Midsummer Madness this Fri
There's already a thread about "Reservoir Bogs", but I thought it worth flagging up this magnificent three day event near Hebden Bridge.
Friday - Wicken Hill Whizz 3 mile AS
Saturday - Reserviour Bogs navigation race
Sunday - Tom Tittiman
I'm staying over the entire weekend as I had so much fun here last year...

Re: Midsummer Madness this Fri
Where are you staying? 11 of us are staying at BillJ's pad. The rest of us will be dotted around Hebden Bridge, but we will spend most of our time in the Hare & Hounds
-
Re: Midsummer Madness this Fri
Hi Invisible,
Got a last minute room over at the Robin Hood, but I'll too be hanging around the Hare and Hounds for the beer. See you there!
Rich.

Re: Midsummer Madness this Fri
As per other thread I'll just be up for Friday.
-
Re: Midsummer Madness this Fri
I'll be propping up the back of the Tom Tittiman on Sunday - hope to do them all next year when fitness gradually improves.
Is this the best name for a race ever, or what???:D :D
-
Re: Midsummer Madness this Fri
Full title is the Timothy Taylors Tom Tittiman

Though I've been assured that I'll hardly notice that Invisible is there. ;)

Re: Midsummer Madness this Fri
Say hello if you see me (anyone) - I'm the lanky, miserable looking one with dark hair. Probably be wearing an orange Amsterdam shirt.

Re: Midsummer Madness this Fri
Went up to support Mrs Stagger.
I stood half way up the cow field but never saw invisible either going up or down.
-
Re: Midsummer Madness this Fri
I didn't see Invisible either.....
Didn't quite dare to approach the Springfield contingent and ask "Which one of you is Invisible?" in case they thought I was completely crazy.

Oh, and Mrs Stagger said you'd disappeared from the cow field yourself. She was last seen wandering about searching for you. So maybe invisibility is contagious.

Re: Midsummer Madness this Fri
Well done to Alex Whittem (Todmorden) for winning the Wicken Hill Whizz, and Holly Page (Halifax) for first lady.
But neither can do the full series, so the series leader after one race is Andy Thorpe of Halifax Harriers, and the leading lady is Anna Verges of Trafford AC.
Race results and current series standings on the cvfr website: here.
-
Re: Midsummer Madness this Fri
James Logue of Horwich RMI won Saturday's Reservoir Bogs, which offered a variety of route choices!, and Stainland Lion's Gayle Benson was first lady.
Andy Thorpe's first place today keeps him in the lead overall in the series, while Jackie Scarf of Calder Valley has now gone into the series lead amongst the ladies.
Results so far up on the cvfr website (link below).
Cheers, Bill :)

Re: Midsummer Madness this Fri
Bill
Why isn't Claire Hanson showing in the overall ladies results?
In front of Linda Murgatroyd in both races!
-
Re: Midsummer Madness this Fri
Today looked an excellent course Bill.
Mrs Staggers Garmin clocked her at 7.5 miles with 1450 feet of ascent.
See is quite and recovering for tomorrow so well done Bill on your choice for today.
I'm just enjoying a couple of beers in my new found silence.:) :) :)

Tis true Epocian, I have just checked and you are quite correct.
Come on now Bill don't let all the praise go to your head.:o

Ah alas, its because Claire can't race tomorrow, so she's not in the series.
Since we need so many marshalls to cover the 3 days, with the kids races as well, we've got a policy in CVFR that anyone can marshall one race and run the other two, or they can marshall 2 races one year and then compete in all three next year.
So unless Claire can find a friend to stand in for her, she's going to be doing registration and helping at the finish tomorrow. She says she's even offered free beer but had no takers. :(
I know, I'm a hard task-master. :o
I'm glad Mrs Stagger enjoyed the course - or perhaps will when she recovers her strength!
-
Re: Midsummer Madness this Fri
Well, a great three days, as predicted.
Many thanks to Bill and every one else involved. A three day event is such a great idea, pity there aren't more of them - and the three races complement each other so well.
Always cheers me up to see the Springfield Striders raiding party coming all the way from Essex and having a great time. Hope the knee's ok Invisible!
Sorry to Tussockface - I repaid his kindness in getting me through some navigation nightmares by bashing the back of his car this morning :( - PM if it turns out there was any damage (I really, really, should not be allowed behind the wheel). Either way, I owe you a few beers!
A pity about the timeout on the Reservoir Bogs - I was the last to record a time and I know some of those timed out were upset about it. Not a criticism though - I know that the marshalls can't be out all day. I'd better get fit by next year to ensure I avoid the drop :)
I had to dash off before the results of the Tittiman so I missed the fall out - I understand some went the wrong way - anyone know what happened?
Great stuff, can't wait for next year.

