Re: cut on heel / achilles
A dirty great wad of that old-school Elastoplast brown-coloured fabric plaster swathed all over the injured area? Good luck mate!

Re: cut on heel / achilles
Does it have to be 'dirty' DT? That's what I've got on currently but (call me a wimp) hurts like hell when I put on any type of footwear and try to move.

Dirty great as in very large, not mucky
Re: cut on heel / achilles
The price of going past me on that second lap...
Long shot, but superglue? What's the stuff they use in A&E for gluing cuts?
Re: cut on heel / achilles
Nigel, cut a 'V' off the back of an old pair of trainers so that the wound is left alone to repair itself. This is what I did when I once had such in injury on both heels, following a very wet KIMM in the Howgills. Anything else was too painful. Not sure it will be ok to do 17 miles on Sunday though! ydt

It was almost worth it, Stuart.

I think the Sandstone might be muddy on Sunday so want Mudclaws, but I might have an old pair I'd be prepared to do that to.

It's pretty muddy out there at the moment, & there are some fields where fell shoes will win out over anything else. Most of the route will be OK in trail shoes though, due to its sandy/stony surfacing. I'll certainly be wearing Mudclaws myself.
Re: cut on heel / achilles
I'd go back to the compede - that white lump is perfectly normal.
Its just the gel absorbing fluid that has leaked from the wound.
(unless it gets red and throbbing - in which case you have an infection problem)
gel dressings are actually more effective than dry dressings because they keep the wound moist (which if kept clean gives a better environment for repair)
(the missus is a nurse and quite up on these things).
You can get bigger gel (hydro-colloid) dressings than the normal compede size - try a pharmacy or your doctor's district / practise nurse. They also come in varying thickness.
The longer you can keep the same dressing on the better so make sure you start with a clean wound.
If I'm off on a long and muddy run then I'll overlay the gel dressing with plenty of tape to make sure it stays in place.
Re: cut on heel / achilles
Thanks for this. I have just sliced the top off the back off an old pair of Mudclaw 330's and they now rest below the area that is sore. Feels good runninng up and down the lounge but I guess I'll test it better outside later tonight. I still need to dress the cut itself, though, so will revert to Compede (bought some Compede extreme today which appears thicker and more padded - not seen it before) but will overlay that with tape to keep in place. Wish I'd known the white lump was normal before I removed it but hey ho. See you on the start line, Splatcher.

Hope it works, Nigel. Andy k's advice about hydro-colloid dressings sounds sensible to me.
Compeed extreme - I've never heard of it either but I like the sound of it.
I'll see you on the start line - I'll be in my mudclaws as well....
Re: cut on heel / achilles
Which race are you doing Nigel? Good luck anyway and hope your heel is ok.

It's the Sandstone Trail A & B Races (17 & 11 miles) in Cheshire.
Re: cut on heel / achilles
Well, happy to report I ran 6 miles last night with very little discomfort so Sandstone is on. I'll be the one in Mudclaws with a chunk hacked off the back! I'm doing the Sandstone 'A' race, Linda.

Sounds like you've got it sorted Nigel, well done! I looked at this race but it said it was in the Midlands so I disregarded it, anyway I'm doing Hope Moors & Tors now so lets hope we get a dry couple of hours.

No, just round the corner from nme in 'sunny' Cheshire. Have a good one, yourself, and hopefully we won't get too wet. As long as it's dry when I start I don't mind.
