England not to score at the world cup.
So how come Arsenal turned Fabregas option down. Too expensive or still not forgiven him for leaving ?
Anyone else get the Suns 'This is our England' supplement shoved through the door yesterday? In a poll commissioned by the Sun to find Britains greatest living person, Ant and Dec came 9th:D

Another reason not to vote Labour.
The biggest reason not to vote for him, Cameron or any other upper-class political twit who refers to the world cup is because they are NOT football supporters. Never were, never will be. Stick to rugger boys. You're just jumping on a bandwagon.
See, I remember the days when I was strongly advised NOT to put "football" on my cv as a hobby, because those in "responsible" positions in companies were very anti-football. Now, it seems they all supported Arsenal/Chelsea/ManU/Man City/Tottenham from when they were a little boy, and putting football on your cv and having an in-depth discussion about this season at your interview will get you the job!
Back to the real thing and, as evidence of all these "new" supporters talking sh1te, all football talk today seems to be dominated by that nasty referee giving Brazil a penalty they didn't deserve. Now, if you're a proper football fan, who understands the game and watched and played it from being a wee boy, your gripe with last night's game is not so much the awarding of the penalty (he did have hands on him) but the diabolical decision to disallow the perfectly good Croatia goal minutes later, for who knows what.
Not sure about that… it was a never a penalty. Yes he did lay a hand on him, but come on, that happens every time the ball is in the box, there was minimal contact.
Refs and FIFA need to sort this out, they sporadically award penalties for holding, yet allow it 99% of the time, Vidic was awful for it, it works so they do it, then randomly they award penalties for it.
But that was so minimal it was incredible. Remember the Korean games, dodgy decisions, FIFA are just a horrid organisation...
No, I agree with you Iain - for any real football fan, that's not a penalty. But in the context of the modern game, you just can't put your hands on people in that way because you leave yourself open to the possibility of a penalty. The Croatia disallowed goal however, there was no contact by the player on the goalkeeper. The only contact was the goalie's momentum carrying him into the player. Under no circumstances, even these days, could that be construed as a foul, unless a law is now introduced to say that a player may not jump within X yards of a keeper.
Of course, in the context of the modern game, the player who scored 2 goals should not have been on the pitch by then - a clear sending-off with modern interpretations. Personally, I preferred the old days, where such an action would have seen the opposition centre-half and hard-man deal with the matter in his own inimitable way :D
That's the modern game though, the keepers just cannot be approached, if there's any contact it's a foul.. I thought it should have stood, but its pretty common now.
In the UK we still allow a lot more contact, its like Sterlings red card, in the premier league he'd have had a booking, Valencia's reaction influenced the ref, but in europe you do go for things like that. It's like Nani's red card against Madrid last season, never a red in the premiership but you go for things like that in Europe..
Its why De Gea took a while to adapt, the keepers still need to go through the man in the premiership to get to a cross, whereas in Spain he could just run into the attacker and get a free kick..

No sign of a Ford Focus on this list
Mexico denied two perfectly good goals by the linesman calling them offside. They might end up losing on goal difference to Croatia in their table.
A bit tasty that van Persie goal
Yep, cracking goal, would probably have been safer to take it on his chest and kick it in, but glad he did what he did !
Why are both teams wearing change colours ? I thought the "home" team would wear first choice strip, and opposition would only change if their first choice strip clashed. Red and orange would obviously clash, but no need for both of them to change.
Very strange.. no doubt a FIFA official placed a 50k bet neither would play in their home kits...
Cracking game. 3-1.. incredible how the croatian goal was a foul, and RVP's acceptable.. he didn't win the ball and impacted on Cassilla's leap… I thought that was a much clearer foul.
So will Casillas be dropped ? If so, is it Reina or De Gea who is number 2 ?
Reina normally… Casillas just doesn't play enough.
Robben was superb tonight he doesn't seem to slow down as he gets older
Yes, what a game. I'm not one for pundit-esque hyperbole, but this was a seismic shift in the balance of world football. :)
I've liked van Persie since he was a stroppy kid when he first went to Arsenal. Great first goal.
Well that was a bit of a turn up for the books. Only thing missing from England's point of view was Suarez coming on and getting injured again. Not watched a boring game yet but there is one coming up that may end up that way. Hope I am wrong
I thought we did OK.. we now need to draw with Uruguay and beat CR and we'll probably go through, which we'd have taken before today. We played OK just let Pirlo dictate and play unpressured. They deserved to win but we played with much more fluidity than in the past, so nice enough performance and all to play for, just hope we lay off the team this week..
Well call me a cynic, but I have see most of it before with England.
I didn't watch the game because my rest is far more important.
Here is simple fact,"Just four of 46 sides to lose their opening group game since 1998 have qualified for the knockout stages"
Two wins is what's now required and that is a tough order as Costa will be more than happy with a draw.
I didn't think we played badly but don't look like we'd trouble a good team. We were a bit naive towards the end trying to run it past 2 or 3 Italian defenders through the centre. That worked well in the first half but only when they isolated players 1-on-1 out wide. Italy deserved to win it as they had more possession and took their chances. That said, it could easily have been 2-2.
Worst performance of the night must go to Phil Neville by a long way
A couple of the later substitutions tried for individual glory rather than keeping up the passing. Sterling was superb but I would have substituted him after he cramped up and brought on Milner. Rooney was leaving Baines exposed in the first half with Baines trying to mark two people at the same time. Rooney could/should have got the equalizer but whatever Rooney did wrong the pass to Sturridge for the goal was excellent and had we got a draw his earlier mistakes would have been forgotten. However one of the most enjoyable games against a good opposition I have watched England play in a long time. I might watch them again now :D
Agree about Phil Neville, somebody should tell him to listen to his brother on Sky commentaries. Less is more Phil!. His comment about Man United continuing their passing and playing to the whistle was a valid one though and if England had done that rather than some individual showboating in the last 10 minutes who knows ?
In case anyone was wondering what had happened to him, Lee Hendrie will be providing 'expert' opinion on England's performance on Sky at 10.00
Agreed. He must have a sponsorship deal with Mute Buttons Inc.
Dodgiest graphic of the night award goes to the figures of the players that wandered into the foreground whenever the pundits were discussing them. At first I thought someone had gatecrashed the studio. It was plain weird. Did they think the viewers would have no idea who Wayne Rooney was without his ghostly presence drifting about?
Has anybody complained about the World Cup yet?
I don't really care about the football. But I'd be saddened if the thread wasn't at least temporarily marred by some grumpy twonk pointlessly complaint about some I.....err... I mean they could just ignore.
Stagger, 4 points should send us through, beat Uruguay and we'll almost certainly go through..
Stick to something you know about Trev. Rugby League maybe. :)
Spain lost their first game in 2010 and went on to win the whole thing!
I have had my doubts about England too, but they did play much better last night and will go through,
if they continue to play the same way.

Okay, this is getting serious. I'm unfurling my flag.
Flag re-furled for another four years.
