I remember many years ago probably back in the 80s Liverpool had no English players in the first choice eleven. It was full of Scots, Irish, Welsh, did they have a yankee goalie at the time?

Zimbabwean I think.
A quick google to see that it was the 1986 Liverpool cup final starting eleven. Only the sub Steve McMahon was English

Oh I am wrong about the US goalie then.
Colin Murray had an interesting point on the end of last weekend's fighting talk podcast where he highlighted that a lot of the 'bigger' clubs - in European competitions especially - are pushing the proper fans to areas behind the goals to create an atmosphere which is in itself marketed to the corporates along the sides of the stadium. It's only anecdotal but he highlighted that, in a few seasons of travelling to stadiums working for TV the only places he hasn't felt this is the case (i.e. full support from 'proper' fans throughout the stadium) has been at Dortmund and, to a slightly lesser extent, the new Juve stadium (and this is from a Liverpool fan - he didn't mention Anfield). The main aim of his point was that he is somewhat uneasy that clubs are marketing their fans - who have to pay to show up - almost as much as the actual team.
He also said, on Saturday morning: "Liverpool will win 4-0, you heard it here first" which is a hell of a call!
I don't really bother with football any more and whilst I have an allegiance to Man City (started following due to family links when we were in League 2, whilst in schools full of utd fans) I'm more interested in following cycling, athletics and a bit of winter sports - in which I hold little allegiance (and am moderately skeptical of what I see)
I generally feel similarly to you ba-ba…
When I got into some 'proper sports' around 10 years ago, I soon lost a lot of the passion i'd held for football for most of my life...
However over 20 years of passion and rivalry previous to that, sometimes comes to the fore... strangely, local rivalries seem to matter less to me now... i'll never be able to bring myself to support Villa to win a throw-in, never mind a match, but I was genuinely pleased when Leicester won the league and gave the big teams a bloody nose, and similar with Wolves this year.
However the soap-opera that is the top end of the premier league, and all that surrounds it, has become increasingly tiresome. I'd genuinely be happy for CCFC to return to the championship with the great clubs in there and all the local derbies, but I can't really muster any passion for us to return to the premier league...
I think it is a pity that there is such a chasm between the Premier League and the Championship and between the top six in the Premier League and the rest.
I am gutted that Leeds have fallen away so badly in the last few weeks when automatic promotion seemed likely. I still hope that they can somehow stumble their way through the play-offs and go up but there is a little part of me that views the prospect with some trepidation. It's no fun getting hammered every week.
As you know it never used to be like that, before the advent of the Premier League most promoted teams had a fighting chance of doing ok. When Leeds were promoted from the second tier in 1990, they finished fourth in the old first division the following season and the year after that won the title!
The flip side of that some might argue is that the quality of football on display is undoubtedly much better than it was thirty years ago.
Not remotely a footie fan but am a great admirer of endeavour and leadership. Liverpool XI and Klopp were great examples of that last night. Fabulous result. Well done them. Now finish the job and grab that cup!
Wonder which one they would prefer the European Cup or Premier League?
I'd very rarely make such a bold statement prior to what is essentially a two-horse race... but Liverpool aren't winning the league unless an absolute miracle occurs... there's no way I can see Manchester City slipping up against Brighton who now have nothing to play for. On the other hand, I could see Wolves getting a point at Anfield.
However i'd now make them massive favourites for the European Cup (can't bring myself to call it the champions league when a potential final is between two English teams, neither of who won the league last year!!). I do think Ajax would give Liverpool a much tougher game than Spurs. Liverpool know they can do Spurs, but Ajax are more of an unknown and seem pretty fearless.
It depends which they've not won most recently. For Liverpool it's the league.
Unbelievable.
Well done Spurs.
I was totally wrong with both results after the first legs.
Less than 20k tickets for each club. Not good.
Watched the match in my local tonight. There was a Tottenham fan there who was staying in the nearby Premier Inn on business. At half time he was contemplating going to bed. At full time, well you can imagine.....
