I used to rate Des Walker, he had an outstanding World Cup at Italian 90, there was talk of a big money move abroad but Forest wouldn't let him go and by the time he moved to Sampdoria a couple of years later his career was on a downward spiral

Yes good choice, I have now turned my attention to Spurs players not wanting to play for England

Possible Spurs players and England refusniks 2008 - 2012

I will rule out Woodgate and Jenas 2008 and 2009 last played for England.
We can probably eliminate Dawson (4) and Townsend (5) due to the number of chances they got they are unlikely to have turned down an England place.
You could forgive Ledley King if it was him due to his injury problems.

So the main suspects are with England appearances in brackets (all clubs) :

    Lennon (21)
    Bent (13)
    Defoe (55)
    King (21)
    Crouch (42)
    Walker (10)

Maybe it was colour related and they didn't want the racial abuse from an away trip to Eastern Europe or Spain? or possibly the ones who spent a lot of time on the bench and didn't fancy a Tuesday trip to Bosnia-Herzegovina to sit there?

    Add:

    David Bentley (7)
    Tom Huddlestone (4)
    Scott Parker (18)

My money is on Michael Dawson - he knew he wasn't gonna be one of the first choice centre halves and has young kids.

Scott Parker is also a possibility.

We could work it out from this I reckon:

David Bentley got 7 England caps? Jesus I didn't realise things had been that bad. He joined the long line of Sky's 'expert' pundits yesterday, their definition of expert is different to the one in my dictionary

Do you mean all the time or just on this subject? Either way you could be right

Wasn't it at Italia 90 that England played with Mark Wright as sweeper behind Terry Butcher and Des Walker? A slightly more formidable combination than Gary Cahill and Phil Jagielka
