1/2 marathon time for marathon
Question for you folks:
As a rule of thumb, what kind of half marathon time does a sub-three marathoner run? Not in theory (I know the various 'times two plus 10 minuite' theories) but actually, in people's experience.
In particular, what about those that scraped under 3.00? WHat half marathon times were your churning out?
Thanks

Re: 1/2 marathon time for mara
Looking back at my log, in 2003 I did 3:00:34 at London. My previous half at the point was 1:25:32 and I was around that sort of time for my next couple of halfs. Lowered the half time to 1:22.26 in the autumn and followed that with a 2:55:42 at Rotterdam. So at that time I was pretty close to the x2 + 10 minutes.
Last year when I was coming back from injury I was at 1:24 for a half and 3:02 for a full, but hadn't been able to put in the long runs.
On my fastest times I'm closer to x2 + 8 minutes, but I do tend to train specifically for marathons and a half just comes off the back off whatever training I doing at the time.

Re: 1/2 marathon time for mara
Last spring I ran 1:22 hilly in Liverpool and 2:59 in London. I think before London I should have rested more, and also I did not push as hard as I could have.

Re: 1/2 marathon time for mara
Best marathon- 2.17.49
Best half marathon- 1.04.38
Therfeore 2 x 1.04.08 = 2.09.16 (How impressive would that be?)
2.17.49 - 2.09.16 = 8.33 difference

Re: 1/2 marathon time for mara
Really useful, thanks. Anymore out there?
My current pb is 1:26, set at Helsby a while back before doing the BGR. Hopefuilly i'm fitter and stronger now - the long runs appear to suggest so at the moment.
I'm doing the Lancaster Half 4 weeks before the Berlin marathon so perhaps I should aim for about 1:25?

Re: 1/2 marathon time for mara
Last year my best half was a smidge under 1:18 on a fast course.
I ran London Marathon 6 weeks later in 2:47 but I was predicting 2:43 - 2:44 given my training runs and 20 mile race times.
Personally, I would suggest if you can run a 1:25 HM and your preparation and taper are good then a sub 3 should be achievable - just don't under estimate the differences between a half and full - although I'm sure if you have completed the BG 3hrs will fly by!
Good luck

Gets some decent training in and get rid of that mental block you have.
You have everything going to run 2.10 so lets be seeing you in 2012.
YOU CAN DO IT. You just need some positive words of encouragement:)

Re: 1/2 marathon time for mara
I forgot about fell running in early 2002 and ran the following times - when it came to the marathon I ran far too slowly for the first 18 miles, thoroughly enjoyed blasting past hundreds of runners in the last eight and ended up feeling frustrated and not very weary at the finish!
19 03 02 Littleborough 5k 19.16
24 03 02 Wilmslow Half 1/2M 84.06
28 03 02 Salford 10k 38.21
02 04 02 Chester Spring 5m 31.32
14 04 02 London Marathon 202.41

Re: 1/2 marathon time for mara
My marathon PB (crikey almost 20 years ago now!!) was extremely close to the 2 x half + 10 mins formula - literally 1 second out:cool:
1/2 Mara pb 74.07 (1985) (1989 best 74.13)
London Mara 1989 2hrs 38mins 15secs.

Is this the new Maths? Was different in my day!:D

That's brilliant Swoop. Dedication or wot?
There's hope for me yet.

Re: 1/2 marathon time for mara
Thanks Swoop. It;'s the Lancaster Half this weekend and 3 weeks to Berlin so this should be a good pointer....
1:25 is the aim - which would be a pb for me. Hope the weather stays cool/cold and dries up

Get over to Berlin a week early and do a 10K. When I ran 2.52.14 in Frankfurt in 1995 I had done the Rőthenbach 10K in 36.09 the week before!

Re: 1/2 marathon time for mara
Flights already booked so alas that's not possible. However, i was toying with doing a 10k race the previous week as there's a local one on, but thought it might be a bad idea the week before the marathon. Evidently not based on your experience. Might give it a go....

Re: 1/2 marathon time for mara
So Swiss you are thinking of sub 3 after all eh? Just as I predicted quite some time ago.
TBH the double it and add 10 seems to be borne out in many of the posts above
Myself -
Half PB =1:13:30
Double it (2:27)
add 10 2:37
Marathon PB = 2:36:09
Aldi best in Berlin - if you see my mate (orange vest of Border Harr') and he's heading for beating my time then feel free to, errr, delay him a little.;)

Re: 1/2 marathon time for mara
Ran 1:23:04 and had to walk for about a minute with bad stitich at 7 miles. Sneaky feeling the course was a touch short, but the organiser said he paid to have it measured....
It's a pb so i'll take it!!! Felt like it was hard work with heavy legs from the start so hopefully a taper will have me really going well. I'm relearning that road running is so bloody intense, there's no hiding place once you start to tire. The mile marker splits tell all - mentally i find that really tough.
Pleased with run but not sure about sub 3 tho, will think on...

Re: 1/2 marathon time for mara
I prefer to use HM x 2.1 which is in line with times two plus 8 to 10 minutes for a three hour marathon runner. But I find it is more accurate for how you're running at the time, especially if sub three would be a bit of struggle given current fitness ;)
My best HM was set well before I stepped up to the marathon, but the last half I did before my PB of 2-38-40 was 73-52 which is a relatively poor + 11 minutes but I was aiming at 2-34 at the time and I think if anything I peaked too early with a 1-55 '20' in the build up (2-30 pace)
Anyway I'd say using my method a 3-00-00 marathon runner would look at 85-42 for a half as an equivalent run.

Mmm, that didn't paste as I expected, try:

Mods feel free to delete my attemp at posting a table!

Re: 1/2 marathon time for mara
Seems to hold up very well working from my mile pb of 4-33 most my pbs fall between the equivalents of 4-30 and 4-35 on the table.

slow for an athlete of your standard! you need Donna to give you a kick up the backside and get your arse in gear cos you can come in, in under 2.05!

Re: 1/2 marathon time for mara
Providing all the right pre race prep and race fluid intake ok
Then at the world elite end should be approx 2X +5 minutes
Where as a 2 hour half marathon runner should be approx 2X +10mins
So you should be aiming for sub 1h26 halfM, but in reality most runners don't get everything 100% right for a marathon so I feel that 1H25min should be nearer to your halfM target.

Re: 1/2 marathon time for mara
Right, how about this one I saw somewhere which converts 10k times to marathon but importantly the multiple of 10k depends on how many miles per week you are running. It also says that most people who use other typical conversion ratios will be slower than the marathon prdeicted time unless they are doing at least 60mpw
30-35mpw 5.5x
40mpw 5.0-5.3x
50mpw 4.9x
60mpw 4.8x
70mpw 4.75x
80mpw 4.65
100mpw 4.55x
This seems to make sense and should also be used to convert 1/2m times. You'd think someone running a 1.25 half on 80mpw is probably going to do better at a marathon than someone doing a 1.25 on 40mpw. Although the latter may be more talented the lower mileage is likely to be a handicap at 18 miles + in the marathon.
ps Swoop that might explain why your earlier marathon times weren't commensurate with your halves. Did you up your mileage in latter years?

Yes. I was doing 100 mpw towards the end.
