Aye i did it 2 years ago mate. Pretty route. Reasonable amount of climbs. Don't forget to leave a bit for getting onto the edges when u get to Baslow. The descent thru the wood at the end is a bit slippy and route wasn't too well marked , although it said it would be. Good nosh at end. Parking a bit of a mare so get there early. Friendly and good reception at the end.
Anyone on here registered for Grindleford Gallop on Saturday? It's 3 years since I last did it but I recall it to be a very runner-friendly event, and they seem to have gone all professional now, with SPORTident timing. It's full, by the way.
I'm doing the HPM but for those interested the GG is now Full , no EOD!
I was really looking forward to this event, got a place and now have to stay in Belfast for the weekend..so if anyone wants my number, shout :)
I'll be running. I lived round there as a kid so it'll be nice to be back.
Haven't done the race before though. The route description implies some nav but also recommends a route. Is there much choice or is it mostly marked?
I did this for the first time last year and im turning out again this Sat. Probably wise (as always) to carry a map, plus their route description - but last year I found that there was a constant supply of walkers/runners all the way around the course, showing you the way. The other thing I remember is a great pile of custard creams at the Bakewell bookshop check point.
Its a good day out and a great route - very runnable.
I can also remember the state my legs were in by Froggat edge :(
i'm doing this for the first time on saturday
looking forward to the custard creams etc :):)
It's not marked. In theory there are massive shortcuts you could take way off the route, in practice everyone follows the recommended route almost to the letter. If you're following the recommended route there are only a couple of small choices I can think of.
Navigation is pretty easy, there are long trails, the route description is good, and as a runner you'll have plenty of walkers lined out over Longstone Moor to help out.
Just remember to come off the Monsal Trail, and make sure you don't miss a dibber point as the organiser said last year he'd disqualify anyone who missed one.
The first part has a few gates/squeeze stiles, a quick start will avoid queues, but you'll suffer more on the first climb out of Froggatt over to Eyam.
good race yesterday, a little hard underfoot (could be down to shoe choice on the day), and even the rain held off
excellent soup with cheese and bread and a nice square of date (?) cake with sweet coffee
my only gripe is with the fellow runner who was moaning that he didn't have enough soup put into his bowl after paying such a high entry fee...considering all the money the organisers would have made..etc etc YAWN YAWN
i mean come on they would have wanted the soup eating for them next
apart from that...Brill...highly recommended.
I agree, a really fun day out with excellent organisation, great marshalls and lovely cake. They even arranged good weather.
Bizarrely my legs are fine today: now I've got that niggling 'should have tried harder' feeling, although it certainly didn't feel that way going over Froggatt Edge :)
Excellent day, thanks all.
Clare (no.49)
Yes, my legs definitely felt well-used during and after the race: I'm really surprised they feel good now. Maybe the soreness will hit later today. Hope yours wears off soon S :)
Entry number 49, finish number probably about 449 :)
Glad you enjoyed it SS - even without Custard Creams en route! Didn,t see you at the end but Mr Piglet assured me you had a very good run. Did you get any of the chocolate rice crispy cake? That was particulary good :D Great day out!!
thanks Ja....oops i mean piglet (keep the anonymity)
yes had a good run 2hr 45 (8th), although suffered a bit on froggat edge and lost a place, and possibly a few minutes :(
had to shoot off at the end after soup to pick daughter up
did eye the rice crispy cake, but was sternly told only one piece only, so with frazzled brain just picked the nearest one to me
hope you and anne did well, and thank Mr Piglet for the encouragement en route. did i see him more than once ? if so apologise for my ignorance
well done to all , it's a lovely run. The whinging tosspot who said about half full soup bowl should be banned , no shot then banned.
Hi Ian - who or what is CC?? Dont think I can make it tonight - i'll come next week for the final run/drink thingy - had a totter on very stiff legs round Rivelin yesterday - not really sure if there up to much tonight!! Were all be at Lads Leap on Sun!!
Results are now available here

That was great fun, and I was pleased with just over 3 hours, although felt like I should have started quicker.
Friendly people, great cake and a really nice route.
I'll be back.
14th March.