What a fantastic couple of days.
Two London clubs in the Europa Cup final
I bet the police in Baku and Madrid are stocking up with tear gas and priming the water cannons!
6000 thousand tickets each for Arsenal and Chelsea in a 70,000 seater stadium... UEFA's corruption and money-grabbing sees no end. What a farce...
Why are Azerbaijan (that great historical European footballing nation) hosting the UEFA cup any way.
More to the point, why are Qatar hosting the next world cup?
Shambles.
Big match tomorrow evening
Icing on the cake Wednesday.
Half job done.👍
City on track to retain their title.
Anti-climax after one of the best seasons in many years
Had a good season wolves.
Next is important to consolidate and build for regular prem league.
Are they currently the top Midlands team?
I’m well pleased with today’s football. It’s great to see City reclaim the title. I’m no longer a supporter as I’ve not been on City for over 10 years, I’m now more a fan.
My football fix is now satisfied by Chorley, who today clinched promotion to The Nationwide conference via the play-offs...a win, win day.
Off to watch West Brom v the Villa in championship play-off second leg. Trying to be optimistic but having only one striker available is a serious handicap and it's hard to see where goals will come from. Fingers crossed the Albion can sneak a 2-0 win.
Come on you baggies!
Hope the baggies do it.... of all the teams in the West Midlands, WBA is the one I don’t really feel any rivalry with.... (over the years CCFC have had rivalries to varying degrees with Villa, Blues and Wolves)
Although this was tested in the mid-2000’s on quite a fraught trip to the Hawthorns... though the only fault I can put in the Baggies direction was the fact they took the lead after 27 seconds and ended up tanking us 5-0...! The rest of the trouble was certainly caused by Cov fans from what I saw, and the usual terrible policing of football by WMP...
Gave it a good shot but severely lacking any kind of threat up front. Down to 10 men and I thought we had the best keeper but out on penalties. Gutted but given the state of the club at the moment I'm not sure we would be in fit state to return to the Premier league.
Well done Derby. I'm glad they beat Leeds especially with the amount of diving they were doing. Nearly as bad as Liverpool!
Can't see them beating Villa though, but it would be nice to wipe the smirk off the face of Jack Grealish.
My mate texted me at 1-2 to Derby “this is so Leeds”. Couldn’t agree more. Always the bridesmaids never the brides.
Anyway, I’ll settle for another season like that over the season that Huddersfield have just had in the Premiership! Think all 3 promoted teams will struggle.
It will be ok if the manager stops.
Too many mistakes and rash decisions on the night, epitomised by the mix up between Cooper and Casilla that let Derby back into it. In truth results have been slipping gradually since Christmas. Bielsa has done a marvellous job in transforming a team that finished 13th last season and getting so close. But ultimately they weren’t quite good enough.
Roll on next season, there are some very good young players coming through. Hopefully Bielsa will still be at the helm.
I've never been a huge fan of Leeds, but wouldn't have minded them getting to the final, as I thought they may have a better chance of beating V***a..... but Derby are the team with the momentum and perhaps they can do it. Villa certainly didn't look anything special, and they couldn't do it at Wembley last year either.
My Italian team (Atalanta) made it all the way to the Italian Cup Final last night, unfortunately lost 2-0 to Lazio in a very poor game. Although I've got a soft spot for Lazio (the first Italian team I ever saw) and they always take the cup really seriously, I think they've got to the final in something like 4 out of the last 6 years...
Proper old-school club and stadium at Atalanta, in a quite beautiful city (Bergamo)… quite sadly they are renovating their ground as they seem to be making it to Europe a bit more regularly now, and it needs to be up to standards. Really was like going back in time last time I went...

Maybe a new bucket or a different telescope will swing it
I was really pleased with Derby getting to the play off final, mainly due to The Chelsea connection. But I did feel sorry for the Leeds fans. I wonder if they regret 'letting Villa score' in their recent league match?
Should make an interesting final with 'Super Frank' facing JT (Captain, Leader Legend!)
This Lampard vs Terry thing is the kind of thing that cheeses me off... the mass media will be all over it, rather than the actual football... more fuel to pour onto the 'glorified soap opera' fire...
I think I speak for any sane and rational person, when I say that I sincerely hope Portsmouth put about nine past Sunderland tonight...
