GOING UP TO DO A COUPLE OF HILL TOMORROW ANYONE ELSE UP THERE?
I'd be interested to hear anyone's outline training schedule for 3P, see if I have got it wrong. I am aiming for around 4:45 (5:05 last year, crippled by calf cramps and blisters):
For long runs I am hoping to do the following:
16/2 - 14 miles/2000' [done]
25/2 - 16 miles/1200' or 2300' depending on whether on own or with FLM folk
4/3 - sadly bin Noon Stone on 3rd and do 18 miles/2500'
10/3 - nationals so only 7m
18/3 - 20 miles/~2600'
25/3 - 13.1 flat, fast half marathon
1/4 - not sure - 20 ish
Rest of April - taper and to what?
During week run 4 or 5 times in total, replacing Tuesday speedwork with easier session if legs start aching in bed at night.
I think time on your feet matters, if you going to be running for 4 3/4 hours you need to be used for being out for something like that amount of time,
looks like your doing plenty john,im doing noonstone and pendle half ill do the miles during the week but i think its best to get your legs used to the terrain.
Personally, I'd get a couple more 20-milers in in April John and start easing off a fortnight before the race, but that may not suit everybody.
have you been up to the race route to train john or are you leaving it until the day? seams your at abouy my level and pace ,me and a pal ran whernside and inglebrough un about 3.30 on sunday (i was holding him up) will go up again before race and do siomething similar
Hi All,
This is a very interesting thread, I am panicking a little due to the fact that my longest run is only upto 16miles and my weekly mileage is way down, whereas this time last year I was well into the twenty milers and on quite high mileage.
I will post my long runs and weekly mileage from last year tommorow (its in work).
I can honestly say I cooked the long runs last year and perhaps peaked to early (Edale Skyline). From what I can remember I did take my longest runs upto the max 24miles and perhaps did 2 or 3 of these.
I planning on taking it a bit easier this year, perhaps going upto 20miles for longest run and getting a decent taper. Im also planning on cutting out the junk miles and perhaps running only 4-5 days per week.
Cheers
Jamie
I would be interested in having a recce up there before the race (mrs permitting), from say the playing field, up P and W to Hill Inn in race gear and with sis gels every 6 miles as per the other thread. Or the full course omitting P. Easy pace.
Anyone else up for this?
when we ran on sunday started at horton took the path through pub car park ,took track up to stile that picks up route from pen y ghent this folows race route throgh farm to ribblehead.up whernside down and up inglebrough and down to finish .... give me 18 miles ill take that ! will go up again mid march do something similar gets your legs used to it .took about three and half hours with food stops.
which pub car park did you go through, did you park at the car park near the cafe? did you just miss pen y ghent out or did the first bit of your route up to stile also miss a bit of the race route out? im interested as i need the longer training runs and dont always get the chance on a week to week basis, so im going to try and get up a few more times before the race.
from car park down over bridge turn right into pub up stoney path ,and yes miss out pen y ghent
Owmeknee et al,
I can make the following dates:
4 March - but i'll only be up to 18 miles max by then;
18 March - 20 miles is OK;
1st April - 20 miles is OK (but might be a bit slower due to hard race the weekend before).
Its 50 miles from here to the playing fields so I could get there for around 9:45 - 10 a.m..
If you have Google Earth, open the attached file and click on the attachment. It will load the 3 peaks course from last year. The exact course but missing the rught hand Pen-y-Ghent dog leg only saves 3 miles which took me 36 min last year. So that would be a bit long for a training run (21 miles or about 4.5 hours).
Any suggestions for something a couple of miles shorter?
Maybe cheat a bit on Ingleborough by not going all the way to the dibber station?
I'll be up for a trot up there ..can only do weekends tho
18 March - 20 miles is OK;
1st April - 20 miles is OK (but might be a bit slower due to hard race the weekend before).
there both weekends, so could def do 1st april, 18th depends as already suggested the 15th with paul h but could change it, wouldnt want to do it twice in one week tho!
busy both dates ,sorry, free on 25 march if thats any good...british summer time starts that day ???
Unfortunately I can't make 25/3.
