Hello Peeps !!
PLEASE BRING A CAGOULE !! It's blowing a hooly up there (that's why they built the windfarm!!) and the forecast is poor for Saturday.
11-30 Start, parking on the field at rear of pub, registration and prizes (and beer and food) inside the pub.
Please be there in plenty of time !!
I've flagged the fell section, then it's LEFT, along the rough bridleway (Sawood-White Moor Lane) and then LEFT, back along the minor road past Withens Clough resr & the windfarm to Withens Inn then LEFT and back down to reservoir to finish.
See you there ??
Decisions, Decisions! It was either the Hobble or the windmills and your smiling face won the day:)
I'm having a run. I won this race a year or three ago and so I'll be up for a good effort tomorrow.
I have run it in road racers and I've run it in Walshes. From what Stringman tells me it'll be Walshes tomorrow.
Well done Chris.
Congrats on the win, Chris;)
One quibble. The flier said windmills. I deliberately took my time ;) so I could spot them but saw not one! Very enjoyable despite this and good atmosphere in the pub afterwards.
My first proper race since pulling my calf muscle last November and very pleased I didn't fall on my face like usual.
Well done Chris.

Todmorden Harriers veteran Chris Smale made his intentions clear from the start and ran away from the rest to record yet another win at Ogden Water. He admits that he has a soft spot for this venue, the scene of his first ever fell race, Giant’s Tooth on New Year’s Day, a few years back. Chris powered away to win by over a minute. Pudsey’s Neil Armitage, who placed second, had to leave early, but kindly donated his prize to the raffle, the proceeds of which will go towards my friend Linda’s London Marathon fund-raising in aid of a local MS clinic. Third place went to Ilkley’s Jamie Hutchinson, while young Ben Crowther displayed tremendous potential in fourth, just ten seconds behind. Steven Fry of Bingley showed his improved form to take the over 40’s prize in sixth, while Todmorden’s Dave Collins picked up yet another well earned supervet’s award. Lisa Lacon of Holmfirth won the women’s section comfortably. Lisa actually holds the course record for this race but due to an oversight on my part, it wasn’t printed in this year’s fell fixtures calendar. Another great improver, Judy Howells of Wharfedale Harriers, placed second, while Todmorden’s Lynne Griffiths was delighted to learn that she’d finished as first veteran in third place as Nidd Valley’s Sue Morley won the over 50’s prize.
Bingley Harriers were clear winners in the team race, with Steven Fry, Steven Carney and James Senior taking the beer, while no club supplied three women necessary to make a team.
Thanks must go to all my friends who gave up their chance to run in order to help. Andy Clarke who helped me flag the route, Gaz Hodgkinson who swept round and gathered them back in, Linda and Dorothy on registration Peter and Graham on car parking and marshalling duties and Carole Fryer and David and Barbara on the finish.
As a result of this race, £100 was donated towards Linda Crabtree’s Marathon fundraising effort, and £100 was donated to Manorland’s hospice. Many thanks for coming and see you again soon.

