Re: Travel Insurance & Running
I'm sure there was a thread on this a couple of years ago because I checked it out with the travel insurer that I used and found that running races (on foot) wasn't a problem - it's only when you get into stuff that involves equipment and money! where extra insurance was needed!
Re: Travel Insurance & Running
I think you need to check specifically with the insurer and assume nothing.
I have an annual family policy with Direct Line and on checking they said the policy wouldn't cover any races at all.
I also asked the brokers who sponsor the Stockport 10, Thompson Brothers, for a quote. They came back with one but said it didn't cover the race itself (just the travel around it). When I asked for one which also covers the race they said they didn't have anything.
On hols this year a girl ended up in intensive care with insurance that didn't cover her (under the circumstances of her injury) and it cost a fortune, tens of thousands I believe.
On the bright side, I discovered my home contents covered something completely unexpected last year and it saved me a 5 figure sum.
Re: Travel Insurance & Running
if you are in the 'European community' then your E1-11 should cover the bulk of your medical expenses, if you are adventure racing that might be a bit tricky, I'll ask Stu from Team accelerate what he does for his team when racing abroad and let you know.
Re: Travel Insurance & Running
I go with Dogtag personally and have done for a few years. Check out the website at www.dogtag.co.uk
Probably not the cheapest, but a comprehensive choice of products (single trip, multi-trip, annual) and covers a fairly exotic range of sports. I have always opted for the annual to save the pain of multiple premiums and/or forgetting!
There is a booklet in PDF fromat to download from the website which has some useful tables to help decide type/level of cover.

dogtag's not much use if you're over 64!
Re: Travel Insurance & Running
reading the small print of UK athletic's Oval insurance it would appear
the policy cover is for athletic events regulated and approved by UK Athletics
so presumably overseas events are not covered
It might be better to join the Austrian Alpine club

So for example if I book to go on a running holiday (e.g. world masters in prague) then can't go because a relative is ill I am not covered. If I go and am mugged (nothing to do with running) I am not covered. If the flight is cancelled and I need to get another flight (running not the cause ) I am not covered.
2. The policy covers listed sporst activities. If I go on a family holiday to Greece (not a running holiday), go jogging (not a race) and get injured then that is not covered.
I was gob smacked that they cover paragliding but not 'jogging'.
Anyone else know (I mean really, really know) what their travel insurance policy covers and whether it covers (i) running on a non-running holiday; and (ii) running holiday risks not caused by running (e.g. flight cancellations on a running holiday)?
The moral is DONT GET TRAVEL INSURANCE FROM DIRECT LINE.
i think you willl find that the post office cover fell running.. as standard,
