Sefton, is it a full-on MTB route, or would the 'crosser be OK?
hmmm, its certainly not hardcore. all the route is on paths of some degree apart from around two sections (a short downhill & a very narrow uphill track) both could be walked without being left behind though.
however I have never riden a cross bike so its difficult for me to say. but I would guess 90% is.
