Crowhill - sorry to get serious on the none serious football thread but i feel as though I must respond to your post.
Manchester City FC was set up by the Manchester City Council in 1894 when Ardwick FC went bust. They wanted a football club to compete in the FA Cup and the newly formed national English league as the representative of Manchester and all Mancunians.
Manchester City FC as a result became heavily involved with the local community and have been for over 100 years. City won Manchester it's first trophies in the Second Division title and FA Cup and would have won many many more if it wasn't for the FA issuing a banning order on dozens of players, managers and boardroom staff, effectively killing the club.
In fact, many of United's earlier trophies, including their first League title, was won by the Manchester CITY players who joined United from City after the banning order as they wanted to stay close to the city itself, including Manchester City Legend Billy Meredith.
Manchester United don't play in Manchester, they play in an area outside the city known as the Borough of Trafford. They used Manchester as a way of gaining recognition due to City's earlier successes. People also forget that travel was nowhere near as proficient as it is today. North, East and South Manchester supported City, the West of Manchester supported United.
From 1920-1950 Manchester City were known by the press as simply 'Manchester FC'
and were the bigger and more popular of the two clubs.
United went 39 years before winning another trophy, City in that time won the League and FA Cup, plus multiple Wartime trophies.
So whereas United fans say their 39 barren spell was caused by two world wars, City can also claim our chances of successes were hindered due to the wars suspending the FA Cup and League, competitions they were more than capable of winning due to the prolific Peter Docherty, who many claim was better than Colin Bell.
The Busby Babes and Old Trafford rebuild after WWII closed the gap considerably and during the 50's and 60's City and United were level pegging. United fell away during the 70's while City continued to compete for titles and trophies with varied levels of successes. It was during the 90's that City crumbled and United went from strength to strength.
It's pure ignorance and snobbery for football fans to suggest that Manchester City has always been this smaller cousin of Man Utd. Maine Road used to hold 80,000 people and regularly sold out 100 years ago. Manchester City's popularity in the area hasn't waivered despite the current 34 year barren spell, but City have only been a 'poor side' since the mid 1990's.
United supporters were VERY quiet until they won their first title for 26 years in 1993. City's fanbase is 'massive' mostly stemming from the popularity of the great sides of the 50's and 60's and the colourful characters we've had here.
City aren't just a football team, they have funded hundreds of projects and without City's financial input and support the Commonwealth Games of 2002 wouldn't have happened.
It's the club of the common working class Mancunian, always has been, always will. If you class yourself as a TRUE Mancunian the likelihood is you will support City.
how very soviet of you danbert to rewrite history. first you make mischief by claiming you are a "bertie" when in fact you are a red.

Admit it JTB - my post nearly brought a tear to your eyes. ;)
Manchester united formed in the 1878 as newton heath lyr fc, by the humble artisans, working men attached to the works team of the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway football team from the depot at newton heath. In 1892 joined the football league. In 1893 they moved to Bank st, Clayton, dropping the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway.
1882, newton heath joined the football league top tier, division 1 whilst Ardwick were the founding members of the 2nd division.
1894, Ardwick went bust due to financial irregularies (corruption) and man city formed.
Its true city won the first trophy, fa cup 1904 but they didn’t win their first of their only 2 league titles in 1936.
United won the title in 1908 and 1911. The fa cup in 1909, long before city’s next offering. United’s next trophy was the fa cup in 1948 with city taking their first title in 1937 with the fa cup in 1934. Titles during the war years cannot count and don’t.
City’s next and only title came in 1968. United winning it five times before them.
To say united fell away in the 70’s is economical with the truth as city won their last ever trophy in 1976 being the “then” small time cup. Since city’s last trophy united went on to 3 fa cup finals in the 70’s winning 1. They also won the cup in 1983, 1985, 1990, 1994, 1999 and 2004.
The real team who tried to buy success are the “massives” who 3 times in the 80’s smashed the 1 million pound barrier and later spent over 2 million pounds on Keith curle.
City has been a poor side since the late sixes and early seventies. In 1992 man city got what they wanted, peter swales, who the hated and abused. Swales always made money available to a succession of managers that didn’t cut the mustard.
United are the biggest supported club in Manchester with city’s main support coming from the small townships around the Manchester area, mainly Stockport.
I am glad to clear this up for you danbert but you being a red would already know this.
:D
It's all down to interpretation JTB