There is no listing for this in the handbook but is anyone running it. I don't know too much about it but I've signed up anyway. Did Nine Edges last year which was great so I'm hoping for more of the same.
I did it last year as PPP training. It's a really nice route, although the trail section from Hassop is a bit dull.
Save some for the final ascent to Froggatt Edge and the descent back to Grindleford - it's a great final few miles and a chance to really make up some places!
Good soup and butties at the finish too.
Enjoy
Am doing this one again from last year...good event
if its moderately dry underfoot i would go for road shoes as the trail bit and the bit through chatsworth estate are hard underfoot, but if wet....and i mean WET i would go for trail shoes
agree with the comment about froggat edge..its a long climb out after a few miles of cross country
Sorry to be cheeky but would anyone be able to point me towards a map of the route? I've seen the route description on the Gallop website but it doesn't look all that easy to follow and I would like to recce within the next few weeks.
Thanks
I was just cranking up the GG website over a quiet desk bound lunch when a female colleague here said " Oh, my son used to go to the school and I helped doing the tea with that a few years ago. You get some real nutters running at the front. I remember one passed out and another threw up all over his shoes!"
But seriously...
Does anyone know what time this starts.
Can't find any mention of it on the website. Given that the start is just down the road from the station, I might just make this one if it's not too early.
10 am start for runners
According to website a more detailed route description and map will be available soon
I did this a few years ago and am doing this year.
The climb from the old Station in Bakewell is very muddy/slippy and steep. I agree with comments re egdes, save energy to climb onto them. Good food stops if needed .Can enter online too. Parking can be difficult:meaning long walk to start so factor that in for travelling.
I've decided to have another go at this.
Alf's right - the run to the start (before the race) and the stagger back to the car (at the end) feel like a long way! Parking is by the station.
I've done this 4 or 5 times and really enjoy the route, thing is I also enjoy the Trollers Trot which I've not done so often so will be going up for that instead this year.
I might have a map on my home computer, I'll try to remember to check.
I find it's a pretty easy route to follow. It's mostly fast runnable terrain on good tracks, and I agree you can make up a lot of time on others if you have something left for the good running through Chatsworth and along the Edges. The railway stretch is quite dull and you often have walkers + poles 4 abreast to deal with, but if like me you're carp on hills it's nice to make up some time.
A quick start is needed to prevent getting held up through the first few hand gates. There's only 4 climbs, the first not long after the start between Froggat and Eyam which gets muddy at the top through scrub. Longstone Moor is a very gradual ascent and even if it's been wet is usually okay. The climb after you leave the old railway and go through the old golf course can be very muddy, but isn't that long. The final climb is tarmac or good track out the back of Baslow and seems to go for ever at that stage but isn't too bad. There's a slight rise just after Curbar Gap which wouldn't normally be that noticeable but is if you've overcooked it earlier.
Food is good at the end, though I think they had to start rationing it to one cake per person in the last couple of years :(
If the field's wet parking is a problem. I've parked in the pub on the road to Hathersage before, there's a ginnel that runs straight down to the event centre. It's private land obviously, but if you're going for a few pints afterwards I don't think they'd mind.

I might just make this one if it's not too early.[/quote]
Oooh! Battle of the Piglets then :D
Its a lovey pictursque run and easy to follow as theres loads of people about as others have pointed out.
Dont worry - you'll beat me easy:rolleyes:
As long as there's no heffalumps about I'll be happy. And er it's been said ere before YOU WILL BEAT ME EASY
Is there a different start time for walkers then? If you started out walking and then when warmed up started running would you be in trouble?
It was the possibilty of doing both over a distance of which I am capable but would be a push plus the train access which made this attractive!!
Tiddly pom......
Going on previous years, walkers set out when they like. Runners have had Sportident dibbers the last few times, so if you are entered as a runner and set off early don't dib anywhere otherwise you'll mess up the results and the organiser had a bit of a rant about this a couple of years back.
He also had a go at people for not dibbing at a checkpoint that was a hundred metres or so before it used to be. It had supposedly been moved to the correct gridref that had always been given out with the description but it still wasn't right... of course nothing was said about it moving at the start.
If you're entered as a walker I don't see they'd be any problem with running some of it, in this kind of event I often find the first 'walkers' have been running parts and only catch them up near the end, whilst the back end of the runners are slower than the quickers walkers. I guess it's pride which category you enter as :)
This is a great event. I've done it many times and wish I could this year but it clashes with Wuthering Hike, unfortunately. Lots of excellent advice has already been offered. Navigation should not be a problem. I used to go on the rolling walkers' start and there was no problem jogging a bit. My main advice would be to feed well to keep the energy levels up and save something for the final run along the edge and down to the finish. It took me years to learn how to do that and move from being the overtaken to the overtaker. :)
