I once ran up one way and back the other. Carlside route was 0.5 mile shorter. If I was going AC and pressed for time then I would probably opt to come down that way but on my own round I went up back o Latrigg etc

Yes I'm assuming that is why the suggested route they show goes up Carl Side.

Going up Carlside is steep. It is not only harder on the legs but on the head too. Climbing a steep gradient like that is a comitted effort, if you saunter up you'll end up slow, as such it is quite stressy, not what you want 20 minutes into your BG. I found the Latrigg route easier, quicker and more relaxed.
