That's a good idea but this chap wasn't for debate! He was a bit like the farmer in Withnail and I....

Can I suggest that if anyone is running at night on a moor with shooting rights, and you know who the gamekeeper is, let him know your plans, contact details and perhaps car registration. That will save him less worry over poaching activity and allow him to advise you on any sensitive issues. A bit of cooperation from us as individuals will help our hard pressed organisers trying to get access for races, and reduce the risk of conflict.

Mr. Brightside, fell running is included as quiet recreation on foot for the purposes of the CRoW Act.

Any other access issues, get in touch via my contact details in the magazine or the committee page.

Did you tell him that shooting at the things with a double barrelled shotgun is likely to disturb them?

Perhaps he was the same gamekeeper who told me it's illegal to ride a push-bike on a public bridleway

I'm always puzzled by the "not after dark" mentality. I always ask, POLITELY, "Has the army taken over, are we under marshal law, have curfews been imposed?"
The status of a Public Footpath or a Public Bridleway surely does not change with the state of natural light?

It is actually illegal to race on a public bridleway. Hence why riders in the 3 Peaks Cyclo-Cross have to dismount and push their bikes along the 50 yard stretch of bridleway at Bruntscar, between the top of the farm lane and the open fell at the foot of Whernside.

There are lots of variations on this. Down here, someone organising a trail race was recently told that you can ride a horse or a bike on a bridleway but not walk or run!
