Skiddaw Race
I know it's months away, but I was looking through the FRA calendar and saw that against Skiddaw they have ER (experience required), LK (local knowledge) and NS (navigational skills). I've walked it and so I know it's a tough climb and i know you can lose your bearings on any fell with the slightest drop of mist, but isn't the route up and down Jenkin Hill fairly straight forward, relatively speaking!

Re: Skiddaw Race
You'd have to be trying VERY hard to get lost on this one .

That's what I was thinking. It's confusing if, like me, you're not overly familiar with the routes of various races and use the info in the calendar as a guide. Borrowdale has the same ER, NS, LK info but is obviously a totally different kettle of fish, with several check points, navigation to be done and a real chance of getting lost if the weather turns.

My missus went the wrong way at the fork in the forest tracks around latrigg on the way down. She ended up finishing second to last and wouldn;t speak to me for an hour afterwards because I laughed so much.
One cream tea later and she saw the funny side...

Re: Skiddaw Race
Ah yes, Swiss Toni....the one place it IS possible to go wrong. I almost took that wrong turn and, from being about a minute ahead of the person behind me, had to catch him up again!!
So, Jimmyboy, the answer is....no navigation issues on the hill itself...but some down in the "foothills"

That explains it. When I walked it I was lazy and parked up at the car park between Latrigg and Jenkin Hill thus missing the dreaded woods. If I do make the race I'll make sure I follow the right person!
Thanks for the advice folks

Skiddaw - Sunday July 1st
This race is on the first day I'm back home after my hol's
so no chance for a recce. However, Skiddaw is the fell I go up most often (as it's quite close) so there should be no prob's.
Presume it goes straight up the 'tourist route' via Latrigg etc? Anyone done it previously?
-
Re: Skiddaw - Sunday July 1st
tourist route yes I think, they bring back down mostly on the same path but theres about 1km on a nasty camber, thats most of my memories of it - apart from the toe blisters and a few people fell over producing lots of blood.
-
Re: Skiddaw - Sunday July 1st
Out of the back of Fitz Park, right along the road for a couple of hundred yards then left up the main track towards Latrigg. Stay on the track skirting round to the left of Latrigg up to the car park then the main tourist path up to the top. Back the same way. Pretty horrible running most of the way on the "improved" paths in my opinion. If you want to have a go at a straight up and down race then Glaramara the following Sunday is a much nicer course.

ok this is the best i can do without geek assistance!

Re: Skiddaw - Sunday July 1st
Isn't that a slightly complicated way of saying run straight up and straight down again....?
The route has a rather nice view of the central fells on the way down, if you don't mind falling over while looking at it, but other than that I can't see the attraction....
Oh, and you'd be best off making a PDF of it....

As you saved it as a jpeg, winzippig it won't do much as a jpeg is already compressed. What you need to do is use some software such as Irfanview to resize it first. Irfanview is probably the most useful piece of free software I ever came across and I've been using it as long as I can remember.
Open up your scanned image in Irfanview and go to Image>Resize/Resample from the menu at the top. You will get a new window with various boxes and numbers. In the "Set new size" boxes, put something like Width=1000 and make sure "pixels" and "Perserve aspect ratio" are selected underneath. Change the "DPI:" to 72 and hit OK. If the image looks a bit blurred, then go to Image>Sharpen. Once you are happy go to File>Save As and select desktop from the "Save in:" dropdown box at the top. Give it a name and make sure the "Save as Type" box is showing JPG at the bottom. In the Jpeg/Gif save options box at the side, untick everything and set the slider to 80%. Select save. That should do it.

Re: Skiddaw - Sunday July 1st
I can't believe all this faffing about for a map of this race. The only navigational problem is getting out of Fitz Park .

No faffing involved at all!

Re: Skiddaw - Sunday July 1st
thats an extremely useful map dominion thank you very much for sourcing it and posting it - you see I was going to take that special alternative route part of the way up but now that i see you have to stick to the path - i shall rethink my race strategy........... :D :D :D
Thanks for your help jimbob - i'm not very computer literate and became confused at your very helpful instructions (as they were more than one line long!)

So are you allowed the BG dodge over the corner and gate before the latrigg car park?

That shortcut had never occurred to me before last week when I saw Yiannis, Steve Cliff & their team disappear up there.
-
Re: Skiddaw - Sunday July 1st
Oh dear - what have i started! I was just joking about the short cut - i was just trying to show some appreciation for the map that David said was pointless but I had gone to great lengths to get on here
i'd better keep me mouth shut next time.

You're most welcome DS! Just don't shoot the messenger if the map that I sourced and published at great cost and effort sends you off course... ;) Personally I'd go with Bill. Straight up, shortest route.
I take it the path is surfaced with non-slip tarmac and handrails to help me??
-
Re: Skiddaw - Sunday July 1st
Well I think we all followed the organisers instructions not to shortcut and to follow the short flagged section off Jenkin Hill. Commiserations to the guy who fell just behind me but well done to the other runner who saw the fall and stopped to help (throwing his own race), and the CFR runner who carried on to raise the alarm for St Johns Ambulance. I gather the marshal team got to the runner first and got him straight into A&E for treatment.
Congrats to the winner on his first ever fell race - 2 mins lead at the summit cut to 8 seconds at the finish. Excellent tea and cakes afterwards, oh and a good run by Marrow despite last nights late drinking. Any blisters anyone?
-
Re: Skiddaw - Sunday July 1st
damn, did I miss Marrow again!!
I wanted to give you all a cheer at the top ( I've been ill - cant run up hill) - I got three quarters of the way up ullock pike en route and had to sit down, rest then turned back.
any results?
-
Re: Skiddaw - Sunday July 1st
Couldn't get a pass out for Sunday, so sneaked out Saturday afternoon and did it on my own. Now I know what straight up and down means.

Re: Skiddaw - Sunday July 1st
Pictures are up:

Have not seen the results yet though.
I hope the bloke who fell was ok, he looked to have taken a nasty knock on the head when I saw him.