Danbert, you do make me laugh! Comical Ali would have been proud of that spin!
By the way, Trafford has only existed since 1974:p
And Terry Phelan!
On a slightly less serious note, can anyone name, without looking on wikipedia or wherever, the THREE previous names of Manchester City.
Also, which is the only town in England to have had 2 football league teams in the past but none now (lets assume the premier league is part of the football league for this one)
And - easy this one - the only non English team to win the FA Cup
Ardwick FC is one of City's old names I think.
Is Chester the town?
Ardwick was one of them - they had 2 names before that.
And no, Chester isn't the town !
Hopefully they will return from the ashes over the summer though..........
Cardiff won the cup about 80 years ago I think.
No - you were closer (geographically speaking) with Chester.
Cambridge City haven't been in football league.
Cardiff is the correct answer for the FA Cup
Wrexham?
Watched dom's DVD of The Damned United earlier today. Really enjoyed it although was slightly surprised to see Brian living in what appeared to be Hebden Bridge whilst managing the Rams and also the fact that Mumtaz had a branch in Derby back in 1969
Good question though, what's the answer? Oxford?
And Danbert a real cracker here:
"United supporters were VERY quiet until they won their first title for 26 years in 1993. City's fanbase is 'massive' mostly stemming from the popularity of the great sides of the 50's and 60's and the colourful characters we've had here. "
So City fans who started supporting City due to their success in the 50's and 60's...are not comparable to those United fans who started supporting in the mid 90's....
Of course they are not...:-)
I've never understood the issue about 'glory supporters', all teams have them. Compare Hulls gates of 2008 with a decade ago, compare Burnely's gates of 2009 with 5 years ago..
My only issue is people who change allegiances. Personally I was born a United fan, no choice, but it doesn't really bother me how they make that call.
Liverpool fans crack me up on that one as well. I remember a lad in Uni slagging off Man U's so called glory supporters saying how long he (from Kent) had been a Liverpool fan, since the 80's...the irony was lost on him..
Only town to have had 2 football league teams in the past - but none now: NEW BRIGHTON !! (New Brighton Tower FC & New Brighton FC)
Manchester City previous names West Gorton, Gorton, Ardwick
,iainr
the "bitters" wasn't that successful in the 50's at all. it wasn't till 68 that they won their second league title. they have not won one since.
united have ALWAYS been more successful, winning seven titles before the "bitters" second.
Huddersfield town and even scum Leeds have more titles, that shows how small a club they really are.
since the 50's man united have constantly been the biggest and best supported club. red danbert is making mischief by saying "the bitters" are the best supported club in Manchester, it's simply not true.
also "the bitters" are the genuine club that tried to BUYsuccess in the 70's, we just spent our money a little better.
Facts are:
1950s
United 3 titles
City 0 titles
1960s
United 2 titles
City 1 title
Count the number of times we were runners up and we were the most successful team of the two by far! Not like Danbert to let the facts get in the way of an entertaining post though ;)
... and 9 professional goalkeepers on the books! You can naff off if you think you're getting Joe Hart back!
By 'eck lads anyone would think you were getting your dander up

Lads - I give you the words of the great mancunian Paul Morley
To support Manchester City is to believe that God might have trouble running things on this planet, but he's in control of the next world. He has to be. The Devil rules this world and always will, because his team are Manchester United, and they are world famous and monolithic.
Manchester City, who's name travels the world about as well as Gracie Fields or Pulp, are on the side of the angels; the poor, sapped, unfortunate angels who still believe in quaint antiquated notions of earthly good. To support Manchester City is to accept with heroic willingness the dead-flat that the universe is cold and hostile, and nothing good will become of it. To support City is to tackle head on the crushing pointlessness of existence and to attempt to make something of it. It is hard work. So why do it? Because somehow this seems ultimately more dignified and fulfilling than taking the easy way out and supporting the lulling and obnoxious United.
To support United is too easy. It's convenience supporting. It makes life too easy. There is no challenge. It is a cowardly form of escapism, a sell-out to the forces of evil. United fans have no soul and will spend their eternity neck deep in boiling vomit. City fans retain their soul and will spend their eternity forever reliving the moment their team beat Newcastle 4-3 away from home to win the League Championship in 1968, beating United into second place. Surely we will have such eternal bliss again, for why do we spend so much time suffering in this life watching our team climb to the summit only so that we can watch them dive, dive, dive to their pitiless bottom of the heap while United, of Manchester, but nothing really to do with it, float every more triumphantly skywards?
Heartless United are the incarnation of shamelessness and to support them is heroism in a can. Cavalier City, however awry their football, however dire their straits, glow with something mystical and transcendental. City have soul. United do not.
When they are great again, City will have shown that they are worth their extraordinary fans. To this day these fans will walk a million miles for one of Joe Mercer's smiles. They'll sing a million songs waiting for some new Mercer-like magic. Because they are City, and Christ do they know they're born.
why have scum fans started wearing norwich scarves ?
Half Time
Fulham 0 Hamburg 1
Liverpool 1 Atletico 0 (aquilani scores !)
I am very concerned about that magpie stranded on the Anfield pitch though

Still concerned about the magpie

A point next week at home to Aldershot and Morecambe will be in the play offs. Today was made even better as Lancaster got duffed by a late penalty against Colwyn Bay in the Unibond play offs having finished 21 points above them in the regular season
I was listening to the radio and It appears Juan Sebastian Veron wants to sing with the Rolling Stones and they had a game of what songs he might sing i only heard one but i thought this may be a fun game to play. I will start with
Sympathy for the Neville.
