    The title of this thread was 'toughest training distance.' That's why I mentioned the 800m. There is a problem with doing this on a regular basis though. It's just too demanding. It can quickly run-down the system if overused.

    I can't stand interval training (other than Fartleks)!

    My road race times started improving significantly though when I started a weekly tempo run of about 5 miles, with measured miles to help gauge pace. I run it as close as I can to my target 10k pace throughout. It's painful and boring, but fits into a lunchtime and seems to train my body to run pretty close to this pace up to half marathons. As a measure of effectiveness, its seen my pace increase from well over 7 min mile when I started to 6 min miles now.
