On a related theme does anybody remember women warbling (like Hilda Ogden) as they hung out the washing? Now that is a dead phenomenon.:(
Never mind whistling, some old chap behind me in Skipton Morrisons this evening suddenly did one of those "dee dah-do-de-dah" out of the blue excerps from (probably) a second world war Vera Lynn classic. Then he went silent for 3 or 4 minutes before doing exactly the same 5 note rendition over again.
Do you know, I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have known he was even doo-dar ing out loud :D

Reminds me of an old time-served joiner that I used to work with ( he retired 24 years ago ). He told the tale of being an apprentice back in the 1930's in Blackpool. They had a job in St. Annes ( v. posh ) and as they pushed the hand cart across the boundary from Blackpool into St. Annes, a St. Annes bobby wandered up, cuffed him around the earhole and reminded him that there was a local bylaw - tradesmen were not allowed to whistle in the street in St. Annes!!:eek: :(
