He's obviously a fan. Would need to give them a try before committing myself.
Haha to early in the morning for that thread title!
Better start by saying that these are probably not ideal shoes for fell running.
I've had a pair of these for a couple of months. I'm using them to strengthen my feet as I get PF and I've got a mildly arthritic toe. I've done 3 or 4 70 min fell runs in them. They're a bit sketchy on steep grass and steep mud and a bit sore descending on sharp stones, so foot placements is more key than usual. Otherwise great fun and I've done some fast times on my usual route.
No cushioning and definitely worth getting used to them round the house first, then short runs outside. I didn’t do any of that, then wore them on a 2 ½ fhour fell run second time out and my legs and foot tendons were really sore for about 10 days after. Serious case of overdoing it!
Read the stuff online about sizing as this is crucial and easy to get wrong.
I bought some (the KSO version) a few months ago but have not run in them (still winter here until recently). There are numerous reports/reviews on the Pose forums and as someone else posted, on various blogs (go to vibram fivefingers webpage for links to other blogs). Barefoot Ted is another blog with extensive reviews.
My view - they are comfortable and work very well for working out - strength training. Not barefoot, but much more so than any shoe. The big benefit for me is greater stability / balance than any shoes. I'm going to try them for running when the trails dry out some.
Am i the only one who at a first glance every time this thread pops up....i read it as "vibrating fingers"
I'm def going to try these out as soon as I've got spare cash (lets face it they are a tad pricey) I'm wondering if it would not be out of the realms of possibility for a walsh style re-sole? We may then have the ultimate fell shoe on our hands (or feet) :)
Try ebay or TK Maxx.
As for the Walsh sole, think you might be dealing with pressure points hurting your feet.
Not too worried about it really, more of an idea, but I would love to give them a go for trail running as I am trying to do one barefoot seesion a week, tarmac is fine as is grass, but sharp stoney trails are taking a bit of getting used to! I think you are probably right about the pressure points though.
I like the idea of these but the UK prices are ridiculous - interesting to note that in the States they are only 75 to 90 DOLLARS rather than ££££s
My wife just came in, took one look at a photo of the Fivefingers, announced flatly "You're not getting any of those", and left the room.
So I'm not getting any of those.
Who'll be the first person to have the bottle to wear them in a race? 50 Big Chief I-Spy points for the first sighting!
Just seen this on a review website:
I tried on a pair yesterday! Size 41 KSO’s in black! I LOVED them! I texted my wife and she said “gross” and “don’t even think about it”. To keep the peace I decided to go home and talk to her about it, and quite frankly, i don’t care, I’m getting them.
Good luck, Stephen in California. I hope you'll enjoy being single again. :D
They'd be a bit of a conversation starter at the start of races wouldn't they?
I've actually been after a pair of the KSO's ever since Matt Fitzgerald mentioned it in his book brain training for runners. Was thinking of running Snowdon in them but having read this review:
http://redrocksbluesky.wordpress.com...e-finger-ksos/
I'm not sure the soles would survive the descent of cloggy. What does everyone else think?
Barefoot is a better conversation starter in my opinion. Anyway I am interested to know what you read in my review at redrocksbluesky that would cause you to feel like the soles would fail in your fabulous terrain.
Regards, and hope to fly across the pond and run a few fell events.

hopefully to be redrocksbluesky.com by the end of today...
What WILL Danbert say when he sees these slippers?

