Not really that well up on the various backpacks available but I tried the Endurance from the Haglofs Intense range over the weekend and it felt great. Compact size with all the features required. Maybe worth a look?

OMM Last Drop (10l) keeps it simple. Can't really go wrong. Also, has removeable back padding.

I've got the OMM last drop and the Inov8 Race Pro 12. Both are great bits of kit, but the Inov8 just edges it for me by virtue of the zipped pockets on the waist band.

OMM 15 ltr Ultra, can get two 500 mls bottles in the side pockets, which can reach when running, zipped pocket on the waist strap for food and an open one on other side, which is great for Ipod. Have a radlight 4 ltr bum bag, which hold two bottles, find weight is more even with the rugsack, downside, is can twizzle it round to access the storage as with bum bag, agree prob, could have gone down to 10 ltrs but shop did not have one in

My Salamon backpack has seen better days and I'm interested in going for the Inov8 Race Pro 12. Is it possible to fit an ordinary hydration bladder to the pack or will I need to buy the inov8 hydration system as well?

you could in theory put a bladder in there and feed a tube through but if I used a bladder at all, I'd go for the purpose-made one (which I have - but don't actually use!)

I just throw inside a 1 litre platypus with a sports cap - on long training runs I'm not fussed if I have to stop for a minute and walk while I take on some fluid

If I was doing long (like 6-7 hour) days out in summer warmth then I might consider putting the 2-litre Inov8 bladder to use

Another vote for the Raidlight Endurance pack - bought one a few weeks back for £49.99 from Racekit http://www.racekit.co.uk/product/rai...rance-backpack and found it a great pack. It got awarded 'Editor's Choice' in Runner's World too, just after I got mine!

Vaude do a nice range of small back packs with their patented stand-off system that keeps the pack away from your back stopping sweaty build up. I find this a nice extra. It also stops your water bladdr heating up. I use the Aquarius Air 7+3: http://www.vaude.com/epages/Vaude-de...ucts/152450400

OMM do a 6l bum bag with built in bottle holder - you can get it from wild trek on line for £27.
