    Losses of fitness aspects

How long does it take to lose fitness if like me you can't really run or train properly?

Obviously your muscle strength will decrease, i know that from my upper body work at the gym, and i'm trying to stem that tide in my legs by using the resistance apparatus along with my physio exercises.

I keep thinking i should be out on the pushbike to help me maintain my aerobic and cardio fitness if my knee will handle it, but can these aspects be lost as easily as muscle power/condition?

I'm really clutching at straws trying to hold on to what i've gained before my knee went wrong.

    Re: Losses of fitness aspects

Im somehow lucky that i can get away with not doing any training and still do ok in races whilst my ITB is plaguing me.
I think its partly due to the work i do at sainsburys. I know your all thinking wtf but come and do a shift with me and you'll see why.
I cycle to and from work - its about 3 miles but i really give it some each way...basically go as fast as my legs and lungs let me - that must be helping?

But the main thing i notice after being away from running for quite a while....your body takes a hammering! I noticed how my my ankles hurt after a few miles of rough terrain and it took a few weeks of long runs in the lakes to get used to the impact again. Just a month of no running and im killing today after doing my club handicap....my muscles are wrecked and my ankles are killing me....i'll be reet though

The Principle of Reversibility: If you don't use it, you lose it

The physiological effects of endurance training diminish over time, causing the body to revert back to its pretraining condition

Detraining occurs within a relatively short time period after you stop exercising. About 10% of strength is lost 8 weeks after training stops, but 30-40% of muscular endurance is lost during the same time period.

try swimming but using a pullbuoy if knee sore or just keep your legs very straight. It isn't oerfect but does help keep some aerobic fitness and will help the mentle side in that you'll feel fitter.
