BGR attempt this Saturday 25th
Hi all,
After supporting on a number of occasions I have decided to try and complete the round myself. I'm over whelmed at the support I have received for my attempt and would like to thank all involved. If any forum followers are in the area on Saturday please say hello as we pass by. I will be leaving Moot Hall at midnight 24th / 25th. May I also wish the attempt taking place on the 26th the best of look and that we are both blessed with good weather.
You may have noticed I'm waffelling a bit, its the nerves they have really kicked in now with the thought of the task in front of me but after months of training I will stand tall and hope to full fill a dream, like most one that I have carried for years.
Well done to all who completed the round in the recent bad weather regardless of the time it was like being there whilst following the trackers and to those that still have to share their fate with destiny.

Re: BGR attempt this Saturday
Hey up Wingman - its gunna be an epic day and after this winters weather we've trained through the forecast seems to be shaping up nicely (and for the guy youre handing the baton on to).
Only one more (fitful) nights sleep to endure and we can get this show on the road - see you at basecamp late afternoon m8.

Re: BGR attempt this Saturday
Hopefully I have done this right, this is a link to the tracker James has kindly loaned me whilst I do the Bob Graham Round.

Re: BGR attempt this Saturday
It's a stunning day in Keswick. The only things in the sky are swifts! Good luck to everyone attempting this weekend
-
Re: BGR attempt this Saturday
I'm on the tracker again and "progressing nicely" I think would be a term used.
Good luck Wingman.

Re: BGR attempt this Saturday
What schedule is Dave on? Seems to be topping out on the Steel Fell climb right now (@0915)

Re: BGR attempt this Saturday
According to the trace on my screen he swam across Grisedale Tarn. I suppose this is just what Bob was talking about on the parallel thread about GPS trackers - there are some places where coverage is non-existent and the best the unit can do is assume a straight line between two points.

Re: BGR attempt this Saturday
Hes on a completion schedule and hopefully under 24 - stunning day here really unbelievable. Yeah we lafed when we saw the grizedale tarn swim! Time for brecky now then hotfoot to Wasdale. Cmon Wingman!!

I can only get 1:50 on the top magnification setting. Dave looks to be going well

Re: BGR attempt this Saturday
Just using the tracker to pick up some route tips for the Helvellyn race tomorrow though I must remember not to visit every summit on the way to Helvellyn and back

Yep its limited to 1:50 - using OS Open Space API http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswe.../os-openspace/
Be interesting to find out from Dave how the unit is being carried as he did seem to go for a swim and then bounce around the gill on the way down to Dunmail. Will ask Rob our web guy to look at signal strength on the GPS, for that section. The trackers do struggle to get a good fix if moving fast and being tossed around inside a bumbag or rucksac.
Fella is doing well.

Re: BGR attempt this Saturday
What's happened at Wasdale? Surely he didn't go back up the hill??
-
Re: BGR attempt this Saturday
Glad to see the tracker update and he's at the top of Yewbarrow now.....phew! Thought something terrible had happened.
-
Re: BGR attempt this Saturday
Ya from the previous two rounds using this device it is obvious that Wasdale Head is a phone reception black spot.
-
Re: BGR attempt this Saturday
Wonder what happened between Dore Head and Red Pike?

Re: BGR attempt this Saturday
Just seen on going thread come on Dave keep going mate:thumbup:

Re: BGR attempt this Saturday
8.24 PM Dave's tracker is definitely not performing that well. Be interesting to hear how he is carrying it. Lets hope it picks up when he gets out of Honister.
9.25 PM Some really sketchy tracking on this one, rare we have seen this. Hold caution about where Dave is, he is probably having a wonderful time on one of the best evenings the Lake District is having this year.

Re: BGR attempt this Saturday
Hi unfortunately I hit a really bad patch at kirk fell. I realised that under the circumstances I had to retire, I'm sure most of you where wondering where I was going.A decision was made that the easiest and safest thing was to drop back to Wasdale and return via styhead pass to seathwaite whilst one of my support headed to honister to inform my crew and send a car to collect me. Two of my support crew then headed up from seathwaite to meet us part way with head torches this became one of the hardest decision I have made.
The tracker is a peice of kit I think everyone should carry because when things went wrong I knew I could be found which filled me with confidence when I needed it.
I would like to thank my support crew and everyone on the forum for helping me have one of the most memerable days and hardest I have had even though I didn't make it to the finish.

Re: BGR attempt this Saturday
Tough luck Dave, difficult decision to make when so near the end. Hope you recover and consider another go :)
-
Re: BGR attempt this Saturday
Sorry to hear this Wingman. Wishing you a speedy recovery and I'll be cheering on the tracker when you have another go xx. Well done to all your support crew too for keeping you safe. :)

Re: BGR attempt this Saturday
James,
Does the tracker device keep an accurate log of where it's been and what we see on the live update page is a bug in the reporting/transmitting mechanism? I know you've posted about how the device "sleeps" some functionality to save battery life which seems eminently sensible - my phone's battery life goes from two days to around 5hrs when I use a GPS enabled app like Strava - might this have something to do with it? Have you run comparisons between the live data and that pulled directly from the unit?
Might be worth starting a new thread about this rather than clutter up a thread about attempts.

Re: BGR attempt this Saturday
Swimming the tarn at the bottom of Fairfield and Hill reps on Scafell will not have helped.
Onwards and upwards wingman.
Next time Sir, next time.
