any one taking part on saturday, this is my first venture over this distance
Yup, I'll be there.... looking forward to it. Recce'd the route over the Bank Holiday weekend and it's a classic... Most of the best bits of the Peak District wrapped up in one tiny package ;-)
P.
I plan to be there also. Another jaunt around the Peak, let's hope for a cool clear day.
Forecast at the moment is for sunny, around 17 degrees and a v. light NE wind - pretty good, I'd say!
P.
I'm doing it. :) Just done my last run beforehand and recce'd the new Cadster Farm diversion.
what do you think of that section
I'll be there but not running this year. See you all at the start and at points on route. I'll try to have the jellybabies at hand.
JB,
Not a massive fan, probably as I'm use to the old route and it seems a little easier to run. It was fast running to the road and then a simple climb to Eccles Road. The new route appears to be a little more complicated than that.
We'll look forward to seeing you pass us. It's a very friendly event, and we see many runners year after year. Any requests for tea or bacon butties?
Sounds great, Marvin.
You haven't got a second house around Chelmorton, have you? :)
The route seems to have a lot of road or hard paved paths, Any one thinking of road shoes? I was going to go with trail shoes.
was also thinking about road shoes, spoke to a couple of last years runners who sais you can get away with road shoes, apart from the little rain we having now the off road ground is still quite hard
A lot of HP40 is road or hard trails and as it hasn't rained for a while I'd say wear some road/trail shoes with cushioning - your feet will thank you afterwards. I wrote up this event a few years back - you may be interested ... http://www.cs.man.ac.uk/~temples/hc/high-peak-40.html

Good to see the forumites who were taking part. Everyone looked very hot as they came up the hill past the house, but I guess that overall the conditions were reasonable, if a bit hard under foot. Let us know how you got on.
Hi Marvin thanks for the encouragement as I ran? up past your house, very nice, must be very tricky in winter. I came in around 40th I think in 7.39ish(didn't stop my watch) and was too tired to go back and check, a fast race but far too much road esp up to Chelmorton. it gives me the shakes to think about. Loved Deep Dale at the end, fine sport.
Once again thanks to the Marshalls, lots of food and well sign posted.
How did you get on at Lantern Pike.
Ian
well done to all, strangly enjoyed myself although cramped in a couple of places. just coming down from jaffa cake overdose but helped me get round in 7.30. thank to the marshals
So who is running this one tomorrow? I'll be the one sipping tea and offering words of encouragement as you walk up the gentle incline of Milton Lane from Tunstead Milton.:D
I hear the entries are up on last year - around 200 this time.
Have just put in my entry... has anyone got a detailed route map or GPS plot so I can do some recces?
Hi Nik,
This gives you a very rough idea - http://www.cs.man.ac.uk/temples-bin/...f=high-peak-40 - it's only the check-points, but I'm sure you could work out your route from there.
There might be some clues as to best lines etc in the race reports at www.runfurther.com too
have a word with Al or his bro Mark he done it quite a few times and sure will have a plot
but to be honest it pretty straightforward
2 files with route maps on coming up. These are big files.

Its a nice event and was pretty well sign-posted bar monsal dale viaduct (turn right & don't go up the hill assuming the people in front of you know where they are going..!) Also found that the kit list interpretations were 'interesting' out of four who missed the turn I was the only person with a map, the head torch also didn't seem required unless you were going through the Hope village check point at a certain time in the afternoon. I completed in about 8 1/2 hours and was in way before the light was going to be an issue so could have carried an awful lot less weight.
The route at Cadster isn't quite right on the first of these maps. Having crossed Elnor Lane, and climbed up to the ridge, keep right, just below where the old reservoir used to be - don't drop down to the houses at Cadster or you'll have to climb again. The route for this section is described here on the HP40 website.
Thanks Marvin. Didn't check the map - must have been pre the diversion. Rest of it will be fine though.
My advice for anyone doing this for the first time - comfy shoes! Quite a lot of the route is on hard packed trails and there is quite a bit of road so some cushioning might be appropriate if you like to be nice to your joints. I've missed this race for the last few years as it clashes with Lantern Pike but I did write up my run in 2004 - if anyone is interested look here...

As Marvin has pointed out, the route has changed recently on the approach to Eccles Pike.
Cheers, Steve
Think I might have been talked into having a run out at this at the weekend. It's September 19
You'll love it, DT. It's far more runnable than the Long Tour Of Bradwell. Times for the two are coming out similar for some, and that's comparing 32 miles with 40 miles.
The Full Yorkshireman will be perfect prep then DT!
So good I entered it twice. I'm only running it once though, if that: I went off on an over-optimistic schedule last year, & was trashed by Castleton. This year my main aim is to burn off Britnick (assuming you're going to be there Nick). Actually my main aim is to finish.
A very good day out, with perhaps just a bit too much road. Who can run the fastest from Mam Tor down into Castleton with all their teeth intact?
Where are the details for this one? Ta.
www.highpeak40.co.uk but it appears to be down at the moment.
Splatcher, that would be a yes from me, and burning me off may be easier than you think. I didn't call myself ultraploddernick for nothing. ;)
Do I sense a frisson of competition? Does this mean I need to get some proper training in? Oh bum.
I feel an entry to the Chatsworth Challenge coming on as a warm-up.
This all feels very one-sided though. You seem to know who I am but do I know who you are? (I'd probably be none the wiser if I knew your real name, so no need to blow your cover.)
Wait a minute. It's coming to me. You're the one who gave me some useful pointers for the WPW route finding, yes? You'll hammer me on the HP40, by about an hour, I would wager. I don't need to bother training now. Aahh, relax.
Correct. Not serious competition though - I'm only racing myself really, & I've no intention of ever getting into a sprint finish. It's just that we were about matched last year, then you were beating me earlier this year, so I thought I'd better lose a few pounds & get a bit more running in before the WPW - No. 2 on my favourites list. I ran a blinder on the WPW though, & I'm not expecting to match that again this year. Mind you, I have got to keep fit for another few weeks: the Across Wales Walk is on 5 September & I've got a target of 9h59m for that. Then I can blob out.
And I'll only get an hour ahead of you on the HP40 if you run it in diving boots.
