    A very steady 22 miles on the canal, roads and parks of Coventry, on a quite lovely autumn day. Have to confess it felt quite hard work from about 10 miles, due to yesterday's exertions at the XC. But the long miles are needed, with two ultras coming up in December.

    Brings the weekly total to a respectable 45 miles, but a lowly 7100ft.

    Next weekend a very short and sharp 3km XC relay, so will attempt to get a solid mileage in, but hopefully fresh for the race.

    I did the Yorkshire 3 peaks ultra on Saturday. A very tough 70k especially when I’ve only been doing 30k a week training. Legs and feet are in bits

    That is a great effort Spen…

    Be interesting to hear how your recovery goes (or doesn't go!). I can usually recover from a 'standard' fell race well within a week, and i even recall once doing a tough Borrowdale on the Saturday, and doing a big track session the following Tuesday.

    But when i did the 10 Peaks in 2017, it was a huge jump up in terms of time on feet, if not actual distance (it took 17.5 hours and i'd previously only raced for 11 hours), combined with lack of sleep from the early start, and it took me about 4 weeks to recover. And as you mention, it wasn't the muscular fatigue, but pain in ankles/feet/etc.

    Due to the weekly mileage and climb I've put in this year, i'm not feeling in desperate need of long runs in order to be ready for December ultras. But it's at the back of my mind that I've got 55 mile (Cheviot Goat) and 38 mile (Tour de Helvellyn) in the space of a fortnight.... and due to a combination of races being shortened, and a couple of dnf's, the longest I've done this year is only actually 31 miles.

    After a tough xc on Saturday, and a long run Sunday, I made the mistake of not going to the gym and stretching out yesterday. So feeling very stiff today, but club night couldn't be missed.

    25 minute Kenyan Hills session. Constant effort up and down, but it was certainly not a hill by our standards, probably about 8% gradient throughout.

    Due to the strains of the weekend I was more concerned about surviving, rather than pulling up any trees with my performance, although I did manage to pick it up in the final 7-8 mins and finish only about 30secs behind the usual group I'd try to keep pace with.

    With a good warmup, and run out to the session, a total of 9.5 miles tonight, of which 4 were reasonably hard effort.
