    maps for races

What do people do to get a map for a race instead of carrying the full OS map?

    I've been using this website
    http://www.griffin-helicopters.co.uk...idRef=SK029732

to print off the sections I need but I was wondering if there is a quicker and easier way

    Cheers

www.grough.co.uk/route - that's my favourite. For the grand cost of £1.25/month.
Hills - good for the soul...

We've got a good colour photocopier at work so I just photocopy the relevant section, draw the route on in red with CPs (and maybe exit bearings) and waterproof it with sticky-back plastic.

Or I get the Pete Bland map if there is one.

I screen-capture areas of OS 1:25000 off t'interweb, "mosaic" them together in Paint, and make a big bmp/jpg file of the area (usually bounded by major roads)
    then I can crop/print whatever sub-area I want on A4 colour printer
mark up with my own patent colour-coding system for checkpoints/route/bearings etc
whack in ziploc baggie for race day
Scramble the rock face through the glare of morning sun — to run

I use grough and then laminate it. I generally use the 1:25000 scale maps, but shrunk during printing to 1:40000. Pretty often double side the maps too. Got Edale skyline onto a double sided A5 sheet, also managed the same for the Roaches and for Windgather.

For a short race where the map is purely for "rules" reasons then I'll not bother with the laminating.

Thought it was only me that did that! I was 15 mins late for the start of my second fell race (had to pick up w/proof trousers on the way). I got there just in time to see the other runners dissapearing over the top of a hill. When i got to the top of the hill, no sign of people. I followed some fell shoe tracks. Anyway, it turned out my checkpoint 1 was actually checkpoint 5. The marshalls were slightly surprised!
