, finding it difficult to find any rythm or even any resemblance of jogging i power walked and ran when i could, back through the woods and finally onto tarmac,a look at my watch told me i had been racing for 1hr 52 mins with a mile to go.With that lovely black smooth surface that i am so used to beneath my feet i was determined to break 2 hours and so once more into the breach i put my head down and started my last mile effort I crossed the finish line in 1:58:05 last mile split 5:59.
Definitely got unfinished business with Cader idris, see you next year.

Brilliant this made me laugh!!
Was my 3rd year running(ish) Cader and wow with the heat it was even tougher than the previous years.
Finished in 2h 41m which was 11 mins slower than last year but with the temperatures and my lack of training it was hardly suprising but at least I managed to avoid a personal worst by 4 minutes!
Brilliant race with a fantastic atmosphere - every fell race should have a samba band.

Great story and a reminder of my first forays many years back. Soon you will get the ultimate pleasure of fell running. You will realise that mile splits are utterly irrelevant so you can free yourself from their tyranny and just enjoy racing!
-
Re: Cader Idris race kit warni
Good race. I didn't think it was that hot, warm but nothing overly unpleasant in the end as you had a cooling wind for a good chunk and then water at Ty Nant.
I climbed well, but foot went on the descent so its back off the fells for a while.
There was definitely more crossing of your path by runners coming up.. maybe its people new to fell racing don't really know the etiquette but slower runners going up keep clear of the descenders.. I kept to one side for Andreas, Felipe and Math.. point which side you are going, or at least be obvious and don't step across.. A few times I had people try to step across my path at the last minute.. just pick a side, make it obvious and stay on that side.. it seemed worse this year.
Sorry for the gripe but someone will get taken out yet by someone going at pace..

Re: Cader Idris race kit warni
Thanks for all your feedback, I felt pretty much ok yesterday but today I have the worlds worse ever case of DOMS, im never this sore after marathons never mind 10.5 miles but the Cader race was an amazing experience and it has on whet my appetite for more and believe me, i`m gonna get good at this mountain lark if it kills me. Next month its Trail Marathon Wales for me then i`m off to Spain for a while where i`ll meet up with my friend Jose the skyrunner and we are gonna run to the top of Puig Campana all 1420 metres.
