I'll see you there uc. The forecast has taken a bit of a turn for the worse though. There could be early rain passing through.
The Gun, The Roaches, Gradbach, Three Shires Head, Shutlingloe (only if we're feeling energetic), here we come, not forgetting to loiter at Wildboarclough for the oatcakes.
details
I'd not heard of this before. Looks a good 'un. Have fun guys
I'm walking it with my daughter. Say hello on your ways past! Don't worry about leftover oatcakes: we'll sort them out.
I'll be there with Paul H from Goyt Valley. Looks like it'll be a good one.
If the food is anything like the Kipling Kaper we'll finish fatter than we start! Great stuff - the LDWA really know how to organise an event. (think it's Staffs?) Only event where you can run 29ml and gain weight!!!
Thought this might interest any people doing the 3 Shires too...

will i think its the same people etc just a different venue and modified route..so yes..we'll finish fatter than we started:w00t:
What a pleasant low-key trot in the hills today, courtesy of Staffs LDWA. It's so low key everyone (even the 9am runners) are facing anywhere but the right direction when it's time to go. Such reticence, in a no-pressure sort of way. It would be unseemly to appear too competitive at the start, but you can do what you like once you're off. Thank goodness the rain was fleeting and brief and the sun came out.
It was great to see a few forumites and bloggers there: Will, Splatcher, Emma. Ultracollie (Dave 'n' Charlie) provided excellent running companions.
What about the food though. The spread at Wildboarclough Village Hall was as good as it was on Kipling Kaper (cakes, biscuits, sausage rolls, hot cheese-filled oatcakes) but the food at the finish left me oozing gratitude and delight. From memory it included salad, tomato and basil in olive oil, salad with rice, salad with couscous, salad with apple, a selection of olives, fresh ham (NOT the plastic variety), tuna, potato salad, bean salad, grated cheese, a selection of quiches, bread and butter, pork pie, .......... For dessert there was a large selection of fruit pies with aerosol cream or custard. Unlimited tea and coffee were assumed and provided.
This is one classic event. Shutlingsloe was as good as ever, but the obvious route up it has changed over the years. I took the original (now less obvious) direct route to the summit.
Right on my doorstep and I missed it... bugger!
I do love a good oatcake!:w00t:
However, did an off-road workshop with Macc Harriers and that was fun.
This one looks a gem though, and shall look out next year.
Anyone got a route map?
totally echo nick's sentiments. an excellent event only let down by it having to end.
great to trot round with you nick:thumbup:
Yep - a really great day out. felt quite 'zonked out' at the end. The gps said over 6,000ft too so no wonder. Great route. Think I prefer it to the Kipling Kaper route as not got that slog along Rudyard, and has lots of nice scenery and runnable trod/trails. Amazing food/organisiation - huge thanks to all.:)
Thought that despite the loops involved in the different options it still felt like a great course overall and didn't feel repetative.
Nice to see you Nick, UC, Alison, and all.
Had an excellent day out walking with my daughter - we did Shutlingsloe but not the 7 mile Cheshire loop, so that was 22 miles. Plus 4400 feet of climbing, which is a lot more than she's ever managed on a long day out. And for a change I could eat at the checkpoints. I got 2 oatcakes. And the scones/jam had to be sampled. And the peanuts. And the chocolate biscuits.
In cloud on the Roaches, but then the weather got better & better. We finished under blue skies, & could see forever - far clearer than you ever get in summer. Can't speak for the Cheshire loop bit, but the rest is a big improvement on the Kaper route in my opinion.
Splatcher, very well done to your daughter for doing Shutlingsloe as well. She must be well pleased to complete those 22 challenging miles - all good for her D of E 'CV'.
Anyone doing The Three Shires (EVENT FULL) this year? Sat 31st Mar 2012 - Staffs, Cheshire, Derbys (options up to 29 miles)
I've never done an LDWA event before so hoping there will be some other runners going round at my sort of pace (approx equivalent to 3 - 3.5 hour marathon but accounting for terrain and ascent etc ).
Q for anyone who's done it previously - I'm assuming fell shoes are appropriate?
I ran it the year before last, in just over 5:30 (29 miles, although I think the route was slightly different). I walked it last year with my daughter. Trail shoes will be better than out & out fell shoes, i.e. I'd wear my Roclites rather than my Mudclaws. Can't do it this year as I'm on holiday in the Lakes.
I'm registered to do it, Duncan, though I'm a 4 - 4.5hr marathon man, so don't wait for me. You'll be blown away by the variety and healthy nature of the food at the finish. I might have mentioned it in my blog, with pictures. Mmmm, food.
Splatcher's right, definitely not fell shoes. For me, La Sportiva Crosslite should be perfect, the studs mainly for the descent of Shutlingsloe and the comfort for everywhere else.
You've picked a right good 'un for your first LDWA event. It's always been very low-key with low numbers. This is the first year it's filled up.
Thanks Andy, Nick. I've only got a choice of Inov8 x-talons or heavy road trainers and not too keen on the latter.
Nick - my post above was probably a bit misleading - I'm not intending on racing it - expecting to jog round and walk up the steep bits. More a case of getting endurance/distance in although I was hoping to shed a few pounds which sounds unlikely given the likely food on offer.
Weather looks dry but cooler.
wahey! I got a late shout off the waiting list for this one, so will be there tomorrow!
anybody else?
I bottled out of the 7M "Cheshire Loop", just doing the main loop + Shutlingsloe
nice to get up Gun on an event
and Brucie Bonus diversion through Lud's Church(!) was the highlight
22.5M total in a rather feeble 6:05
good weather, great atmosphere and stunningly well organised event - Many Thanks to Staffordshire LDWA :D
(hope to see you soon somewhere Nick!? upcoming I have deffo Anni Waltz and maybe Mow Cop and Rainow...)
Daz, I've only done the full route once, when I remember going through a very tired patch on that Cheshire loop. The Shutlingsloe out-and-back is always a given, though.
They should include Lud's Church as part of the official route. It's years since I've been through it. I forget which event took us through there. Could it have been Cloud 7 Circuit, last run in the scorching August of 2003?
I might see you at Rainow if I pull my finger out and do it this year.
