    mountain marathons

Are there any of these where you enter as an individual? Also which would be a good one as a first one to attempt?

The Rab at the end of September can be entered solo or as a pair. I did it solo last year and loved it... only my second mountain marathon.

Last year was in the Howgills. Very well organised, but pretty low key. I've entered again this year and would definitely recommend it.

    Thanks for that

Must be hard to get all the kit down to a manageable size if you are doing it as a solo?

I got all mine in a 35l pack last year, but it was just a regular (heavy!) walking pack. This year I'm going to buy a 25l OMM sack and I'm pretty sure I'll get everything in there. A good trick is to keep as much as you can outside the pack. So, I'll be fitting my tent and sleeping mat (a roll of radiator insulation foil - dead light and warm!) in the mesh on the sides. On that pack there's also a big mesh pocket on the front that'll hold a bit of kit. I suppose the other key thing is to take as little as possible!

You might like the Phoenix if its on this year - lots of different classes and intended for solo runners - you return to the start overnight so its a good introduction to two day events over a reasonable distance/terrain without having to carry all the kit.

The GL3D is a cracking event. 3 days in the lakes, they transport your bag, nav is normally pretty straight forward, macro nav stuff, but physically hard going. Not on this year, but I think it'll continue from next year.

Of course, there is the Saunders MM in Cumbria. The top class, the KLETTS classic, is a solo class but it is not for novices. Beer and milk at the overnight camp.

Don't forget the Manx Mountain Marathon! 31.5 miles of very nice running. The 25L OMM sack is perfect for 2 days out, needs a little thought and i totally agree with strapping things on the outside.
