I'm planning to do this one at the end of May but it's a bit of a slog by public transport. I live in Bolton so if there's anyone round this way who's doing it, I would be very glad of a lift. I am willing to help out with the petrol costs.

Mr Invisible - not withstanding the fact that I may not be able to see you ;) (Sorry I couldn't resist) if you don't receive a more convenient offer as I am looking to do this race if you could get to Ashton under Lyne railway station or Stockport station I would be willing to drive you there. Would be willing to take you back to Bolton on the return journey.
Thanks Manhar, Stockport will be easy enough to get to. Let me know what time and I'll check out the timetables.
Mr Invisible
According to the AA route planner (poor man's Sat nav) from Ashton it will take 2 hrs 7 mins. Consequently if we aim to get there an hr before kick off (2:00) I would aim to pick you up at 10:45 approx if that is Ok with you.
Me too....took us an age to get there last year. will be making the journey to race again this year though. cracking race...just hope that the weather is a bit better this year, and that we will be able to see somthing of the welsh mountains this time   ....foggy and damp last year, which made it interesting on the descent (well for me anyhow)
There are trains that will get me to Ashton at 9:37, 10:07 or 10:37. From other replies, one of the earlier ones would probably be best.
We lurkers would recommend allowing longer too.
Whilst the organisation is excellant, everyone is very friendly, its a lovely town, I think the actual race route is fairly ordinary. Quite a bit on the road, then up a fairly long even slog. Although it may not be feasible for a race, there are plenty of more intersting circuits over the mountain.
Compare it with Tarrenhendre race route for example.
What's are the paths like underfoot on this race? Specifically how rough is the pony path?
I'm still not fully trusting the stability of my ankle so want to pick my races for the next month or so, but this looks like it may be a goer.
Also as it's mainly on paths what footwear do people go with? Are road shoes preferable, or are the paths still rocky and muddy enough to stick with proper fell shoes?
Thanks
Iain
It's a mixture. The first section is on roads. Last year, there was a total swamp by the lake, then it is a rocky path all the way to the summit. I seemed to remember that the rocky path was the sort of thing where you could jump from rock to rock rather than worry about small rocks moving under your feet. That may be an unreliable recollection though. The descent is the same as the ascent, but you can cut some of the zig zags off by running through the heather.
I'd have thought that trail shoes would be OK and running shoes might be. You won't get much traction by the lake in road shoes, but I don't think anything would give you traction in swamp conditions.
I did it with an unstable knee last year and took a couple of huge flying lobs at the top. I still have flashbacks of my face potentially being rearranged on a boulder (my face missed, my hand didn't).
It's a great race with a great atmosphere and well supported by friends, families and tourists.
Paths easy, smooth, not rough, bit rocky at the top but not much. Lots on the road so i would wear trail or road shoes not walshes. Very dry when we were going through there at the begining of May, no lakes!
Llyn Gwernan dried out in early May? Last year, we were actually running through the lake on race day as it had risen above the path.
Ah, didn't go down there!
Trail shoes it is then. Useful info that folks, thanks.
This'll be my first ever fell race on a 'mountain'. Though I have done some in Shropshire, Peak District, and the LDMTA Mountain Trial. I'm very slow indeed, but chose this as it seems popular, and I hoped that there would be quite a few runners, and I wouldn't be too far off the back.
I'm concerned about the cut-off at 1hr 15mins. I think it'll be very tight indeed whether I can make it. Does anyone know how strictly it's enforced? Would they let you through if they can see you coming? I'd anticipated my overall time as being around 2.45. There have been people finishing in around 3hrs some years, so I have to presume they made the cut-off.
You should be OK, some races have been very tightly enforced, but others not so. It really depends on the organisers and I think the weather on the day.
Cheers Iain. I'll definitely be having a go anyway (along with my pal, who is a complete first timer, but recent marathon runner!)
The first 1.5 miles on road will be a big help in meeting the cut-off. I reckon this bit will take around 20+ minutes, and then 50 minutes up to CP3. So you can see it will be very very tight indeed.
I notice the rules are asking for full WATERPROOF body cover. Do you know if they'll accept the usual montane windproofs, or does it have to be waterproof? Could be a problem for my pal :(
i cant sem to find any info on this race - checkpoints cut offs - any clues anyone? thanks
Clue. You're away!

You'll be fine with the windproof.
Manhar, I've replied to your p.m. but my sent box says it has no messages in it. I'll be at Stockport at 9:55 on Saturday.
Invisible
Nothing in my in box - sack the system administrator say I (!)
Will be at Stockport just before 9:55.
Regards
See you there Manhar. Looks like it should be a good day for it, mild, dry and sunny.
KFC for tea, now on 4 tins of stella, good pre race preparation.
Any one else going......see you on the start line.
With regards
Gaz
I'm doing it just done burnley lions 10k as preparation. I think not.
See you all tomorrow.
Should be a good one tomorrow, bring your sun block.
Looking forward to tomorrow...just hope I can make the cut off time! Is the secret to hammer the first 4K or so which is relatively flat?
Jimbob,
You could blast the first 4k but there's a nasty boggy stretch around the lake that really saps your strength (out and back). I'd be inclined to hold back a bit and run the 4k hard at the end.
Notice you're Mold based, there will be a few of us Clwydian Range Runners there tomorrow if you're looking for people to train with. Look out for the black vests.
Good luck for tomorrow!
may take you up on that poptyping, I'll be the one at the back with the black/red Wrecsam Tri top.
Good race today, but a real tough one for my first mountain race. Found the going up to the summit difficult and the decent tricky to say the least. Good run Daleside, I followed you most of the way down the hill, you ran really strongly. Manhar nice to have chat with you today, well done on your run as well. Gaz had a stomping 40th placing - it was worth the 250 mile round trip mate!!
.....and a spot prize to go with that place.
Great day out with really good organisation. Many thanks to all involved.
Cheers:)

My longest and highest fell race yet and only a week after the Windermere Marathon but a great day out. Whether climbing over big rocks or having the smaller ones sliding under my feet, it was really hard going. I was sure that I would miss the cut off but then I was approaching the summit and hadn't even noticed the checkpoint. Coming down was harder in a way and I went flat on my face in the woods but finished very strongly back on the road.
Great butties and scones at the finish.
Many thanks to Manhar for picking me up and dropping me back in Bolton.
A lovely day out but then I guess we were lucky with the weather but I think I'll leave it to the experts in future.
Cracking race, had a really good run except for dodgy blisters. Widdy were you the one in the Rochdale vest that i passed on the road out?
I run for near rivals Rossendale. Sky blue vest.
How did you get on?
Thought I saw the Rossy vest. To be honest I was happy to get round in one piece, not really my cup of tea, but enjoyed it all the same. I think I was in the last third of the field of 200 with a time over 2 hours 10 mins. Prefer races which have some good running across the tops rather than straight up and down. How did you do?
Well done all.
Really enjoyed the day, and what a friendly race! I'm glad to say we made the cut off in plenty of time, but overall were slower than I anticipated. But we actually weren't last (though I think we were 3rd and 4th from last). But hey, someone has to be at the end of races, and we had a super day out :D
Thanks to all the other runners who gave us plenty of encouragement and kind words as they hurtled past us on the way down.
