    Race Walking

This has been niggling me for ages, keep forgetting to post about it.

Why on earth would anyone want to do this??

It looks so un-natural and painful...and its slower than running??

Its beyond me...would love to hear other peoples thoughts on it mind!

The only rule is that the leg has to be straight as it passes under you, which is why the hip rocking thing is so obvious. Can't be good for the lower back.

I thought the only rule was that one foot had to be in contact with the ground at all times.

Yeah I believe that is true.

They get disqualified for 'running' lol.

How is this an Olympic sport? I still can't get my head round why you would take this 'sport' up?

Correct, but doing it any other way would be running by definition so i didn't want to state the obvious

Don't get it either. We have a young girl in our club who's heavily into it, and she seems to do well in competitions, so good luck to her. I just hope she doesn't need hip replacements by the age of 20

For the same reason that synchronised diving is a sport, and a miriad of other pointless 'sports'.

To be fair, race walking has been around for at least the last 100 years.

So is the guy on the left of that picture cheating (both feet of the floor)?

It's like the opposite of having your picture taken in fell races. I normally aim to have both feet off the floor, but it happens in only a small proportion of the photos I'm in. Constrast this with Simon Bailey who is normally mid-leap when photographed.

Maybe I should take up funny-hipped camp race walking. (apologies to any competitive walkers on the forum)
