Attempts Weekend 22-24 June
Just wanted to wish everyone having a go this weekend the very best of luck - I think I know of at least 5 attempts, well, 4 now that Lee has postponed. Imagine there must be a good few more:
Dave Barnes (Dallam) - originally going tonight, postponed until Saturday 6.00pm start
Tom Hollins (dunno) - 0300 start Saturday
Clewy (Pennine isn't it?) - 1900 start tonight
Mark Estienne (York Acorn Runners) - think it's a 7.00pm start on Saturday
Will be up in Keswick area tomorrow to give a bit of support to these brave souls.

Re: Attempts Weekend 22-24 Jun
Good luck to all of them. Isn't the Dark Peak machine rolling this weekend too? They're going to need all the help they can get this weekend! I think Lee's made a good decision: quite apart from the conditions on the round, his support was going to be tent-based, which wouldn't have been much fun in this weather. And it means I don't have to go up Great End in appalling weather yet again:)

I just heard that Dark Peak have pulled their collective attempt this weekend.

Re: Attempts Weekend 22-24 Jun
Clewy's canned his attempt tonight. Good call. It's chucking it down here and with wind forecast up to 80mph tonight it'd be hell out there. Forecast looks better for tomorrow, so reckon those guys will be in with a shout. Good luck!

Spoken to Clewy this morning and he is gutted about the weather but as made the right decision, can't say i was looking forward to navigating leg 2 for him in this weather.

Re: Attempts Weekend 22-24 Jun
DP have cancelled but two of the attemptees are getting support for a Sat PM start.
-
Re: Attempts Weekend 22-24 Jun
I've got twenty attempts listed for this weekend. I suspect many will be postponing if the weather stays like this. If any contenders are reading this - there's no need to re-register if you do reschedule your attempt.

I was due to support on legs 1 and 2 tonight but its off so I am going to have to console myself with a pint or 2 in the Hawkshead Brewery instead - Poor me!

Re: Attempts Weekend 22-24 Jun
After last weekend's experience (with the exception of Ash's epic success:w00t:) "discretion is the better part of valour". Good luck to the re-schedulers.
I hope this weather improves... it's all getting a bit silly!
Wish I'd gone in bloody March now! The day of the 4 Inns (31st) was a bit overcast but at least you could stand up and actually see something!
-
Re: Attempts Weekend 22-24 Jun
I also did the 4 Inns in March and said the same thing to my team mates. It'd been so dry up to that point the peat bogs over Black Hill and Bleaklow were like sprung mattresses to run on. Can't believe how rubbish it's been since the end of May. Doesn't look like it will end any time soon either ..

I went on 31st March - "smug"!

Re: Attempts Weekend 22-24 Jun
Good luck to those to who do attempt tonight or over the weekend.
It was grim last weekend but we didn't have the strong winds.

I wish you'd told me what the weather was going to do!
In fact just saying, "Don't touch that kebab" at the beginning of May would've done.:o:rolleyes:

Re: Attempts Weekend 22-24 Jun
Evening all.
Seems odd sitting here when I reckon I should be somewhere on Spoonygreen Lane. I was itching to go and felt pretty good until I read the Met Office forecast last night - it seemed significantly worse than the forecast on MWIS. It was only after much deliberation that I decided it was best not to go.
I've definitely learned a few things regards organising an attempt. There is a lot to be said for having an element of flexibility with supporters and start times / days - I know others have benefitted from this already this year.
While I'm gutted I didn't go I know it's not the end of the world. Lots of people have been very kind in offering help and assistance for future attempts and it is very much appreciated.
Good luck to those who go tomorrow.
Clewy

Best of luck to all attemptees this weekend, any successes will be treated with the shock and awe they rightly deserve!
-
Re: Attempts Weekend 22-24 Jun
Heard that Tom Hollins has also cancelled, potentially looking at a 7.00pm start tomorrow. He's up in Keswick now and reports dreadful weather, lots of water coming down off the fells and the rivers really swollen.
-
Re: Attempts Weekend 22-24 Jun
I know that people are gutted after all the preparation and organisation but we really do need a sense check on these attempts. It's not only the contenders but the supporters who are subject to awful conditions.
Chill guys, have a pint and come back again when the weather is better.

Reports from Wasdale Head Inn on Twitter say flooding around there cars being dumped

Re: Attempts Weekend 22-24 Jun
Just to let everyone Know my Charity attempt this weekend for Prostate Cancer has been resceduled for 20th July due to severe weather warnings ie flooding and 70mph winds. I want this attempt to be remembered for all the right reasons. We can't afford any more casualties up there thanks for all your support. Mark Estienne

That's my chosen weekend and start time too although I'm off work all week and may go earlier if the weather forecast looks poor on the weekend. It's blustery but dry here in East Yorkshire at the moment, the sky has been light enough to see by for a good 40 mins. 7pm starts would have been coming into Dunmail about then. The rainfall radar looks horrible over the lakes though.

Re: Attempts Weekend 22-24 Jun
I ran up Loughrigg yesterday evening and it was awful... the wind was very strong at 300m and torrential rain.
Still bad up here, but the wind has dropped a bit and the heavy rain is a little more patchy, in Kendal anyway.
Good luck to anyone setting off later!
-
Re: Attempts Weekend 22-24 Jun
.......and I thought 20th July would be quiet. Between Campylobacter and the weather, it's looking like it'll be quite busy... best sort some accomodation.

Re: Attempts Weekend 22-24 Jun
Sitting in my house in Keswick and just learned that the attempt that i was helping on leg2 has been cancelled. Looking out of the window I would say that that is a very good call although disappointing for the contender. Remember there are plenty of weekends left in the year -better to abort now rather than waste a vast amount of energy on an unsuccessful attempt. I can't imagine crossing the Caldew in this (and I crossed the Upper Esk last weekend).
-
Re: Attempts Weekend 22-24 Jun
Can't imagine what the Caldew must be like, river I passed last night is just about bursting it's banks and it's a low level river. The sound of running water was deafening!

We went from Conston to Wasdale and back on Friday on a Lakeland 100 reccy.
Getting back was decidedly touch and go. All those streams we had stepped over on the way out were raging torrents on the way back. We both found ourselves up to the chest in water on a couple of occasions. Considering what the Duddon looked like at 4pm, I reckon the Caldew would have been uncrossable. We could barely stand against the wind on the top of Walna Scar.

I know. I'm feeling a bit guilty now at having got away with mine on the Spring Bank weekend. Just taken the dog for a walk along the river & canal to the pub. The beer tasted that much better knowing that this was Plan B: Plan A had me on Great End & Scafell Pike navigating for Lee.

Yea I am pleased I managed to get round last weekend with fab support!

Re: Attempts Weekend 22-24 Jun
Well, if the Greta is anything to go by the Caldew will be horrific ......

Re: Attempts Weekend 22-24 Jun
We had a go at leg 2 and had to wade 50m past the sewege farm through over knee deep water (I hope) and when we got high the wind started and then rain came down like bullets. We got to white side and it was getting daft and one our merry men was getting cold so we turned round and reversed the route. Saw a lad on tour of helvelyn and he was bailing off round raise and a bloke training for utmb . All the grass around the river and bridge was flatend and feilds were lakes so looks like the river burst last nite . Bet caldew wouldve iffy !
