Here we go, the big question - does God exist?
My opinion - of course there's a God. Not a bearded Joss Naylor-like figure in a big chair wrapped in a sheet but definitely some higher-power creator / destroyer force ;)

Tugay is God
over to you, CL.
Bloody hell (sorry, heck;)) DT: it's only 12.10 on a Tues afternoon. Bit early for this question isn't it? Not been necking any beers for breakfast have you?
I'm agnostic (http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/g...id=24876151642), but not sure this isn't just a cop out.
I have been getting more interested in Buddhism in recent years.
Enjoyed Dawkins polemic. Made up for the gap left after trying to rid myself of a lifetime of brainwashing...coz that's what organised religion is. However, we do need something but I'm not sure what. Considering taking up Jedi knighthood!;)
The Universe IS everything, so there can't be anything on the other side of it.
Is there an end to the universe? Of course because the universe is finite. If it wasn't it would be undefinable, and we couldn't then call it the universe.
Just asked God so I know.
Richard Dawkins does not exist.
Isn't it true that the point is we CAN'T define the universe - we don't know if it is finite or infinite and we don't know if there is one or many?
Oh how exciting.... this brings all sorts of happy memories back of Finals.
For me, for something to exist is has to be proven to exist. Also, not being able to disprove something does not prove it's existence. This is a classic weak argument of many believers, eg "science cannot disprove the existence of god so therefore god exists"... I could start my own religion worshipping an almighty celestial hamster and could put forward the very same argument for its existence with equal validity ie. not much.
A lot of Richard Dawkin's work is excellent but I don't think the God Delusion is his strongest. He comes across in it as being too zealous rather than relying on hard science and sound philosophical argument. I prefer Selfish Gene, Blind Watchmaker and, more recently, The Ancestors Tale.
Excellent read is Bertrand Russell's Why I'm not a Christian.
Let the fun begin!
If there is a god, I must have seriously pissed him off today!!
good stuff CL but surely you are just playing with words, If something is Finite it has to have an end or at least boundaries, if it has these there must be "something" on the other side. The word universe is just a word not a true definition as we don't know our universe is everything:confused:
I'd like to add I don't know the answer and I'm not on either side of the fence but just love to discuss this one.
Much harder to prove than is there life out side our solar system
I do not believe that there is a God.
I believe that even if there was one, he would not expect us to worship on a regular basis - he'd surely just expect us to get on with life as best we can.
I do not need conclusive proof either way - I look at the evidence and form my own opinion.
For them that believe, good luck to them - but I would suggest that if they could ever get free access to the Vatican they may find facts that undermine the whole Christian faith - and therefore perhaps other faiths as well.
I firmly believe that Religion is a method of population control by small groups with vested interests.
Brainwashing.
Mads and WP make it 2-2. Are we doing first to 5 wins? Then we can go back to really crucial stuff like is it okay to put pineapple on a pizza? :) I don't mean to sound too flip btw and upset any yes voters
I think infinity is more like a Mobius loop so the middle is every where as there is no end?
The explanation of infinity I always liked was the one where you have an infinite hotel with an infinite amount of rooms. You can then accommodate any number of guests and still have plenty of space for more arrivals
My initial thought was an infinite fellrace would be great (infinite amount of prizes, infinite choice of beer at the infinite bar etc) but then I realised you could end up infinitely lost (no change there then!) and you'd never get to the end! :(
Well I agree it is a method of control. The question is, is the control necessary? Maybe not for those who dwell long enough on things to work them out in a pragmatic and humanistic way. But what about those who don't? Those who don't give a rats ass about any kind of organised anything?
Isn't Dawkins a VERIFICATIONIST - he holds a "scientific mindset" which rejects anything not empirically verifiable. Problem is that tends to make everything a bit dull and boring: it's all the things that can't be verified that give life meaning. Perhaps Albert Einstein put it better:
"The fairest thing we can experince is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion which stands at the cradle of true art and science. He who knows it not and can no longer wonder, no longer feel amazement, is as good as dead, a snuffed out candle"
Not for me he doesn't - good luck to the believers.
If God did exist, wouldn't he have got round to sorting out all those cheats who don't carry the compulsory kit in races?
Science is a point of view.
