Looking for expert fellrunner
Hello the Times is looking for an expert fell runner to write a commentary piece to run alongside our coverage of the Lake distrcit fell run for tomorrow's paper
It would only be short- about 350 words- explaining why fell runners do what you do--despite the awful weather!
It would be good to hear from someone who thinks that it was the right thing to let the race go ahead-- and that as adults, it was up to the runners themselves to decide whether or not to take part.
If you drop me a line on [email protected] with your contact details and a few lines about you, and what you think, I'll give you a call.
It's always good to have a voice from those actually involved in the sport rather than just those commenting on it from outside.
thanks, much appreciated
Laura

Re: Looking for expert fellrun
I think you would do much better to write an article yourself extensively quoting the other thread on this same page. It might be a bit more work for you (I realise journalists aren't big on making an effort when it comes to presenting the facts objectively) but there are a lot of opinions and there is a fair amount of disagreement there, all written by "experienced fell runners." You have the raw material there to produce an interesting read that covers all aspects and perspectives related to the debate.

Me me me me meeee....
(oh - didn't see the 'expert' part......)

Re: Looking for expert fellrun
Bugger, I'm going to have to buy the Times tomorrow. (Could have been the Mail I suppose).
-
Re: Looking for expert fellrun
Splinter, the media need expert comment, why dont you give The Times a call?
-
Re: Looking for expert fellrun
I'd try and get hold of Shane Ohly, he's already commented about this elsewhere, was a competitor, and is used to journalism etc.
-
Re: Looking for expert fellrun
They only want to know about fell runners if they think something might go pear shaped.
TOUGH
Everyone accounted for.
No story
Just leave us alone!

Re: Looking for expert fellrun
I disagree with Stagger. This is good that the Times are running this. They could easily find quotes saying it's silly. Providing the space for the other side of the argument is welcomed IMO.

They will only report the negative side Iain, this is the english gutter press we are talking about.
Why don't they contact Richard Askwith?
-
Re: Looking for expert fellrun
I don't think they will, this is the Times. I expect they'll provide a report, some criticism and some supporting views.

I will live in hope then Iain and reserve judgment until I have read the article.

Re: Looking for expert fellrun
You need some one to comment with a considered opinion who is not a hot head other wise they just make it up and that won't help any one.
Shane is a good idea or Ron Howard from Sleep monsters who covers various adventure races, at least he's a jounalist on our side.

Re: Looking for expert fellrun
What gets me angry is people who have no experience of the sport coming out with stupid remarks like the knobs from wessex and lancaster, fair enough everyone is entitled to an opinion but at least come out with something constructive, fell running getting these headlines is not good, and anyway the OMM isn't really fell running anyway

Exactly.

Re: Looking for expert fellrun
F*** 'em!!! they were only interested in disaster stories and dissing the OMM organisers yesterday!
Let em write about the 2012 Olympics instead!

Re: Looking for expert fellrun
Laura - get yourself up to Edale (Peak District) next Sunday - there is a scaled down "mini" mountain marathon taking place (one day, no overnight camping, only out for 3 hours)
you will be welcomed with open arms, sorted out with kit and escorted round at your own pace :)

A balanced article - well done Laura.
We might not like Mark Weir's comments, but reporters are bound to report them and he did provide practical help.

Re: Looking for expert fellrun
bloody media, they have their hobby horses, one minute its boxing, lets ban it, it's barbaric etc etc. Then, when they are bored, it's onto the next thing. The OMM publicity will settle down soon enough, and i think that it may well have even raised the profile of fell running and MM!
There will be something new soon, i view media attention as a child's attention span to that new christmas toy, great for a few days, then fed up with it, sling it aside and play with the box it came in (or not) or just forget it alltogether:rolleyes:
Lets ban media reports on something they know eff all about!

Good for wraping Fish & Chips
and
Stuffing in the wet soggy fell shoes to help them dry
but thats about the only use for it.

It's great though innit - because we are THE NEXT BIG THING! :D
