BG Attempt 17/18th May 2013

All right then as people are throwing their hat into the ring so to speak on a Bob Graham for a 2013 attempt i might as well throw mine in too.
Having thought about attempting the BG challenge since 2007 i think its about time i give it a go. Over the last few years i have been getting myself familiar with what is involved in under taking the challenge, plenty of recces helping out on a few attempts and getting some sound advice from people that have already completed the BG in the past one such person was the late Bill Smith.
So i plan to go on the Friday 17th May starting at 7pm on a clockwise round & at the moment i have got half a team together with logistics also sorted. So if anyone wants to join in the fun on some recces or be part of the pacing & naving on the attempt just get in touch dont be shy.:thumbup:

I'm up for recces and helping out on your attempt. Should be able to book it in now and keep it free. I'm also hoping to have a go next year too - not committed to a date yet though.

I'm thinking of going this weekend too
or possibly 24th/25th
I went first weekend in June last year and only just got down off Blencathra before it went dark, off a 6:45pm start
so I was thinking of starting at 6:30pm
'course I'll be on a 23:59 schedule, so if you're going for sub-20 you'll be fine ;)

Hi Daz
I had thought about the 24th/25th as well but decided against it as it is the bank holiday weekend, and as we know it can be quite busy in the lakes at that time. Another reason for attempting the BG in May is that if the weather is against you (as we know it can be:thunbdown:) and you have to re-schedule your attempt, it gives you plenty of time to arrange another date.
If you are wanting to do some recces let me know.:)

i'll be up for some recces/training and helping out on your attempt!! Always free at weekends. And live in threlkeld too, brews at mine.

Cheers Lee that would be great, i will give you a shout when im doing a recce next. Good to have another brew stop in Threlkeld as well, i was at Kenny Stuarts house having a brew a few weeks back.:thumbup:

For anybody that is interested i have just updated my blog with some recent BG recces. I know that blogs are not everybodys cup of tea, but it might be interesting for others that might be or thinking about undertaking the Bob Graham challenge. It is my intention to keep the blog updated through to my attempt in May, and any comments and feed back is much appreciated:thumbup:

It'll be a busy at moot hall then :) hi daz what time you setting off ? Hi mark me and bill had the calender out last night and got a load of dates for reccies and supports down so will give you a call later tonight and let you know when were up there and hopefully we can hook up ;) also talk what legs you need support and vice versa, and ive decided against doing Fellsman to help out on Roy and Nigels round if there still after support too. Speak soon mark.

I think its great sharing an experience via the blogs. I would rather read something like that online than a newspaper or something.
I like to hear of an adventure! I'm currently thinking about the bg challenge. I love the lakes and think. It will be a great way to experience more of the hills there. I have a few other challenges to complete first. All the best with your training

one slightly unusual aspect to my situation is that I am also appealing for road support - so anybody out there who doesn't feel as though they'll be fit enough for hill support can still be useful! ;)

As things stand I'm going again on the morning of 22nd June on an anti round with my co-failee from my very first attempt last year Gavin. As far as support and whatnot go I think we are likely to have a core bunch in place but I was leaving things until nearer the time should we need added help. To be honest though I'm sure anyone is free to join in - anticlockwise makes for a really interesting change of perspective and is definitely the way to go ;)

In the same vein I am being very slow coming forward offering support for other's rounds next year unfortunately, mainly because of my completely crazy position at home (I have long split from my wife but we are still living in the same house until we manage to sell it - its been on the market now for yonks now which doesn't help with either my planning... or my sanity). I will though be offering support (Daz and others) once I know better what the fecks going on... and providing I don't come a cropper in a frenzied psycho attack before the house is sold :)

That's the weekend of Midsummer Madness so i will be committed to that as its three races in three days, as soon as your date is sorted let us know and if it changes i am willing to help, in my defence i have done leg 2 17 times and will kick your arse when you need it if going anti.

I don't think I need my own thread really - I'm not going to use it for the minutiae of organising support - more for general appeals

hello Mark. I'm planning new recces in may and why not to be with you for 1,2 or 3 legs... to be confirmed by me and by you ;)

Daz's Weekly Update:

raising of support seems to be going well - quite a few definites, plus a few consulting their diaries!
exclusively hill-support though - could do with a few volunteers for road-support... :)

took day off work yesterday and did Leg 1 plus Clough Head - 7100ft ascent, all pretty much at target pace, so happy with that at this stage...

Put me down for the road Daz. Even if I can't get the Friday night off I can get up to Newlands for your arrival I'm sure!! P.S. 17ths my birthday so I definately will require cake!!

Ah! I am assuming you mean the final road section and not general road crossing support!? Because at present I could only assist from Honister though as we get closer I'll work on getting the friday off or a change to days. :thumbup:

Manhar had kindly volunteered to do the Honister and Dunmail road-support slots,
but I still haven't got anybody for Threlkeld or Wasdale...
(or Newlands for the swap to road-shoes)

I've got at least 2 hill-supportes pencilled in for each leg, but what I'd like to do is have 3 just in case of drop-outs, then if it gets to 17th May and all 3 are keen then so much the better.
So I'm still looking for a 3rd volunteer for each of Legs 2 and 3...

if anybody fancies bagsying any of the above slots, PM me...

Seriously though, I'm planning a run out of over leg 3 next few weeks and I'm reasonably familiar with the route from High Raise onwards. Fitness should hopefully be good as I'll be doing the Welsh 3000 race mid June
