Tindersticks said to me afterwards, imagine how bad that would be in clag, i was thinking that myself all the way round. Trods off trods leading round lump after lump, a very tricky route to navigate in bad weather, i think this may be a popular destination for hikers resulting in a lot of new paths. I found the route over the top of Hammerscar plantation ok, but on the way back i followed an Ambleside guy who had gone a slightly different route over some fields, which cuts out the short climb on the direct route. I think this wider line round to the right after the tall bushes is a bit better and keeps you running.
There was some very fancy descending of the crags below Silver How by the locals. One Ambleside guy i saw was basically bounding down a line that would have been impossible to pick out without detailed local knowledge; he must have known the line step for step. I slipped on loose rocks and folded one of my finger ends a long way back. I ended up taking the right hand path to Lily Tarn, which seemed good though i don't know where we turned off to meet it, the whole place was a befuddling maze of bogs and lumps. The run off Lily Tarn was very poor; nasty washed out stodge and rocks, i wouldn't leave any last minute efforts for there, apart from anything else it was nowhere near as simple as it looked on the map!
