And in my case that would mean burn out before the finish, TBH I don`t think those that know me consider me to be sane.

I also did the Cycle time trialing bit way back when, but I always rode to the starts, (steady pace) which seemed to be similar to using the first K or so of a footrace to warm up.

AS to those that only do short races I have nothing but admiration for you , all that training and devotion for a 10 minute warm up then a few seconds/minutes racing, then a cool down and back to the changing room in less than an hour, well done to you all for the commitment you show.

    Re: Warming up...

I do short and long races. On a long race I don't warm up, usually I find myself pretty "warm" after about 3-4 miles in. In Ultra distances I'm aiming to complete not to compete.

On a short race I will warm up by jogging for 15 minutes then do some loosening exercises. Not sure if it helps.

My best time for Pen-y-Fan (which is the shortest fell race I've done) was off the back of a really good warm up, I ran the first mile of the course pretty hard, then ran back down at mega speed cause the race was about to start.

There are of course loads of other factors, personally I think hydration and fuelling are more important factors in peak racing performance, its all about getting the balance right.

When i played rugby it was a nip of rum before kick-off and the promise of a warm bath and a pint or an A&E visit or a night out and an A&E visit later.
Warm down was a sunday spent wondering what happened on saturday

A warm bath? Luxury! Agree about Sunday though!
