    Junior Club Coach Contact

    Hi,
My son Dylan 8 yrs ran his first event and did well. He has never trained and doesn't have the correct gear. What i would like is if any of you kind people out there have any contact details for junior coach at one of the Fell running clubs as this is the type of running he is now really keen on doing and i want to strike while the iron is hot. We do not have a Fell running outfit with juniors in our area Sheffield so i appreciate the club may not be next door to us but i am sure we could work something out. I would be grateful of any help.
They called me mad and i called them mad and damn them they outvoted me !!!.

Seem to think that Handsworth Roadhogs, despite the name, have a fell section and they cater for juniors too, although I don't know if the two things overlap. But that's just up the road from you.

How did it go at AW?

Penistone and Hallamshire both have junior sections.

    Herakles - I think I met you at AW didn't I?

I would encourage you to go to a thriving athletics club. They do not have to have a specific fell section. Blackburn Harriers don't. We focus mainly on Track and Cross Country. Our fell interest started around 6 years ago, when one of the families were off to Rivington Junior races at Easter in about 2004.
From there we have slowly expanded as new kids come along and want to race on the fells. to the extent that we had our most successful ever day at the AW on Saturday.

At your sons age, what he needs is a social network - a group of buddies, fun and some fellow juniors to train with. It is important that the training is based around speed and agility, so Sportshall athletics or track training would be perfect.

You have Hallamshire and City of Sheffield to pick from. I would go to both - have a couple of "trial sessions" at each and see which has the most thriving group for your son to join.

When he gets to around 13 - 14 years of age, you may then need to consider a more specialist club.

However, Joe Gratton from Hallamshire was last years U18 FRA Champ and has had a successful fell background so far as well as being an extremely good track and cross country runner.

Oh dear. But did you enjoy it up to the point of blacking out?

Good for you though Matt, getting out there and getting stuck in. The AW thread references you quite a bit, complimenting your friendliness and bravery on the day. Seems you made quite a mark! AW is a toughie as a first fell race. Some shorter local ones coming up though, Tiger's Todger, Burbage Skyline, the next Trunce...
