Feet in the clouds - The film?
While flipping through the local whats on guide, I noticed an article advertising Joss's book - nothing unusual about that, However there was also an interesting reference to a new film currently in production about fell running, built around the book Feet in the clouds. Apparently both Joss and Pete Bland both get appearances.
Anyone else heard about this, or was the writer of the article just getting carried away?

Re: Feet in the clouds - The f
I don't know what the state of play is with this now but the idea was banded about over 18 months ago to turn it into a film. A while back I had some tea with a well known top notch ex-champion legend of a runner who told me that he was approached by some guy who asked if he could bring this actor to get some ideas and tips in order to play him in the film (presumably he would be filmed running over the fells).
This runner said "well you'll have to come when the weather is really bad or otherwise i need to get on with me work!!
Apparently, they didn't bother coming.
If you ask me, this would be the death of fell running as we used to know it when we were all from an outdoors/mountaineering background and race fields were small. It will glamourise it too much.

I'm sure I heard someone come back from the Bob Graham meal mention it as well.

London based film-maker Kate Sinclair is in Berlin shopping Feet In The Clouds a screenplay, which she wrote, based on the award winning novel of the same name by journalist Richard Askwith.
Sinclair's production company, Feet Films, has also signed up Loader to be exec producer on feature film "Feet in the Clouds." She is co-producing with Nicola Shindler from Manchester-based Red Productions in association with Boomerang Plus.

Perhaps they should film Studmarks instead.

Re: Feet in the clouds - The f
I shouldn't worry. Kes didn't lead to a load of Kestrels being kidnapped, did it?
Most people will probably see it and say what da fu...
And who's to say anyone will go see it?

Re: Feet in the clouds - The f
Here's an idea people. I have just read TT's link and as is journalists want they have described the film as a cross between Touching the void and Man on a wire. Now how about we play this game. My two films it would be a cross of are Ultramarathon man and the madness of king george.

Re: Feet in the clouds - The f
I've already been approached to play the romantic lead role...

I love the way whenever there's any threat of media exposure or, shock horror, the chance of new people being attracted to the sport, it's heralded as the death of the sport.
Surely, new interest and participants is a good thing?

Re: Feet in the clouds - The f
Personally....i'd love to see a film about our sport.
Im constantly banging on about it to everyone i know and they all think im off my rocker. Nodobut 99% of the population would think similar things and surely having a film about it - if its done properly - will only make them think we are ever wierder....
I'd be more worried that it just wouldnt truly show what the sport is like, they are going to have to make it good for the viewing audience and there bound to be things missed out/made easier to make the film a success.
So only time will tell....if it gets made i'd love to see it.....if it promotes our sport then we cant complain....more competition!......if it make people think we are nutters with big bushy beards then it would make me ever prouder of our wonderful sport.;)
Amen.

Re: Feet in the clouds - The f
Here here young man.
I do think we do have to watch the numbers involved in this sport, but mainly for the environmental impact.
Was speaking to someone who would be described as 'old guard' after the Tour on Sunday. He was telling me that all the lines round Pendle are now so well worn, it's a world away from even 10 yrs ago where you had to have great local knowledge or good nav skills (or be quick enough to keep up with someone who is either of the above). It's now 'like a motorway' on some of the lines.
I don't think this is just a typical response when faced with change either, but a legitimate problem. The fact that a couple of the lines were rerouted on the Tour on Saturday due to soil erosion backs this up. The Bob Graham routes are the same (so I've been told by someone with good authority:o)
There's also the danger that it may attract more people just for the challenge, without the genuine love of the hills and the sport. This could then lead to gel wrappers on the hills, queue jumping at stiles, etc. because they just don't get the ethos.
Overall though I reckon it's in this nation's interest to know there are weird eccentrics still about who choose to put themselves through what we do...for fun!! It's what made Britain great. I also still maintain that most people will look at it and say 'stuff that for a game of soldiers!'

Whats the problem with anyone new coming into the sport? why does it need to be some kind of exclusive club?
I personally cannot see any issue with producing a film, if it is done right, and the dangers are highlited.

Re: Feet in the clouds - The f
I'm a bit confused by this.
The book is a series of often unrelated accounts. How would this work in a film?
P.S. If you were to be played in a film, who would play you? I'd like to say Brad Pitt, but it's probably more Rowan Atkinson.

More importantly, where will they get the inevitable extras from for the race scenes?

