Thread: alcohol

    alcohol

I wanted to copy a limoncello recipe from my Mum. Limoncello is originally from Sicily, mixing lemon an sugar and milk in alcohol and leave to rest for many days.
But it needs 90% alcohol. It is possible in this country to buy alcohol?
I mean alcohol, almost pure at 90%, not alcoholic drink like vodka or such at 40%.

Went to Tesco, Sainsbury, and OddBins, they stared at me as I was mad when I asked (my wife would say, "well, what's strange, you ARE")

    Any hope?

Drop him a line. I'm sure he has recovered from the marathon by now Alberto.
How come he runs for Britain if he comes from Sicily?

I'd buy some cheap Vodka and distill it personally, either that or make do with Absinthe. I think anything available from a lab stores eg. Ethyl Alcohol, Ethanol would not be for human consumption.

Could do. But first, costs more. Second, it just sounds wrong logic: vodka contains alcol as an ingredient, if I want alcol to make a different drink I cannot buy so I get it back from vodka...

I guess I'll remain thirsty until I get another present from the mum.

True. But also, alcol is a natural thing. With enough patience and research I guess I can make my own. My grandad was a farmer, he made tons of grappa and never bought anything for it, got to find out how he made it ...

Not sure if this thread is serious or a wind-up. But perhaps it's worth pointing out that any use of alcohol (i.e. ethanol, or ethyl alcohol) in a beverage would attract the interest of HM Customs and Revenue. That's why you can't just buy it.

    Re: alcohol

When I used to work in a lab, they used to occasionally top up the departmental do punch bowls with almost pure alcohol. However, as a word of warning, there are two types of almost pure alcohol (95% and 99%), and one of them (I can't remember which) contains something extremely nasty. Again I can't remember but it's something that's used in the purification process - maybe xylene or something like that.

I am struck by how fitting your signature is to this thread. I certainly agree when trying to buy alcohol, that "90% is mental".
