Does anyone have reasonably accurate distance and ascent for Kinder Downfall?
Thanks
Distance from last years race was 15.64km although I did manage to trail a Buxton runner who knew all of the short-cuts. I did log the ascent from my Suunto but can't find it anywhere... seem to remember it was about 1700ft
I measured 1950ft on a Suunto.
Garmin 305 gave 9.8 miles which agrees with nikalas' 15.64K.
Gave climb as 2820' but Sport Tracks "smoothed" this down to 2040'.
Have you been to the Hayfield races website.
Can post a link or just google it for the course profile (9.6mi, 1971ft).
Is this race full yet? (Someone might know without innundating Mr soles with emails)

This is as at mid Feb
entry list on Hayfield site just updated (5th March) - nearly 100 entrants already
including ME! :D
Have just entered the kinder downfall (hopefully). Is this a race where previous reccying is advisable?, or is the route 'relatively' easy to follow?
any advice would be welcome.
thanks
I did it with a friend 2 years ago with the aim of getting her round and we were right at the back (literally!).....managed ok and didn't get lost although it WAS a lovely day and you could see quite clearly ahead. To be honest I did keep running ahead when people got out of view just to check which way they had gone then ran back again...I'm sure you'll be fine though
The last section was marshalled and flagged too.
There were some behind you Emma!Attachment 1865
ahh but that was THEN.......! a few miles further up and we weren't so lucky! :D
someone followed my straying on the Kinder Trog last year - I was only nipping into a grough for a pee.
Having said that, there's a few groughs which will cut off the odd corner but it's a only a minute here and there. If you start running too fast after a Pennine vest they make take fright and think you're after their jelly babies. Creep up on them very slowly and offer them some beer from your water bottle in return for LK :D
The route is easy to follow IF there is no fog. The last third of the route over Kinder Low can be strangely deceptive in low cloud. I must have been around that course about 10 times, and I still get lost there. I think a recce would be wise, and if the mist decends in the last third, keep heading south.
Yes, fine in clear viz but difficult over the top in fog.
Last year due to erosion the difficult bit was fully flagged so it was very easy, but I assume that won't be the case this year.
I'd definitely reccie.
filling up fast this one
I think a lot of clubs have it in their champs this year
after a half-decent trot at Ras yr Aran, I'm now getting quite optimistic of knocking a couple of minutes off my Downfall time of last year... :D
it's in the calendar Amex
I don't think the organiser wants his details to appear on the website (which is his prerogative of course)
I don't have my calendar with me, but somebody who has could PM you if you're in a hurry!
have you done the Downfall before? if not, you're in for a treat! ;)
Daves Email is here on the Hayfield site
Anyone know if it is going to be flagged round Kinder Low again this year?
There is information about a route change http://www.cs.man.ac.uk/~temples/hc/
What is the date?
Excellent new route!
That looks like the route I normally take, anyway.
Sorry, didn't read that bit.:o
Good to see the rope was in place but I didn't need it.:)
