Waterproof Gloves /Mitts

My typical winter glove option is a waterprrof shell (Montane mitts) over a standard inexpensive liner glove. My Montanes have been okay, but are often full of water and are now pretty much goosed, so I need a new solution.

Anyone have any recommendations? If I repeat the mitt shell option, there seems to be OMMKamlieka or Inov8 shells.

Have also seen these Sealskinz gloves, which are claimed as waterproof, and if so would be great for dexterity, and perhaps could be put under a shell for total proofing? - https://www.sealskinz.com/ultra-grip...black-grey.htm

Buffalo mitts. Lousy grip but I've never had cold hands with them on and always had cold hands with any other glove tries.

Buffalo mitts are definitely well toasty and my preferred option when it goes below freezing. Not particularly waterproof though but to be honest, I'm yet to find any that really are. The inov8 all terrain pro mitts are not fully waterproof either. Bought these from PBS at the LDMT 2 years ago. Admittedly the weather was of biblical proportions but they were soaked by CP2. They were still warm though!

No gloves are waterproof as there is this huge hole at one end. I find the best way to keep my hands warm is to keep my body warm, and to keep the wind off my hands. If you are on true fell, and handling rocks from time to time, it will wear out a lot of gloves (Sealskins for example) very quickly. Those that don't wear out quickly are usually heavy and bulky, particularly once wet. The best compromise I have found are the Venta Arcteryx gloves - windproof, relatively lightweight, and long-wearing.

I found the Inov8 ones pretty good, if a bit small around the wrist making them a bit harder to get on but a good warm cover for the price. They saw me through some pretty rough days on the hill and I believe they now come with a wrist strap (i sewed my own in) to make losing them whilst faffing with your hands less likely.

Pretty hacked off that they didn't come back from the OMM - I was losing gloves all weekend and I get the feeling they accidentally ended up in the skip at mid-camp having been placed next to a rubbish pile

Last night we were out over Whernside in pretty wet but incredibly windy conditions. I was totally cushty in Buffalo mitts, albeit they were very wet & soggy on returning to Ribblehead.
My (much younger and fitter) running partner was wearing what appeared to be lighter but more 'technical' gloves (I don't know their actual provenance) and she was really suffering with her hands.

I agree with Mike - Venta Arc'teryx gloves are the best. I used them for ski touring as well. Now, as I'm not able to ski anymore, I wear these for each run.

I bought a pair of fleece lined waterproof mitts over two years ago from Mountain Warehouse. They have been great and all for £15!

If I'm out in the cold and rain I wear a pair of dispoable gloves inside my Buffs or Sealskin, never get wet or cold.

I didn't want to spend £40-50 on some Extremities Mitts, so got some Army Surplus ones on ebay like below.
The inner is warm and the outer is light and goretex - tried and tested.
Would recommend, especially for the price

Cold hands are the bane of my winter fell running (and sometimes in the summer too!). I've tried a whole range of different gloves/mitts of various materials, and most have proven less than satisfactory, always leading to disappointment.

Up until this winter, the best option for me was a pair (or two - one in reserve) of Sealskinz, 'waterproof' (!) gloves with a merino liner. Not bad, but eventually they too let the water in and my hands start to chill, despite the merino lining.

So, this winter I've eschewed the outdoor shops and I've been trying a pair of work-gloves from my local building suppliers. After a couple of months of wearing these for running and dog-walking (wet Frisbee throwing) on the fells, I've been impressed. They most certainly are liquid proof, having been designed to cope with a range of chemicals, and can take a far deal of abrasion too. Initially, I was a bit suspicious that wearing what appear to be rubber gloves might have a 'marigold' effect, causing sweat, etc. - but no, all good.

I've only tried the 'zero' version of Maxidry, as they have a synthetic 'fleece' lining, so feel comfortable against the skin.

I use a pair of basic Nike running gloves (the thin type you see in all the commercial running shops).

To be honest they generally do the job for me 90% of the winter... however i pair them up with a big pair of skiing type gloves when it gets really cold.

On a vaguely interesting note, my coach is really big on preventing suffering/injury through the cold.... basically between the autumn and spring road relays (ie between late september/early october, and end of march), we are generally expected to turn up to training in long sleeves and bottoms.

Thanks Mossdog. They look good. I've tried so many gloves over the years. I recently got some lightweight Inov8 waterproof mitts, which are great, but I've already punctured them on a barb wire fence (probably shouldn't have been climbing it!).

I think body temperature is a factor too. If you are poorly dressed your circulation will shut down to your extremities, shorts in winter is a prime example.

Could not agree more - so many runners complain of cold hands despite gloves, but they have minimal or no cover from ankle to groin despite rain/snow/wind. They are just asking for chilblains.

For the record I usually wear Arcteryx Venta gloves, with glove liners underneath if it is very cold. In extremis - perhaps 5 times a year - I wear Marmot mitts.

Yes.

On my bike whilst I sometimes wear woollen gloves inside some that are more water resistant in the depths of winter I wear a thick dpd glove. It is so thick subtle breakng is difficult but at least I can feel my fingers and don't fear frost bite.
