Mike Hartley went in the Bowness to Ilkley direction when he ran his 13:34 in March 1989. There is a report of it in The Fell Runner, Jun 1989, p32, under the title "What a Buster" (
https://fellrunner.org.uk/fellrunner/1989_June.pdf).
Mike was a great runner and could undoubtedly have gone much faster if the Dales Way had been his main aim but it was mostly a training run for his Pennine Way attempt and he lost a lot of time with navigation and other issues.
Dennis Beresford was good as well of course and he easily beat Mike's Dales Way time only a couple of months later (14 May 1989), regaining the record with his 12:44. I don't know much more about that run but as far as I know, it is still the fastest time for the Dales Way. Dennis also set a record for a triple round of the Three Peaks (13:16 in 1978).
