There is another thread on Moire O'Sullivan "Mud, Sweat and Tears" book about this topic
My brother has it so I will be swiping it off him in the summer looking forward to reading it.

I do fancy a go at this - are many people attempting it this year?
Interesting contrast to the BG in the rules:
- Competitors may run solo or in groups on the strict understanding that all members carry their own gear and that the navigation is done by a member doing the attempt in total.
- It is against the spirit of the event to have a pacing runner or navigational support.
[QUOTE=parkovski;486454]Interesting contrast to the BG in the rules:
... yeah, but only if you want to be on the official list.
On paper it would appear to be a lot easier that the BG (less summits and smaller summits) But I believe the going is a lot harder. With such a small population and hill walking is a much younger activity in Ireland when compared to the UK so you do not have the same number of paths/trods. I read in a guy's writeup that a Winter round can actually have the advantage of the undergrowth is not as strong so it can make the going a lot easier. I believe the number of completions is only in the thirties since the shortened it to make it doable in 24 hrs.
Apparently there is a group of four heading off at 2am this morning (Saturday morning).
Comments by Paul Tierney who done a sub 18 hr BG two weeks ago and Moire O'Sullivan ( this first person to complete the Wicklow Round)

There are another 3 additions to the club. One of them, had been struggling all week with the flu had to pull out early in the round but the other three went on for a sub 21 hr completion.

For anybody that is interested here is there report on their successful attempt. It is a very different beast to the BG!

What are the tops for this? I assume they're on the site you've linked, but at present i can't get on!

I just searched for Wicklow Round Summits on google. Moire wrote a very good book about it.
Cheers! I'll try that. Otherwise I'll just have to wait until I'm at home. I have restricted access at the moment.
The imra site seems to be down at the moment. I have seen loads of info about it there.
I see it is back up now, there must have been some maintenance going on.

Cheers Pat! Its an interesting one that. My wife and myself went over there a couple of years back and did all the 3000' peaks/tops and loved it. I do like the fact you're expected to nav and carry your own kit.
The word document containing the contenders write ups is very intersting. It sounds like that under foot conditions undergrowth/water logging are key considerations, much more so than a BG.
I had a great run up carrantuohill in kerry last summer, amazing morning. I would have though a 24 hr round based down there would be an amazing (and very challanging) endevor.
Plan to head out on the Eastern Reeks training this weekend.
Plenty of mountains around here, completed a 6 day hike across the Mangertons and Dunkerrons taking in 52 summits a month or two ago and know a fellow who plans to run the length of the Dunkerrons.
The only problem is that the ranges tend to stretch out down the peninsulas of Dingle, Iveragh and Beara and don't lend themselves to circuits. The only possible long circuit would have to be based around the cluster that is the Reeks, Purple Mountains and the NE end of the Dunkerrons. Could possibly think of one that would involve parking at the Black Valley, heading west along the Kerry Way, ascending Caher and on to Carrauntohhil and then across the Eastern Reeks, Maolan Bui, Knocknapeasta and the Big Gun and down to Kate Kearneys - there is a path off Strickeen. Then up over Tomies and the Purple Mountain on the other side of the Gap of Dunloe and back to the car. Might not be the longest but would involve 6 or 7 of the highest 10 in the country, 2 of the most spectacular ridges in Caher and the Big Gun, and a fair bit of ascent, as well as some of the most stunning scenery across the Reeks, Gap of Dunloe and National Park.
Great name "The Big Gun" do you know where it came from? I seem to remember that being a dodgy erete. Then again it was awful conditions when I was up there.
