    Wainwright C2C Record

Does anyone know if Mike Hartley still holds the record for the Coast to Coast?
    Around 39 hours I think...
There's talk that this has been bettered and is now around 36 hrs
The only definitive time I can find for this route is from Mike Cudahy's 'Wild Trails...' of 46hrs 49mins in 1985
    thanks,

    Re: Wainwright C2C Record?

    Hi all,
Please can anybody confirm that Gavin Bland of Borrowdale Fell Runners holds the record for this route in a time of just over 36hrs? And when this was acheived?
    Please! thanks

Never heard of Gavin attempting it. It doesn't seem like his kind of thing....

    Thanks for the input Trundler.
Reading Richard Askwith's 'Feet in the Clouds' last yr I got the impression that these longer established 'walking' routes are not fashionable these days due to the amount of support needed etc... so I'm thinking that the 36hr time is not a 'modern' one as such.
It's the kind of thing that's got to be in some club's journal somewhere or other... surely?
    thanks again though!

    At last - sorted!
Thanks to Slogger/Dave of C2C walker's forum via FRA's Martin Stone:
    July 1991. Mike Hartley. 39hrs 36min 52secs.

    Re: Wainwright C2C Record

I'm doing some research on a possible attempt at doing the Coast 2 Coast in less than 48 hours later this year. Does anyone have any contact details for either of the two Mikes who have done this.

Anybody else with any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated.

    thanks

Bl* h* I was quite chuffed getting out of Cumbria C2C in 72 Hours maybe I should have given the B&B's a miss.

Read Mike Cudahy's "Wild Trails to Far Horizons"
a good thorough knowledge of the route is essential - you could reccy the route following Ronald Turnbull's 5 day schedule (38m a day with bivvy bag) as I did... (er, it took me 7! - the weather was a bit dire but I stuck with it...)
There's a link to details of Ronald's account (in 'Coast to Coasting') at the beginning of my account - 'Wibbly Wobbly Wainwright' here:
    http://www.btinternet.com/~m.l.weller/

...or you could follow a more relaxed reccy in the footsteps of Matt Beardshall's 'Life on the Run: Coast to Coast' with support and B&B's (26m a day)

You never know what the internet might turn up for you... someone sent me Geoff Bell's phone number who very kindly sent me an account of his self-supported 5 day Pennine Way

good luck to you! I'd be happy to get under 5 days!
    cheers,

I found this attempt at the C2C by some Dark Peak lads a really interesting read.

    Hi Danbert,
So... Matto never mentioned his Dark Peak connections!
"To ensure an early start Andy (the support driver) had decided not to go to bed at all..."
    my kinda guy!
    def. worth a read!