I agree, I'm a johnny-come-lately southern fellrunning f*ckwit, and I love the hills as much as anyone!
I thought about how you'd go about being an extra, but then thought better of it. Can you imagine - "Scene 57: Great Gable climb on the Borrowdale race - take 23". Bugger that.
-
Re: Feet in the clouds - The f
I've heard the final scene will go something like:
"Arrggh Billy Bland, by running the fastest ever Bob Graham Round, you have defeated my plan to take over the world."
Supervillain escapes in rocket ship (setting up the sequel "feet on the moon"). Billy gets the girl - Miss Bighills - and she says "Ooh Billy" as the fog descends.

queue jumping, dropping of gel wrappers, people soooo involved in the challenge they don't see the landscape/take it for granted occur in pretty much every race i've done
perhaps should ban all the established fell runners and get some new blood instead ?
personally i've persuaded quite a few new people to have a go at fell running...can't see any negatives for them or anybody else in that:confused:

Managing erosion and numbers
On the conversation with the old guard and routes like motorways unlike 10 years ago. There are always two ways to look at this. The environmental issues like soil erosion etc were all known about many years ago. I would say now getting closer 30 or 40 than ten years and maybe the issue was that either in the past fellrunning was ignorant of this or were not as environmentally minded as claimed. I don't see a problem with more people coming into the sport so long as we manage the environmental issues carefully. I think we mustn't say that race must follow the same route it has for 40 years because we will destroy the countryside. We should be prepared to move the races around whilst of course staying in the relative locale or if need be give some races a rest and help with repairing the countryside that is dear to us. That way the sport can handle many more people and it will last a very long time with minimal environmental damage and in the end surely that's what most of us want to be able to enjoy in 30 or 40 years time instead of being stick in the muds and bring the death knell of the sport about in that time due to environmental damage.

Partly sarcastic that point (maybe a  would have helped). You're right: there already is a small %ge of current fell-runners responsible for this (and worse...number folding!!), much as we might try and blame this on road-runners playing at getting dirty (another  warranted I think).
Obviously though, increase the overall number of participants, even if the %ge of idiots remains the same, it means there's more of them, which means a bigger impact on delicate environments.
I also try and talk the odd person into it. Yet to have any takers!!

Re: Feet in the clouds - The f
Oh and if you want to be an extra find out the production company and call them and say there is a whole forum of people who could do this. Lets face it if there is to be a film rather have the genuine article as supporting artistes as when watching it will seem more authentic due to correct technique etc.

I couldn't guarantee correct technique!;)

Re: Feet in the clouds - The f
it's a queer one isn't it
if my history serves me right not really that long ago since folk walked out of manchester factories from under the blankets of smog on to kinder for a beating by the old guard's lackey game keepers for their trespass
yet some people who enjoy the wildness don't really want to share it, especially with folk they seem to think as foreigners to themselves ....they covet the exclusiveness and decry change when change brought them the gifts they treasure
isn't it better for more folk to enjoy the benefits....they'll be a few more bad uns but probably alot more good uns...ie a secure future

Re: Feet in the clouds - The f
didn't last of the summer wine once use someone like Halifax Wheelers to all crash their bikes at the bottom of the hill ,
Perhaps we could have a scene where all these 100's of fellrunners disappear over a cliff off Scafell Pike like lemmings. oops forgot, its all ready been done, is it called Borrowdale?
-
Re: Feet in the clouds - The f
I've sent an e mail to Kate Sinclairs agent asking if we can be kept in the loop about developments and also if they are looking for supporting artistes that here might not be a bad place to start.
-
Re: Feet in the clouds - The f
Just think of the merchandising opportunities - I hear there are some small concerns called adidas and nike that dont get much of a look in at the fell scene, after this designer kit coulkd be de rigeur.

Re: Feet in the clouds - The f
£2.2 million budget to make a film about our sport. Be cheaper to stick all the YouTube clips together and make our own!
Bet it would be more "the truth".
Perhaps we should get the author David Peace to write a fictional version of fell running, then get it made into a film "THEM DAMNED FELL RUNNERS."

Re: Feet in the clouds - The f
Sounds like a crock to me.

Re: Feet in the clouds - The f
I think somebody should moderate the title of these contributions:
"Feet in the Clouds - The F"
- what's that all about, then? This isn't football you know!
And anyway - can it include film of Tim Davies running down that last hill at the FRA Relays ... in 3-D
-
Re: Feet in the clouds - The f
Is it really the case that numbers are much greater than in 'the good old days'?
To take one event at random - the Fellsman - there were more entries in the 1970s than there are now. http://www.fellsman.org.uk/doku.php?...lts:statistics

Re: Feet in the clouds - The f
I don't want to sound authoritative on this, as I'm not.
Wasn't there an article about this in the magazine? I think it said that there are more races in the calendar these days.
Or did I dream it?