Re: Midsummer Madness this Fri
Glad you enjoyed it, Rich.
Missing cut-off times is always an emotive issue, and it certainly led to some disgruntled folk. :(
The cut-off times were not a disqualification, instead they were a sort-of short course - for the 7 people who got to checkpoint 5 after the cut-off time, their race position was based on the time they got to that checkpoint, and it was intended that that was their finish line.
But for next year, on the suggestion of the Springfield Striders, I intend to have an early start option, so anyone who thinks they may not get inside the cut-off time can start, say 45 minutes earlier than the rest of the runners. How does that sound?
It does of course mean that they'll be navigating from the front and laying down the studmarks for others to follow!
And then I didn't get an easy ride on Sunday either, with 14 people in a bunch taking an inadvertent short-cut. That's the thing - once someone at the front of a bunch goes the wrong way the folk behind are just going to follow along. It sounds as though several of our flags may have been removed or flattened (despite being put out only a couple of hours before the race).
But it always impresses me the honesty of fell-folk. We're competitive within ourselves but hardly any of us look for an unfair advantage. All the people who'd taken the shortcut came to me at the end to say they had. I added 2 minutes to their times, which I worked out as about right based on the time they gained.
See you next year! :)
PS: all results, including checkpoint/summit positions now on the CVFR website.
Well done to Andy Thorpe and Jackie Scarf for holding onto their leading places in the series.

Sounds like a good idea. I wondered why a couple of the flags were flat on the ground - I tried to stick one back in the ground because the guy behind me was a fair way behind and I was worried he might go wrong - but I only ended up snapping the pole (sorry about that - I owe you a pole!)

Don't go bringing Illegal immigrants to sweeten Bill up, that will not work Rich.
Mrs Stagger was a culprit of taking the shorter route. Her defence is she was following some blokes, I explained where that could lead her.
Tut tut tut following instead of studing the course details.
Well done Bill another excellent series.
Thanks from all at Stainland Lions. :)

Re: Midsummer Madness this Fri
Thanks to Bill for some excellent races, Just finished drinking Mrs M's prize from Friday (very nice wine!). I was working Saturday so could not do that race. Hopefully back next year for full series with some more of the Radcliffe crew.
-
Re: Midsummer Madness this Fri
Stagger, I was discussing route choices near the end of Reservoir Bogs with Mrs Stagger, seems she took the right option and I took the wrong one
Enjoyed the series though ! Well done Bill:D

Re: Midsummer Madness this Fri
Thanks Bill and your 49 helpers from all at Springfield. I made a point of thanking all the marshals that I recognised as top runners giving up their time for a plodder like me. It's what fell running is all about. Thanks for the spot prize too.
You already know we'll be back next year.
PS I thought it was the best Reservoir Bogs race ever, quite a bit tougher than before, great stuff.
My knee is fine thank you RichK.

It was the Tom Tittiman where she was given time penalties Rhino, her and a few others could not get Saturday out of their system and appeared to still be on the direct route policy.
Bill sorted them out as honesty kicked in and they all came forward to admit the error.:o

Re: Midsummer Madness this Fri
Thank you Bill and your army of helpers for organising the 3 day series, I really enjoyed it. On paper it looked reasonable, mileage wise, but in reality it was quite tough, my legs were very heavy by Sunday. It's Stagger's turn to do it next year!

I think I helped get you into at least one of the navigation nightmares to begin with! I'm sure we shouldn't have gone tumbling down that gully full of bracken; it certainly didn't feature in my race plan.
The car seems fine. It's the rain pouring through my lounge ceiling that's the current worry, but I can't blame you for that.
Would never refuse an offer of beer, though...
It was good to meet up with a few other forumites too, such as Stagger and Mrs Stagger, and Invisible, who finally materialised. Turned out I'd actually been talking to him without realising it. Now That's What I Call Invisible (vol.43).
Thanks to Bill for another fine series and a splendidly wicked Bogs route.

Midsummer Madness
Any forumites planning to do all 3 races next weekend?
We've got some excellent engraved glasses as mementos for those who do complete all 3.
In the 5 years that I've done the results, we've had a different overall winner and a different ladies winner each year. It'll be interesting to see if there will be new names again this year or a repeat winner.
(winner / 1st lady / 1st vet):
2003: Adam Breaks / Anne Johnson / Philip Taylor
2004: Karl Gray / Carole Waterhouse / Chris Smale
2005: Chris Smale / Jo Smith / Chris Smale
2006: James Logue / Sandy Grimes / Chris Smale
2007: Andy Thorpe / Jackie Scarf / Dick Ballantyne
:)

Re: Midsummer Madness
I might have a go, Bill. I qualify after last year's marshalling duties, though if you're desperate for help on any of the races let me know and I might be prepared to forgo the pleasure.
-
Re: Midsummer Madness
Nope, Stagger will be up for all 3 Bill.;)
Its a great weekend of running.:)
Thanks for the tips on the navigation route:D I got lost last year and incurred added time.

Re: Midsummer Madness
Be good to see all of you there then.
We're fine for marshals, Tussockface, so race away!
RichK - are you staying in the Robin Hood again? Was it good?
-
Re: Midsummer Madness
Hi Bill,
Yep, the Robin Hood is just fine, easy to walk to the starts on Saturday and Sunday.
Only problem is getting to the beers at the Hare and Hounds on Saturday night - last year I decided to have a short kip after the Bogs race and ended up waking up on Sunday morning. Just in time for yet another flipping fell race! I'm a bit fitter this year...
See you there!

Re: Midsummer Madness
At the top of the woods there is a kissing gate where a queue forms and others jump the fence.
Is jumping the fence acceptable?

What sort of fence is it? You shouldn't cross a picket!
-
Re: Midsummer Madness
Stagger.
I thought it was my job to jump "fences".
Thanks for the warm up run this evening. Just set me up for a wander up that Wicked Hill (sorry Wicken Hill)

That gate is going to be removed, so hopefully there shouldn't be a queue forming.
Even so, the fence on the left of the gate is low enough to step over and I don't have any objection to anyone going over it. :)
