does anyone know any cheap basic navigation courses? I want to take part in a few fell races, but they require navigation skills. Is it very difficult to navigate?

We run Nav courses for runners, at the moment they are 1 day for £20 or so, maybe £15 if WFRA members?
The FRA also run weekend courses. Should be advertised in Fellrunner or somewhere. Personally if you have time I'd go for a weekend course. Our next course will be in the spring, don't think the date is set. One day courses are OK but if you have no nav experience its a lot to take in.
We run intro to fell running weekends which contain a lot of Nav work as well.

Try going to a few orienteering events - explain that you're a beginner and I'm sure they'll help you
You can either go to BOF website - click 'Find a club' on left and look for nearest club to you
http://www.britishorienteering.org.uk/
or to search through list of events go to
http://www.oobrien.com/map/?p= - enter first part of your postcode then click 'go'
up will come a list of all events in date order with location flags showing approx location
italso shows distance from your home and under 'location' map showing location of assembly or car park and a link to event details or website
thanks alot, this all very helpful
I'm co running one in January for a local club, although this is full, there are plans for another in february.
I believe the dates for Kettlewell are 18/19/20th March, I'll be helping out there i hope.
I am thinking about joining one of these clubs. It would only be a short term thing mind. I started fell running a few months ago to get my fitness up because I am starting my parachute regiment training on sunday 6th march. I wanted to do as many fell races as possible before then. The only problem is that most of the good fairly long distance ones require navigational experience, which I don't have. It won't be a problem when I'm in the army as they'll teach me everything I need to know anyway. I have entered a race in glossop already, I emailed the organiser and he is going to pair me with a more experienced person who will hopefully teach me a little too. Well thanks for all your replies guys, I think joining an orienteering club is the way to go.
which race is it Trigger. I may see you there.
it's the peak 'o' trial or trail, the 8 miler, I'm also looking to take part in that kinder trial in hayfield on 22nd jan. hopefully I would have at least a basic knowledge of navigation by then.