Would 18th March be OK with Moo and Egor? Paul H is more than welcome as is anyone else (including the wider Radcliffe gang).
Do you have a fair idea of the route?
Went and did the same route as Owmeknee (Mr Finn) yesterday. Very wet, couldnt cross the river at the bottom of Whernside so had to skirt round to the farm to the left. Visibility was about 50ft going up Whernside, just enough to see my colleagues disappearing off into the mist ! Great run off though. Didnt bother going up to the summit of Ingleb' as rain was bouncing down and wind really strong. 20.1 miles according to the Garmin. Made me realise how much work I still have to do before the race ! Hills, hills and more hills !!!
im not 100% re route to be honest, somewhere between phen y ghent and nether lodge, i think as your suppose to cross the boggier section and keep alongside a wall, I got us lost.
Also I wasnt 100% sure of where to turn under viaduct at ribblehead and whether yous suppose to keep right at side of fence and then head stright up whernside, so go a bit lost there also.
And I also nearly missed the path coming off ingleborough bar some nice walkers pointing me in the right direction.
Do you have a Garmin 305?
I don't know why you're all so worried about the route. Unless you're planning to be at the front all you have to do is follow the leader.
I hope everyone intending to recce the course has read the following paragraph in the race information, particularly the sentence "at other times please keep to recognised paths".
Competitors are mostly free to choose their own route but in certain areas routes have been agreed to match agricultural and environmental needs, so where markers are provided, please follow them. These include the ascent and descent of Pen-y-Ghent, the route through Nether Lodge, the ascent of Whernside and the route across Ingleborough summit which are mandatory. The special arrangements we have made for the use of paths apply on race day only. At other times please keep to recognised paths. Follow the country code, keep dogs under control, use gates and stiles, do not alarm farm animals and take your litter home.
Have you posted my entry today, JJ
David,
Good point made with good intentions.
Reccies are really useful preparation. What I think would be useful is to publish some 3P recce routes that follow the course as closely as possible without treading on anyone's private turf.
E.g. playing fields > P > W on paths then Hill Inn.
That way folk can recce, as we will, and not abuse the hospitality shown to us on race day.
I will publish my recce and if anyone does theirs with a Garmin and description and send it to me I can publish theirs too.
this may help...

I would like to visit whernside and have a go at the 'east face'.
I see there is a 'recognised path' (black dotted line) that meets the public footpath that runs through from winterscales to ivescar farm. Do you think we can use this one David?
Which bit of the route is it we shouldnt use except on race day?
hows eveyones training going (or not)????
Started with Winter Hill (12m/2900'), then increased 2m each week to 14m, 16m, 18.4m, in hills, with easy week last week (propping up the back at XC nationals). Doing 20m in hills sunday in awful weather. Shins feeling a bit tender to the touch. Might do 2 peaks reccie Sunday after.
How about you egor?
trainings going so so, did another reccy with paulh and a couple of other blokes, but it didnt go well for me, was 1/2hr late so ended up catching the rest up as they were coming down pen y ghent and after that it got worse, didnt go up whernside as was knackered and sciatic nerve playing up so ended up running on rd to hill with plan of wiating for them to go up ingleborough, but ended up running back to car in horton, not a good day!
i might try and go up up again to do all or part of it if get time at beginning of april
Did a 25 mile reccie yesterday for the Allendale in mid April posing as a pseudo 3P practice. Down from Scotland for a 3P reccie on Sunday April 1 looking to start c 9.30am. Any other takers?
How's training going folks ?
Was out this morning hoping to do a 4 hr stint - did manage that time on my feet but must admit had to walk the last 45 mins as I was out on my feet - too darn hot.... I for one will be doing an Indian rain dance on the Saturday night ;)
Starting to get abit worried about taking this on now!!
Managed a few 3 hour odd runs and did the Tour of Pendle route last Sunday, with a few diversions....
Did nt feel too bad after, but, how does The 3 Peaks compare to the TOP?? apart from the extra few miles.. ;)
Hmmm. You may notice a subtle difference during the last 7 miles or so.
mmm.. thought so.. Oh joy! Ill just have to use "the Force" on the last bit then!!
