On the climb of all 3 there are downhill sections so the amount of climb is greater than the base to summit figure. There's conversely also uphill sections on the descents!

The cross country section from PG to Ribblehead must also add a fair quantity of ascent - there's a few digs in there.

Absolutely. The PPP is unique and it's not even a proper fell race with all that fast road and track.

But we are comparing apples and oranges

Personal anecdote counts for nothing. The records show the PPP taking 27% longer for men and 24% longer for women: all class performances. The PPP women's record is held by Pichrtova who was at the time the best mountain runner in the world. And she beat the wonderful Angela in the same race who currently holds the FTOP record.

And if I may be allowed a person anecdote: I have done FTOP in under 3 hours (in my mid 50s) but my best PPP time (10 finishes) is nearer to 4 hours.

Relatively: FTOP is a walk in the park, but with weather. The PPP is a fast road race but with three hills thrown in to wreck your rhythm.

    Apples and oranges.

I was talking to someone at Pendle about Bosnia in 1993, Amex, Jez maybe? Just been searching for something and stumbled across this lot with me in serious mode (and with a 2:30 marathon figure):

Yes and some pretty bad ones, too. The ten days just before that pic had been a bit hairy. I remember coming back in one night and smoking half a packet of cigarettes in quick succession, which is odd because I don't smoke.

Ian, Why jump out of a bush if you're all cammed up inside one?

Well it involved a sharp blade but didn't want to get too graphic....

Actually I've only just clicked it's the wrong way round. All my photos were wet film, so it's a shock to see digital copies of stuff from the distant past of the early 90s. It wasn't all bad as you can see from Samantha Fox and the champagne. I got to buy a drink for Bianca Jagger, too, when she 'dropped' in.
