I have broad forefoot, fairly narrow heel. I find the Inov8 Mudclaw 330, mudroc 290 fit fine. The x-talons are too narrow. To put in context, I usually need wide fitting in a Clarks leather shoe, and take a 2E fitting in New Balance and the few Asics trainers that do variable widths. I couldnt get on with anything in the Walsh stable including their "Ultra" wide range, and brought the Spirit Peaks back to the shop after they just felt uncomfortable wearing them round the house.
Not too long ago I emailed inov8 about wider fittings. They said they are considering releasing a couple of their performance shoes (maybe the mudclaw and x-talon) in a wider fitting. Worth emailing them yourself - the more interest being shown, the more likely it is this will happen. If I don't need a huge amount of grip I find the roclite 295s are great for my wide feet, otherwise its x-talon clown shoes a size up.
Which styles would you want in a Wider fitting?
I think with Mudclaws and Xtalons it's as much about overall room in the toebox as width. I put a 3mm footbed in my 330s and persisted with them out of tightness and bloodymindedness - and now they fit like a glove. But agree you shouldn't have to go through that to get a pair of shoes to be comfortable.
With Xtalons, trying them on in the shop it was as much the 'height' of the toebox as the width that felt restrictive.
We don't need "wide" fitting shoes, we need anatomical fit shoes.
Anatomical shoes can still feel snug and secure but provide room for feet to work naturally.
Wide fit shoes just feel like clogs.