He was a very good climber/descender
Hi Michael,
My mistake - it was the uppers that I was concerned about after reading your review - I hate sewing!
I'm sure I read somewhere though a review from someone who was not sure that the thin soles would still protect their feet if they landed on a sharp rock.?
Having said that, I love the idea of barefoot running, and all of the reviews I've read praises the Five Fingers. Guess there's only one way to find out if they'll hold out on Snowdon...
I'm def, def, thinking about these at the moment and here is why... Run very hilly + traily 10 miles yesterday (in roclite 310's) felt a bit sluggish at the start but chirped up at about 3 miles ran okay for rest. On the last stretch I decided to go barefoot - put my shoes in backpack (inov8 12 are absolutely brilliant at carrying a pair of shoes BTW!) and it was like someone had just screwed on a new pair of feet and legs - instant revival - I flew up the first hill, cruised along the flat then glidded up the next bit of hill before emerging out of the woods and back to civilisation all in all the best mile of the run! Now here's my point, I was caught out by a load of posh walkers who must have thought I was up to no good putting my shoes on at the bottom of the trail, no direct comments but you could tell that they were thinking - who's that barefooted freak. Well with a pair of ff's I'd be able to run barefoot, and look at least a little less like a freak. win win.
Oh and one more thing - these are cheeper, possibly better. http://www.feelmax.com/
Just read a good review on Barefoot ted's website. Check that out too.
Anyone thinking this is not for me and I need at least 2 inches of cusioning for my feet, I would suggest you read what's probably the best running book ever written - "Born to Run" by Christopher Mcdougall. I've almost got through it and have just read the bit about modern running shoes and the rise of modern running injuries and it really makes you wonder that perhaps everything modern running shoe companies are telling us we need is a bit like a load of bullsh#t! :)
Just found this on t'net...

Pretty cool.
I'm seriously thinking about getting some as I've recently finished off a few of my runs barefoot.
The feeling is very liberating, I ran on a mix of trail, mud, grass and asphalt for about 2miles. All felt very natural and nowhere near as harsh and impactful as you would think. The only stuff that was painful is gravelly road tracks ouch!!
I've been trying to find a stockist of FiveFingers in the UK to try some on but its been a bit of a nightmare. I think I'm going to get some aquashoes http://www.barefootrunner.com/2009/0...teraqua-shoes/ to start off with and maybe spend the money on some VFF later.
Have found this website http://www.lovethoseshoes.com/search...ers&StartID=10
They are in the UK, you have to pay the usual $ to £ hike but at least if they are the wrong size its easier to send back. I might go this route to start with and if I get on with them get the 2nd from the US.

I'm hoping to do part of my run tomorrow in some aqua shoes I've got (which I use for kayaking). I've already worn them on the road and they were fine (though they're not that breathable)
It looks as though Inov8 may soon go out of business with all these fell runners running barefoot or in aquashoes/five fingers/etc!

I havnt seen "Vibram 5 Fingers" in many retailers where you can actually try them on .
NAKED APE-SHEFFIELD have a good range.

Just bought 2 pairs of these from a local sports shop for £10 each - found them online for £4 as well!!.

Once you take the inner sole out they are very light and flexible, but don't think they will be mega breathable. They do have a bit of mesh though. I gave them a little go and they felt great. Will try them out for a couple of miles over the next few days.
Right. Took the plunge and ordered some five fingers last night, will post on here my experiences. Quite excited now :)
Which ones did you go for?
Looking at them I think the only ones I could wear without any form of embarrasment is the KSO in black!
Really interested to see how you get on.
Gone for KSO in taupe (?) I measured my feet in inches with a stanley fatmax tape heels against the wall and followed the guidelines on the vibram five fingers website to convert the measurement. Only time will tell if they are the right size, but should be no problem to return if they're not.
I read Born to Run last week and felt like I'd been whacked over the head with a plank of wood re the crapness of built up running shoes. I have since tried 2 x 10 minute runs on a treadmill in just socks. To be honest it hurt like hell (ankles & calves) but I am keen to try it out in full so drove to Sheffield today to buy some Five Fingers KSO (from Naked Ape).
I followed the sizing guide on the USA website and thought I'd need a 39 or 40. The 39 was a tiny bit tight on the right toes so I got the 40 and have been wearing them around the house for a few hours. They are dead comfy and I'm suprised by how little I notice having my toes separated.
I'll try a short run outside in them tomorrow and I hope they prove worth the money (£80!). Incidentally, the shop assistant in Naked Ape was very knowledgable about fit etc as he wears them himself. He reckons they are selling like hot cakes and every spare inch of the shop was stacked with boxes of them so I believe him. Haven't ever seen anyone wearing them though and also wouldn't dare show up at running club in mine.
Hi Dru, what size shoe are you normally, I have used the "sizing guide" on the website and the size suggests a 39 for FF's, I usually take a UK size 8 ...