2nd Lady:cool: Well done Daleside;)
Might be tempted by this next Saturday as not run it for a few years - anyone else planning on doing it?
If I've done this right, here is a map of the course.
For those without FRA membership who keep asking for this kind of info. (get a calendar and keep the FRA in business, I say!);
It's 11-30 start from Ogdenwater off A629 main Halifax - Keighley Road GR 064306 (O/S sheet 21 "South Pennines")
The route is approx 7 miles and it's approx half off-road (moorland path/ rough bridleway) and half on an old backroad, unsurfaced in places and quite steep to begin with.
In all it's a tough little race, with a long stoney bridleway descent, to finish by the reservoir.
Register on-the-day at the pub, (Causeway Foot Inn on main road).
Ample car parking on the field behind the pub,
Prizegiving / social / hot food in the pub afterwards.
BRING A CAGOULE!! It's always windy - hence the windfarm.
See you there!
AG
brill race -but unfortunatly dont think i can make it this year - despite getting a personal invite from the organiser last sat - was it free entry for me stringman you said...........???
unfortunatly got an appointment with 14miles of road - ugh
Doing this race hopefully, it is multi terrained with a long road section but in parts it will be very boggy, so fun and games! Nice little boozer is CauseyFoot so hopefully enjoy a pint or two at finish:)
I am up for this one, hope no V60 turn up then I can have a good run no matter what.:D
Its going to be wet and windy just in time for this one, looking forward to it:rolleyes:
Many thanks to Allan and his great team of helpers.
Really enjoyed my first race back for 4 months.
Now I need to get fit:eek:
Well done to all who took part;)
Well done to Chris Miller and Quentin Lewis who would have sorted out first and second between them but for some joker moving the arrow and flags the opposite way.
An apology from me because I should have known we'd gone the wrong way.
One of my favorite races and which has a lot of what is great about low key fell races.
Pretty peeved about this as I know the route well but just went along with the prank which I am must admit should have been obvious:o, sorry to all who followed. Well done to those who went the correct route and to whoever won you obv have more savvy than I;)
Oh dear Ogden, a poor weather prediction by yourself and then the wrong route on home soil.
I hope your having a fine evening Sir and enjoyed your run all the same.;)
do tell what happened?
Im guessing of a record field of 121 about the entire first quarter to a third turned right on to the road section (including myself despite having run it twice before). I did stop for a brief debate with the group I was in but opted to follow the crowd, which was a shame because they didnt and ended up in the top three! - (though in doing so ensured that everyone behind them followed suit...well done Mr Collins). I ran about half a mile the wrong way before the runners ahead started turning back so didnt go as far wrong as most. Im guessing the guys at the front went alot further than anyone, maybe over a mile, as they were still behind me at the finish, .
Anyway this was caused by some "hilarious" prankster not only turning the arrow sign to point right but removing and replanting about 20 flags to run down the road the other way (which is what convinced me the route had been changed). It must have frustrated the organiser more than anyone but couldnt detract from my enjoyment of this very down to earth and super friendly race.
If the front of the field went wrong, how did the middle and back of the field go the right way?????
I was in no mans land and still followed what the organiser had said about left left left and follow the arrows.
Still a testing little course and thanks again for a good morning out.:)
3rd race on the road back to fitness.
21st out of 122 runners?
Best result yet.
Now all i have to do is get a friendly moderator to delete previous posts on the thread and then everyone will accept the fact that i am in fact a speed demon....
I prefer to call it the scenic route. About 3/4 of a mile in the wrong direction up a hill.:o
This years races are not quite going to plan. First one I forget my fell shoes, second one I end up following the flags the wrong way? Dread to think what next?
Cheers to the organiser and marshalls. These things cannot be helped, still brilliant organisation.
Just to put things into some kind of perspective...
I try to run this race with the minimum of fuss and minimum of man-power (ie marshals etc) It has worked just fine since 2001.
Yes an arrow was broken and replanted the wrong way round where the bridleway (Sawood Lane) meets Cold Edge Road at a T junction, and THREE flags were moved (not 20), and placed over the next 5 yards only.
I hope whoever did that had a right good laugh - 2 hrs flagging up the spout.
[[ I would appreciate a volunteer to marshal there next year please ?? ]]
I cannot begin to tell you how sickened I felt when I heard that people had gone wrong. And a bit annoyed and very embarrassed.
However, see posts 7 and 18 on here, and I seem to remember there being a link to the map on my website. In addition to these posts, there were clear course maps on display at registration and I DID say LEFT more than once at the start, and EVERYONE heard me!
I believe I had done all I could to avoid this catastrophe short of having someone walk out onto the moor to steward the route.
The great thing about the event for me was the way every single runner appeared to take it all in good part and seemed to have a laugh about it. The banter at the prizegiving was excellent. Thankyou all.
Sorry for the slight delay in giving out the prizes as we had a runner unaccounted for. All ended well when this person turned up having retraced the flags to the start.
A donation will be split between Macmillan Nurses and Marie Curie.

Hi all
New to this site and to fell running. I have been road running for many years but thought i would give the windmills a go as nothing else on in the area i live,(DONCASTER) I run for askern drc.
As my first fell race i have to say what a great event, even after being in about 12th place and following other people for about a mile and ending up at the back of the race on our return to the correct route.
Many thanks to all the people who gave me advice on the day as to clothing to wear and the pace to go etc, i will be back next year now i know the course.
Many thanks pete.
Ok I think my memory may have added a few (17!) extra flags to try and justify the mistake I made in turning right. I had every reason not to turn right, having done it before, having heard the instructions (and nothing about a route change) and having checked the map at the start. Basically Im a lemming and when in doubt follow the crowd. Therefore the winner, in being the first person to choose the correct route fully deserves the prize.
Allan you did everything you could bar exctrating our human instinct to behave like sheep. I hope the fact that I and all others I spoke to still enjoyed the race, (in particualar hunting down slower friends), in someway makes up for your frustration.
Everybody took the unofficial change of route in good spirits. I turned right , knowing it was left , for about thirty seconds, then thought "sheep" and turned round as a result I managed second place. It will never happen again but I'm still pleased.:) I am just waiting for the results to be posted on-line so I can prove it to my friends:D
Many thanks to Alan an the team. My first time running this race. Really enjoyed it and for once was fortunate enough to be way back and took the right turn!
Well done to Dave Collins!
Does anyone know where the results can be found?
Thanks for those very heartening comments folks.
The results boards are here in the living room looking at me. As soon as I have typed them up, they will be on the results secton of the FRA WEBSITE.
Thanks again,
Allan G
