    Re: Training for an ultra

I'm planning on doing my first ultra in the next year. My training will include lots of conditioning, sprint work, and of course long days on the hills.I am running alot at the moment but I think structure to my training will help me out more than anything. Anyone read the 4 hour body? Some interesting approaches to training in there.

I've done the Long Tour and in decent conditions the navigation wasn't bad at all. Possibly the worst bit was taped. It's mostly on decent paths and tracks

Thanks DT. Looks a possibility then. I'm also looking at http://www.digdeepraces.co.uk/Home/IntroUltra (link this time!). Depends on family holiday schedule really. My daughter lives in Sheffield, so any other suggestions around that area welcome.

    Cheers,

Managed to get around high peak 40 and round rotherham 50 this year based on about 40 miles pw with 13-15 miles on both sat and sundays in an attempt to get used to running on tired legs. I found the key is to be slow (roughly same pace as you would average on a fell race) and take it easy on the downhills to save your quads.

Holme Moss is worse than both of those races IMHO. If you can get through that you will be fine.

While it's not quite an ultra at 25miles, I can heartily recommend the Stanage stumble LDWA event from near Sheffield. Excellent route, all on reasonable ground and a very friendly bunch organising it.
