Age 40, any good news?
I have 10 days left of my 30s and i am profoundly depressed about it.
Permanent loss of brain cells.
3 times more likely to get cancer.
Double the chance of osteoporosis.
Irreversible loss of skin elasticity.
85% of eggs infertile.
Decreased maximum heart rate.
Lower metabolic rate.
Increased fat retention.
Weaker muscle adaptation to training.
Acceleration of tooth loss.
Irreversible decline in hearing, vision, taste and smell.
Impending urinary incontinence.
Apart from a new vet category and not being dead, is there any good news?

Yes! You're a whole decade away from being 50!

Cheaper car insurance? The rest is shit.

Re: Age 40, any good news?
Don't beleive any of it, I am fitter at near 50 than at 40, hell I am only just getting started now, life begins at 40 not ends, game on, grimp reaper catch me if you can!
Oh don't stress too much is the advice I would give.

Re: Age 40, any good news?
Fab! My fourties have so far been the best decade of my life! I am 48 now, so two more years to go, but I have definitely been fitter than I have been and have achieved some pretty good stuff, sports wise and otherwise. It has been the most fun I have had so far in my life :)

Re: Age 40, any good news?
I know you already tend to win most races but you're defo going to win v40. Also, but this may not apply to you, when I turned 40 I stopped giving a shit about my appearance. Now I just shave/haircut when my wife tells me.

Re: Age 40, any good news?
Mmmmm, now let me think back a bit  1. The kids were at an age where they didn't need babysitters and I was looking forward to them leaving home so I could replace them with stray dogs :)
2. I was comfortable enough in my own skin to go to the shops without doing my hair.
3. If I didn't like someone's opinion I gave them mine (in a nice way).
4. I discovered mountains, climbed one and didn't die (I still hate Crib Goch) ..... Then climbed several hundred more.
5 - 50. I forget as its all been mad, wonderful, fabulousness of crazy good stuff.
Oooo, and best of all I met MrRTS at 50 and married him :)
So my fab 40's have now turned into my fit 50's

Re: Age 40, any good news?
Blooming heck...how depressing! I never even thought about that stuff when I turned 40.
In my 30s my long term relationship broke up, I sold my house and have never afforded to buy another and my dad died of cancer. Major turning points but since then I've travelled the world, become a full-time artist, live in a place that I love and have met someone that I'm really happy with. Life gets better and better and I'd say I'm fitter, healthier, slimmer, more successful, more fulfilled and more confident. I'm 42. I'm with Hanneke on this, my forties have been great so far. Why concentrate on the negatives when there are so many positives?

Re: Age 40, any good news?
I can't really say I've noticed the rolling of the decades. I tend to just crack on! Though as a basic I'd say I'm happier now than I've ever been. When I turned 30 and 40 I did go out and do something to test my fitness but at 50 I didn't bother. looking forward to 60 and retiring tbh! :)

Re: Age 40, any good news?
Well if you're gonna be like that, then the only plus-point I can think of is the bonus FF points.. don't let me down ;)
Like the way you've made absolutely sure everyone knows about it.. one mega-40th-bash coming up?? And just think how many people know you and care about you, whether you win the races or not. More than ever in your life probably? Legendary descender, among other things. I'd say we're all lucky, and lucky to be in fell-running, can't think of a better bunch of people anywhere.

Re: Age 40, any good news?
Thanks for replies.. just for the record, it was meant to be tongue-in-cheek.. i'm not really depressed. I concur with the posts about it being the best time of your life. Being serious for a second, i've never been happier, healthier and fitter.. i am really looking forward to my 40s. There is so much i want to do and can do. It's true that youth is wasted on the young though, i wish i knew what i know now when i was 20 :). The best thing about being 40 is that it has focused my mind on what i want to do with my life and not trying to live it to please other people.. as has been said by Hes/RTS et al, more confident, don't care what people think, about appearance etc. Mind you i was never much into appearance.. i just finished a tube of make up which i started in 6th form!
Can't agree with cheaper car insurance though.. mine has doubled in the last 5 years! :)

Yes well spotted L.. party after Wasdale anyone?
Agreed, fell running is the best and fell runners are the best people!

Becoming 40 you are closer to death than when you were 30. You won't have to put up with all this misery for quite so long now. Great feeling

I had assumed you’d been making highly calculated fashion statement!

Re: Age 40, any good news?
It's not too bad being over 40 in the UK. If you lived in Zambia, Angola or Swaziland, you'd probably be dead already. Scary eh.
I'm told life begins at 40, but then I'm told that 50 is the new 40 and 60 is the new 50. It's like Catch 22. "Life" only "begins" for me when I get my pension. Which will be when I'm about 75. I'm looking forward to seeing what it's like.

Women are like a fine wine. They get better with age. One of my lady friend's certainly has. Phew, she's an animal!

LD, in a similar vein to the above two posts, you are a woman who is now maturing into her prime. Don't let it frighten you. Enjoy it.

When women become 40 they can become a 'cougar' which may be fun for a couple of years!

Re: Age 40, any good news?
Hello Chester! Nice...... is there a smiley face thing for envy?
Cougar.... also known as the Mountain Lion.... very apt!

Re: Age 40, any good news?
I'm meeting Chester on Sunday.. if i get him he's going to need a better name, so anyone got any suggestions? He's Scottish, so maybe something tennis-related or something in Gaelic! (Btw i am not calling him Andy, though i am a big fan).
p.s. BW, lions are lazy buggers, let the lionesses do all the work.
-
Re: Age 40, any good news?
What's wrong with his name? He looks like a Chester.

What does a bloke become? A "badger" perhaps, reflecting the streaks of white hair?

Re: Age 40, any good news?
ha ha! Good term. I was putting up an exhibition on Saturday with a group of 10 older women (most in their late fifties/sixties) and we asked the young stone carver who has a studio nearby if we could borrow some of his breeze blocks to make pedestals. I've never seen anything like it. He's young and very fit and quite good looking and the women were all over him. He did ok out of it and went away laden down with cake and biscuits but he did seem a bit embarrassed. I now see how women are no different to men when they are in groups...if we'd been on a building site they'd have been shouting and whistling! I'd like to point out that I was hefting the breeze blocks about and not taking part in the adulation ;)

I agree, he does.. it's just that the name holds bad associations for me. When i worked in New Zealand in 2002 we had a patient called Chester, a Scottie terrier who was a prize winning show dog. He was apparently Scottie royalty and his owner's wanted to cash in on this by using him as a stud. The only flaw in their lucrative plan was that Chester was 100% homosexual.. a bitch in heat did nothing for him. Undeterred, they asked us to do artificial insemination every time Chester's services were required. It fell to me to do this task on a regular basis, on account of me, for reasons i know not, getting the largest and quickest samples (and it was my first time :o). In the end Chester would start dry humping at the mere sight of me gloving up. I am not proud of this and it is not what i went to vet school for! So every time i hear the word Chester i am reminded of these events which have scarred my psyche.. even driving round the Chester ring road is stressful. So there is no way in hell i am having a dog of that name in my house for the next 13 years.. it has to change!!

Agreed. I went to school with a lad who reckoned his grandad's job used to be "wanking off pit ponies" (his words not mine). Apparently you don't want a randy horse down a mine. Makes sense I suppose. Anyway, it was a good incentive to pay attention in school lest I ended up on that particular career path.

I feel sure that pit ponies were castrated and that dear old grandad was in fact a pervert!
