Well done MM, hat's off to yer ;-)
Hills and Guinness!
Well done, Tony. Great route, isn't it?
I had a less than completely successful attempt in April (http://justusandafewfriends.blogspot...ts-08-may.html) but am planning another attempt before the end of the summer.
Yes it is a great day out, the sort of route I would do again as well although the chances of getting such good weather are unlikely. I might do it over 2/3 days just to vary things. The whole character of the route is quite different from other peak-bagging rounds which is what makes it so interesting.
It might make a good v60 challenge as there aren't any at the moment apart from the JNC v60 category
Good luck on your attempt - I hope the weather is good.
well done tony. It is a good route because, as you say, it has a different character from bump bagging routes. Its one i'd also do again.
Would it not also form a good round for a run & bike duathlon??
To do this route it's looking like you need to be either over 60 or training for the UTMB!! That's doesn't give you a lot of options Rachel - but I bet the UTMB is already on your list anyway! If I don't do it again soon there might be some other old folk you can tag along with to brighten up their day!
This round, which i found on the excellent Gofar website, has caught my interest, as a potential for late summer next year (although I've got plenty else on, so not making concrete plans).
The only part of the route in doubt for me, is Skiddaw-Helvellyn….?
The standard way i guess would be down the tourist path, then either take the road up to Thirlmere, or St Johns In The Vale via Brundleholme, and then up Sticks Pass.
What about descending in the direction of Skiddaw House, across to Threlkeld then over the Clough Head/Dodds ridge to Helvellyn, missing out the peaks if necessary. Obviously this adds to the round in terms of time/effort, if not distance, but is it such a terrible idea? Am i missing a more simple and interesting route?
Anyone with any experience of the round, or just with an opinion, thoughts very much welcomed.
I looked into this a couple of years ago when we were planning some charity fund raising challenges. I had proposed doing the Lakes 3000s clockwise but the leg from Helvellyn to Skiddaw was the most problematic. Trouble with going over the Dodds, Clough Head and Skiddaw house is that it adds quite a few miles on. Unfortunately the most direct route is the A591 to Keswick. In the end we had proposed going over Raise and then dropping down from Sticks pass to Legburthwaite. There are a few footpaths you can link up to avoid some but not all of the main road.

With a bit of "off piste" can you do
Jenkin Hill,
Whit Beck,
cut directly east to cross Glenderaterra Beck to pick
up the footpath north of Derwentfolds
Is it possible to cross the river south of Derwentfolds at Brundholme?
Follow that minor road past Naddle Bridge
Leave the minor road at Shundraw to head directly south to Yew Tree Farm
to follow the footpath west of St John's Beck.
